Product Description for Incoloy 800 Round Bar

Incoloy 800 is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy, UNS N08800 and Werkstoff 1.4876. Bar is supplied to ASTM B408, the standard covering nickel-iron-chromium alloy rod and bar, with ASME SB-408 applying to pressure equipment.

The composition is 30-35% nickel, 19-23% chromium and 39.5% iron minimum, with controlled aluminium and titanium additions of 0.15-0.60% each. Iron is a deliberate major constituent rather than a residual, which places the alloy between the austenitic stainless steels and the high-nickel alloys in both cost and capability.

Nickel at this level gives good resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, far better than 304 or 316 though short of Alloy 600. Chromium provides oxidation resistance, and the aluminium and titanium additions improve high-temperature stability and scaling behaviour.

Two variants exist and they matter. Alloy 800H (UNS N08810) restricts carbon to 0.05-0.10% and requires a grain size of ASTM 5 or coarser for improved creep strength. Alloy 800HT (UNS N08811) adds a combined aluminium plus titanium requirement of 0.85-1.20%. Plain 800 is not approved for the creep service that 800H and 800HT cover, so the exact UNS number belongs on the order.

Bar is supplied annealed or hot-finished, and the two carry different mechanical requirements. The alloy is solid-solution strengthened with no hardening heat treatment available, so cold work is the only route to more strength.

Many mills dual certify to N08810 where the analysis and grain size permit, which is worth asking about at enquiry.

Diameters go from 6 mm to 250 mm, in random or cut lengths. The alloy is essentially non-magnetic.

Typical work is heat-treatment fixtures, furnace hardware, heat-exchanger components, petrochemical process parts and steam generator tubing supports.

Common Applications of Incoloy 800 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Order to ASTM B408 under UNS N08800, with ASME SB-408 for pressure-retaining components and ASTM B564 covering forgings. Dimensional tolerances come from the permissible variations within B408.

The variant question is the one that causes trouble, and ASTM B408 draws the line explicitly: alloy N08800 is normally employed at service temperatures up to and including 593 C, while N08810 and N08811 are used above 593 C where creep and rupture resistance is required, and are annealed to develop a controlled grain size for that duty. Plain Alloy 800 permits carbon up to 0.10% with no minimum and no grain size requirement, which suits general corrosion and moderate-temperature service but not creep-controlled design. Alloy 800H restricts carbon to 0.05-0.10% and requires ASTM grain size 5 or coarser, both of which raise creep strength. Alloy 800HT adds a combined aluminium plus titanium requirement of 0.85-1.20% on top. ASME approves 800H and 800HT for higher temperature pressure service than plain 800, so a specification calling for 800H will not be satisfied by N08800 material.

Many mills dual certify to N08810 and N08811 where the analysis and grain size permit, which is worth asking about at enquiry stage.

Delivery is annealed or hot-finished, and the two carry different mechanical requirements. The alloy is solid-solution strengthened with no hardening heat treatment available.

Machining behaves like other solid-solution nickel alloys, with rapid work hardening. Welding uses matching or over-alloyed nickel-base filler.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Alloy 800 Round Bar

Iron at 39.5% minimum is what distinguishes this alloy from the Inconel family, where iron is a controlled residual. Here it is a deliberate major constituent, and it is the reason the alloy costs considerably less than a high-nickel material while still delivering much of the useful behaviour.

Nickel at 30.00-35.00% is enough to give good resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, well beyond what 304 or 316 manage with their 8-14%, though short of the near immunity that Alloy 600 achieves at 72%. Nickel also stabilises the austenitic structure across the full temperature range.

Chromium at 19.00-23.00% forms the passive film and supplies oxidation and scaling resistance at high temperature.

Aluminium and titanium, each specified at 0.15-0.60%, are the additions that separate this alloy from a straightforward austenitic stainless steel. They improve high-temperature structural stability and scaling behaviour, and in the 800HT variant a combined minimum of 0.85% is required specifically to raise creep strength.

