Product Description for Nitronic 60 Round Bar
Nitronic 60 round bar is a nitrogen-and-manganese-strengthened austenitic stainless steel bar product supplied under UNS S21800, also referenced as Alloy 218. “Nitronic 60” is a registered trademark of Cleveland-Cliffs (formerly AK Steel/Armco); the same UNS S21800 chemistry is also sold under alternative producer trade names such as Fermonic 60.
The defining characteristic of this alloy is its high silicon (3.5–4.5%) and manganese (7.0–9.0%) content, combined with controlled nitrogen (0.08–0.18%). This combination gives Nitronic 60 outstanding, well-documented resistance to galling, wear, and fretting properties not typical of conventional austenitic stainless steels while producing a room-temperature yield strength nearly double that of Types 304 and 316.
General corrosion resistance falls between Type 304 and Type 316: better than Type 304 in most media (per producer laboratory corrosion data), though not quite as good as Type 316 overall; however, chloride pitting resistance, stress-corrosion-cracking resistance, and crevice-corrosion resistance are reported as superior to Type 316 under laboratory test conditions.
The alloy is fully austenitic and non-magnetic (permeability ~1.003 annealed), and it provides oxidation resistance far superior to Types 304/316 and approximately equal to Type 309, along with good low-temperature impact toughness down to -196°C, making it suitable for cryogenic unlubricated metal-on-metal wear applications.
Round bar is supplied in the hot-worked and annealed condition (1066°C/1950°F, water quenched) as standard; the alloy is not hardenable by heat treatment, so higher strength levels are obtained only through cold working or by specifying a separately available High-Strength (HS), hot-worked, non-annealed condition. Cold working increases strength substantially but does not meaningfully improve the galling/wear resistance already inherent to the annealed material’s chemistry.
Typical applications exploit the alloy’s galling resistance: valve stems, seats and trim, fastening systems (nuts and bolts), chain-drive systems, pins, bushings, roller bearings, wear rings, and pump components.
Industries served include oil field and petrochemical processing, food and drug processing, aerospace (including NASA spacesuit life-support hardware), and general chemical processing. Buyers should confirm the delivery condition (annealed vs. cold-worked/HS) and applicable product standard (A276 for bar, A479 for bar for pressure equipment) when specifying, since mechanical and corrosion properties differ meaningfully between conditions.
Common Applications of Nitronic 60 Round Bar
➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.
➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.
➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.
➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Technical Specifications

Nitronic 60 round bar is identified by UNS S21800 and is referenced in ASTM A276 (bar and shapes), ASTM A314 (billets and bars for forging), and ASTM A479 (bar for boilers and pressure vessels), with fastener stock covered under ASTM A193 Grade B8S and A194 Grade 8S, and aerospace-quality material under AMS 5848. Standard delivery is hot-worked and solution-annealed at 1066°C (1950°F) followed by water quenching; because the alloy is not hardenable by heat treatment, any increase in strength above the annealed minimums requires either cold working or the separately available High-Strength (HS) hot-worked, non-annealed condition (produced by special rotary-forging practice, generally available 63.5–152 mm diameter).
Cold working and the HS condition do not further improve the galling/wear resistance already present in the annealed state, and HS material’s aqueous corrosion resistance may be somewhat reduced. General dimensional tolerances, straightness, and surface finish follow standard stainless round-bar practice under ASTM A484 unless the buyer specifies tighter requirements.
Carbon Equivalent (CEV) does not apply to this fully austenitic grade. Note that Nitronic 60 is a patented alloy: non-licensed foundries must obtain Cleveland-Cliffs-produced remelt stock to produce castings. Buyers should confirm melt practice, delivery condition, and hardness with the supplying mill, as these affect both mechanical properties and price.

Chemical Composition
View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for N60 Round Bar
Nitronic 60’s composition is distinguished by unusually high silicon (3.5–4.5%) and manganese (7.0–9.0%) content compared to conventional austenitic stainless steels, which typically contain silicon below 1% and manganese below 2%.
This elevated silicon content is the primary driver of the alloy’s galling and wear resistance: producer testing shows Nitronic 60 relies on a thin, adherent oxide film supported by a high strain-hardening capacity to resist metal-to-metal wear, and it substantially outperforms Types 304, 316, and even several martensitic and cobalt-base alloys in crossed-cylinder wear and galling tests.
Manganese, alongside nitrogen (0.08–0.18%), stabilizes the austenitic structure, increases nitrogen solubility during melting, and contributes solid-solution strengthening, producing a room-temperature yield strength nearly double that of Types 304/316.
Chromium (16.0–18.0%) is at the lower end of the typical austenitic range, and the alloy contains no intentional molybdenum addition, which is consistent with its general pitting corrosion resistance sitting between Type 304 and Type 316 rather than exceeding 316 outright in bulk media although chloride pitting resistance, crevice corrosion resistance, and stress-corrosion-cracking resistance have each been documented as superior to Type 316 under specific laboratory test conditions (per producer ferric chloride and boiling MgCl₂ test data).
Low carbon (0.10% max) helps limit sensitization risk during welding or elevated-temperature service. The composition also supports oxidation resistance far superior to Types 304/316 and approximately equal to Type 309, making the alloy suitable for elevated-temperature sliding-contact components in addition to its primary galling-resistance role.

In the annealed condition, minimum yield strength of 345–379 MPa (depending on diameter) is nearly double the annealed minimum yield strength of Types 304/316, allowing components such as pins, bushings, and valve trim to carry higher loads at reduced cross-section while retaining the alloy’s characteristic galling resistance.
The 35% minimum elongation and 55% minimum reduction of area indicate good ductility for an alloy of this strength level, and producer low-temperature test data confirm this ductility and toughness are well retained down to -196°C, with Charpy V-notch impact values remaining well above 150 J even at cryogenic temperatures in the annealed condition supporting use in unlubricated cryogenic wear applications.
Because Nitronic 60 is not hardenable by heat treatment, cold working or the separately specified High-Strength condition are the only routes to strength levels above the annealed minimums; cold working can raise yield strength substantially (producer data show 0.2% YS exceeding 1200 MPa at 60% cold reduction) but reduces elongation and does not meaningfully improve the galling/wear resistance already inherent to the annealed material’s chemistry.
The alloy’s oxidation resistance, approximately equal to Type 309 and far superior to Types 304/316, extends its usefulness into elevated-temperature sliding-contact applications, such as valve trim operating up to roughly 750°C in documented field service.
