Product Description for Carbon Steel 1020 Round Bar

Carbon Steel 1020 Round Bar is a solid cylindrical bar rolled or drawn from low-carbon, non-resulphurised plain carbon steel 1020 (UNS G10200). The chemical composition is governed by ASTM A29/A29M and SAE J403. Hot-wrought special-quality bar is supplied to ASTM A576 and cold-finished bar to ASTM A108.

The grade carries 0.18-0.23% carbon with 0.30-0.60% manganese. This low carbon level gives high ductility, cold-forms without cracking and welds by all the common processes, usually with no preheat in normal bar sections. It will not through-harden by quenching. For a hard wearing surface the part is carburised, carbonitrided or induction case-hardened, which leaves a hard skin over a core that stays tough.

Bars are supplied hot rolled, hot rolled and annealed, normalised, or cold drawn. Cold drawing raises tensile and yield strength through work hardening, improves surface quality and tightens diameter tolerance. Hot-rolled bar remains more economical for large sections and for parts that will be heavily machined or hot formed. Peeled, turned, centreless-ground and polished finishes are offered where closer tolerance or a decarburisation-free surface is needed.

Diameters run from roughly 3 mm in cold-finished sizes up to 350 mm and larger in hot-rolled and forged sizes. Random lengths of 3-6 m are standard and cut-to-length supply is widely available.

Typical uses include shafts, pins, spacers, studs, cold-headed bolts and fasteners, machined components, welded assemblies, structural supports, and carburised gears, camshafts and bushings. Industries served include automotive, agricultural and construction machinery, general engineering, fabrication, material handling and oilfield support equipment. It is one of the cheapest engineering bar grades and is stocked almost everywhere, which is why so many high-volume turned and cold-headed parts start life as this bar.

Common Applications of Carbon Steel 1020 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Technical Specifications

Get the key technical specifications for Carbon Steel 1020 Round Bar

Carbon Steel 1020 Round Bar is ordered against ASTM A29/A29M for general requirements and chemical composition, with SAE J403 giving the same composition limits. Hot-wrought bar for machining and forging is normally specified as special quality to ASTM A576, while cold-finished bar is specified to ASTM A108. Diameter, out-of-round, length and straightness tolerances are set by ASTM A29/A29M for hot-finished product and by ASTM A108 for cold-finished product, and they tighten as diameter reduces and as the finish moves from hot rolled through cold drawn to centreless ground.

The delivery condition is usually as rolled, normalised or cold drawn. Normalising at roughly 890-925 degC refines grain size and evens out properties after hot rolling. Carburising is carried out at about 900-925 degC followed by quenching and low-temperature tempering. Stress relieving of cold-drawn bar at 550-650 degC is recommended before unbalanced machining.

Mechanical testing follows ASTM A370 and chemical analysis follows ASTM A751. Non-destructive examination by ultrasonic testing to ASTM A388 or magnetic particle testing to ASTM E1444 can be added by agreement. The calculated carbon equivalent is approximately 0.28, density is about 7.85 – 7.87 g/cm3, modulus of elasticity is 200 – 210 GPa and the material is ferromagnetic in every delivery condition. Certification is normally EN 10204 Type 3.1, with Type 3.2 third-party inspection available on request.

Carbon does most of the work. At 0.18-0.23% it fixes the hardness reachable on quenching and the strength of the pearlitic structure as rolled. That is too low to through-harden, but the steel forms and welds easily and takes a good carburised case.

Manganese at 0.30-0.60% raises hardenability, increases strength and combines with sulphur as manganese sulphide, which limits hot shortness during rolling. Silicon in the range 0.15-0.35% is present as a deoxidiser in fully killed steel and adds a little solid-solution strength. ASTM A29/A29M allows other silicon ranges where a different deoxidation practice is agreed.

Both phosphorus and sulphur are residuals, capped at 0.040% and 0.050%. The first strengthens ferrite but weakens grain boundaries, and the second cuts transverse ductility and impact toughness. Special-quality bar keeps both near the bottom of those limits. Only the resulphurised free-machining grades raise sulphur on purpose, and those carry their own designations.

