Product Description for Nickel 200 Round Bar

Nickel 200 Round Bar is made from commercially pure wrought nickel with a minimum nickel content of 99.0%. It is designated UNS N02200 and is known in Germany as 2.4066 (Ni 99.2). In the USA, rod and bar are supplied to ASTM B160 and ASME SB160.

Pure nickel offers excellent resistance to caustic alkalis such as sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide, including hot and concentrated solutions. It also resists many neutral and slightly alkaline salt solutions, distilled and natural waters, dry gases and many organic compounds. It is widely used in food handling because it does not change the taste or colour of products.

The alloy has high thermal and electrical conductivity for a nickel material, a low gas content and good magnetic and magnetostrictive properties. It is ferromagnetic at room temperature, with a Curie point of about 360°C.

Nickel 200 has good ductility and is easy to hot and cold form, weld, braze and machine with correct tooling. Because its carbon limit is up to 0.15%, it should not be used above about 315°C for long periods. At higher temperatures carbon can precipitate as graphite at grain boundaries and cause embrittlement. For such service Nickel 201 is used instead.

Common applications include caustic soda production and handling, synthetic fibre plants, food processing equipment, chemical shipping drums, electrical and electronic parts, battery components and aerospace parts. Bars are supplied hot finished or cold drawn, in annealed or as-worked condition, with dimensions and tolerances set by ASTM B160. It also stays ductile at cryogenic temperatures.

Common Applications of Nickel 200 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Get the key technical specifications for Nickel 200 Round Bar

Nickel 200 Round Bar is supplied to ASTM B160, which covers nickel rod and bar in the hot-worked and annealed conditions. ASME SB160 is the matching pressure-equipment version. In Europe, chemistry for 2.4066 is given in DIN 17740 and bar forms are covered by DIN 17752.

Bars can be hot rolled or forged and then annealed, or cold drawn and annealed for a bright finish and tighter tolerances. Annealing is usually carried out at about 700–900°C. Diameter, out-of-round, length and straightness tolerances follow the tables in ASTM B160.

The conductivity and thermal values for Nickel 200 are reference figures for heat-transfer and electrical design. The high conductivity makes the material useful in electrical and heat transfer parts. The alloy is ferromagnetic at room temperature.

Long service above about 315°C is not recommended because of graphite precipitation. Nickel 200 bar is tested for nickel content, tensile properties and size before shipment. UT, PMI and third-party inspection can be added.

Nickel 200 is ferromagnetic below its Curie point of about 360°C, which matters for parts used near sensors or in magnetic separators. Cold drawn bar is harder and stronger than hot-finished bar, so state the finish if the part will be formed or swaged. For food and caustic plants, ask for surfaces free of iron pick-up, because embedded iron can stain and rust.

Chemical Composition

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Alloy 200 Round Bar

The table shows the ASTM B160 limits for UNS N02200. Nickel, including cobalt, must be at least 99.0%. All other elements are residuals with maximum limits.

The very high nickel content gives the alloy its outstanding resistance to caustic alkalis, even in hot and concentrated solutions. Nickel also resists many neutral salts, waters and organic media, and it gives the metal its ferromagnetic and conductive behaviour.

Carbon is allowed up to 0.15%. This is the key difference from Nickel 201, which is limited to 0.02%. At temperatures above about 315°C, carbon in Nickel 200 can come out of solution as graphite, which makes the metal brittle. This sets the practical upper service limit.

In Nickel 200, iron, copper, manganese and silicon are only residuals held at low levels. Sulfur is kept very low because even small amounts can cause hot shortness and embrittlement in nickel. Clean melting practice is important for good welding and forming behaviour. The carbon limit of 0.15% is the key difference from Nickel 201. It does no harm at room temperature, but above about 315°C the extra carbon can come out as graphite at grain boundaries. Copper and iron are kept low so that the metal keeps its high conductivity and its resistance to caustic soda.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Alloy 200 Round Bar

The tensile, yield and elongation values are ASTM B160 minimum requirements for annealed rod and bar. Hot-worked bars have their own minimum values in the standard, which are slightly different, so the ordered condition should be stated. Hardness is a reference value for guidance only.

In the annealed condition Nickel 200 has low yield strength and very high ductility. It can be bent, headed, spun and deep drawn easily. Strength rises quickly with cold work, so cold-drawn bars can reach much higher strength if they are not annealed afterwards.

The alloy keeps good toughness at low temperatures and does not show a ductile-to-brittle transition. At high temperature, strength falls and graphite embrittlement limits long-term use above about 315°C. Use the minimum values of the ordered condition for design, and confirm results on the mill certificate. Nickel 200 work hardens quickly. A bar that is cold drawn or heavily machined can show much higher hardness at the surface than in the core, so parts that will be formed after machining may need an intermediate anneal. For electrical and magnetic uses, an annealed bar gives the most stable properties, and buyers should state this condition clearly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Nickel 200 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Nickel 200 and 201 have almost the same corrosion resistance, but 200 allows up to 0.15% carbon. Above about 315°C this carbon can precipitate as graphite at grain boundaries and make the metal brittle. Choose Nickel 200 for service below 315°C, and choose 201 for any part that will run hotter.
Nickel 200 has outstanding resistance to sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide at all concentrations up to the molten state, with very low corrosion rates. Stainless steels can suffer caustic stress corrosion cracking in hot, strong caustic, but nickel does not. This makes Nickel 200 bar a common choice for pump shafts, valve parts and fasteners in caustic evaporators, provided the service temperature stays below about 315°C.
Yes. Nickel 200 is ferromagnetic at room temperature, and it loses its magnetism above its Curie point of about 360°C. This is normal and does not mean the bar is of poor quality. The magnetic behaviour is useful in some electronic and sensor parts, but it can be a problem near magnetic instruments. If you need a non-magnetic nickel alloy, consider Alloy 400 or 600, depending on the service.
Yes. Nickel 200 resists many food products, alkaline cleaning solutions and dilute organic acids, and it has a long history in food, synthetic fibre and caustic plants. For food-contact parts, check local food-contact rules, keep surfaces clean and smooth, and avoid contamination with iron during machining. It should not be used with oxidising acids such as nitric acid, which attack it.
Weld Nickel 200 by TIG or MIG using a matching filler such as ERNi-1, which contains titanium to control porosity. Clean the joint area of oil, paint and marking crayon, because sulfur and lead cause cracking. The bar is gummy to machine, so use sharp, positive-rake tools, heavy feeds and plenty of coolant. It is hardened only by cold work.
Nickel 200 should not be used above about 315°C because of graphitisation. It is attacked by oxidising acids such as nitric acid, by aerated ammonia and by sulfur-bearing gases at high temperature. Its strength is also low, so it is chosen for corrosion resistance or electrical properties rather than load-bearing parts.