Carbon is capped at 0.10% with no minimum in plain 800, which is precisely why the grade is not approved for creep service. Manganese, silicon and copper are controlled, and sulphur is held tight at 0.015% to protect hot workability.

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Alloy 800 Round Bar

ASTM B408 requires the following of annealed UNS N08800 bar, all minima. Testing follows ASTM E8 or ASTM A370. Hot-finished material carries different requirements, so the condition should be stated on the order.

At 517 MPa minimum tensile plus 207 MPa minimum proof strength, the alloy sits close to annealed 304 stainless. Nobody buys it for strength. Its value is in corrosion behaviour, oxidation resistance and structural stability at temperature, delivered at a lower cost than a high-nickel alloy because of the substantial iron content.

The alloy is solid-solution strengthened with no precipitation hardening available, so heat treatment cannot raise strength. Cold work is the only route, and annealing removes it.

Ductility is high at 30% minimum elongation, and toughness holds down to cryogenic temperatures because the structure is austenitic with no ductile-to-brittle transition.

For creep-controlled design, these figures are the wrong basis entirely, and plain N08800 is the wrong material. Alloy 800H or 800HT should be specified, with design running on ASME allowable stresses for N08810 or N08811. The carbon range and grain size requirements in those variants exist specifically to make creep design possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Incoloy 800 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Round bar made from nickel-iron-chromium alloy UNS N08800 (Werkstoff 1.4876), containing 30-35% nickel, 19-23% chromium and 39.5% minimum iron with controlled aluminium and titanium additions. Supplied annealed or hot-finished to ASTM B408, it sits between austenitic stainless steel and the high-nickel alloys in both capability and cost.
Carbon, grain size and the aluminium plus titanium total. Plain 800 (N08800) caps carbon at 0.10% with no minimum and no grain size requirement. 800H (N08810) restricts carbon to 0.05-0.10% and requires ASTM grain size 5 or coarser, raising creep strength. 800HT (N08811) adds a combined aluminium plus titanium requirement of 0.85-1.20%. ASME approves 800H and 800HT for higher-temperature pressure service than plain 800.
No. The carbon range and coarse grain size in 800H are what provide the creep strength, and plain N08800 material may meet none of those requirements while still passing every test in its own specification. ASME allowable stresses differ between the UNS numbers. Ask whether the mill can dual certify to N08810, which many can where the analysis and grain size permit.
ASTM B408 covers nickel-iron-chromium alloy rod and bar and is the governing standard, with ASME SB-408 for pressure-retaining components and ASTM B564 for forgings. Dimensional tolerances come from the permissible variations within B408. The European material number is 1.4876 (X10NiCrAlTi32-21) under DIN 17460, and NA 15 under BS 3076.
Annealed, ASTM B408 requires at least 517 MPa tensile strength, 207 MPa 0.2% proof strength and 30% elongation. That is close to annealed 304 stainless, so the alloy is not specified for strength. Hot-finished material carries different requirements, and for creep-controlled design 800H or 800HT with ASME allowable stresses is the correct basis.
Deliberately, to reduce cost. Nickel is by far the most expensive constituent, and at 30-35% this alloy uses less than half what Inconel 600 requires. The 39.5% minimum iron makes up the balance while chromium and the aluminium and titanium additions preserve oxidation resistance and high-temperature stability. It is a cost-engineered position between stainless steel and high-nickel alloys.
No. The alloy is solid-solution strengthened with no precipitation-hardening response, so no heat treatment will raise its strength. Annealing softens it and restores ductility. Additional strength can only come from cold work, which reduces elongation and is removed by any subsequent anneal. Where a high-strength nickel alloy is needed, Inconel 718 or Monel K500 would be considered instead.
Diameters typically run 6 mm to 250 mm, with larger sizes forged on enquiry. Mill lengths are 3 to 6 metres, random or cut to length. Bar is offered hot-rolled and pickled, peeled, turned, centreless ground or polished. State the exact UNS number required, since N08800, N08810 and N08811 are separate materials with different approvals.