No alloying additions are specified by the standard. Residual chromium, nickel, molybdenum and copper from scrap are normally reported on the mill certificate and are usually restricted by agreement when hardenability consistency matters. The calculated carbon equivalent of approximately 0.28 should be used when planning welding procedure and preheat.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of CS 1020 Round Bar

ASTM A29/A29M, ASTM A576, ASTM A108 and SAE J403 control chemical composition and dimensional tolerance for grade 1020. They do not impose mandatory tensile or hardness requirements for plain carbon bar. Every value in the table above is therefore a typical value for the stated hot-rolled and cold-drawn condition and must not be treated as a guaranteed minimum unless it is written into the purchase order and confirmed on the mill certificate.

Cold drawing raises tensile and yield strength by work hardening and reduces elongation and reduction of area. The yield to tensile ratio rises sharply in the cold-drawn condition, which is useful for stiffness-driven parts but leaves residual stress that can cause distortion during machining. Stress-relief annealing at 550-650 degC restores dimensional stability. The grade is not through-hardenable, so surface hardness for wear duty is obtained by carburising to a case hardness of about 58-62 HRC over a core that remains tough.

Values are established on machined test pieces to ASTM A370 and vary with bar diameter, reduction ratio and test orientation. For design purposes the specified minimum of the ordered condition should be used, with the actual results taken from the EN 10204 Type 3.1 certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Carbon Steel 1020 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Carbon Steel 1020 Round Bar is a solid round section produced from plain carbon steel grade 1020 (UNS G10200), containing 0.18-0.23% carbon and 0.30-0.60% manganese. Chemistry is controlled to ASTM A29/A29M and SAE J403. It is supplied hot rolled to ASTM A576 or cold finished to ASTM A108, in diameters from a few millimetres up to 350 mm and in random or cut lengths.
The governing chemical composition standards are ASTM A29/A29M and SAE J403. Hot-wrought special-quality bar is ordered to ASTM A576 and cold-finished bar to ASTM A108, which also set the dimensional tolerances. Chemical analysis follows ASTM A751 and mechanical testing follows ASTM A370. Material is normally released with an EN 10204 Type 3.1 mill test certificate.
Commonly recognised equivalents include JIS G4051 S20C, GB/T 699 20, KS D 3752 SM20C, ISO 683-1 C22. Where a national standard has no grade with a matching carbon and manganese range, no equivalent is claimed. Equivalents are close matches rather than identical specifications, so the ordered standard should always be stated on the purchase order.
It cannot be through-hardened because the carbon content is too low. It is case-hardened instead, by carburising or carbonitriding at about 900-925 degC followed by quenching and low-temperature tempering. This gives a surface hardness of roughly 58-62 HRC over a core that stays tough and ductile.
Welding is straightforward. With a carbon equivalent of about 0.28 the grade can normally be welded by MMA, MIG, TIG or resistance methods without preheat in usual bar sections, using a matching low-hydrogen consumable such as E7018.
Hot-finished round bar is generally available from about 6 mm to 350 mm diameter, with forged sizes larger on request. Cold-finished bar is typically offered from about 3 mm to 100 mm. Standard random lengths are 3 to 6 metres. Cut-to-length supply is available, subject to minimum order quantity, along with peeled, turned, ground and polished surface finishes.
ASTM A29/A29M, ASTM A576 and ASTM A108 do not mandate mechanical properties for this grade, so published figures are typical rather than guaranteed. In the hot-rolled and cold-drawn conditions tensile strength is approximately 380 and 470 MPa respectively, with hardness around 111 and 131 HB. Guaranteed properties must be specified on the order and confirmed on the mill certificate.
Yes. Bars can be saw cut to a nominated length with square or chamfered ends and can be supplied hot rolled, hot rolled and descaled, cold drawn bright, peeled, rough turned, smooth turned, centreless ground or polished. Tighter diameter and straightness tolerances, controlled decarburisation depth, and third-party inspection to EN 10204 Type 3.2 are available by agreement at the time of order.
