Product Description for Duplex Stainless Steel 2205 Round Bar

Duplex 2205 round bar is a 22% chromium, ferritic-austenitic (duplex) stainless steel bar product supplied under UNS S31803 and its more tightly controlled variant UNS S32205, EN material number 1.4462. The microstructure is a roughly balanced mix of ferrite and austenite (approximately 40–50% ferrite in the solution-annealed condition), which combines the higher strength of ferritic grades with the toughness and weldability associated with austenitic stainless steels. Chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen additions give 2205 a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) of approximately 34–36, placing its localized corrosion resistance above Type 316/316L and close to that of 6% Mo super-austenitic grades in many chloride-bearing media.

2205 round bar is produced as hot-rolled, forged, or cold-drawn bar, then solution annealed at approximately 1020–1100°C and rapidly water quenched to restore phase balance and corrosion resistance. It is governed by ASTM A276 (general bar and shapes) and ASTM A479 (bar for boilers and pressure vessels), with EN 10088-3 covering the equivalent European bar and forging product form. UNS S32205 is a restricted-composition version of S31803 with guaranteed minimum nitrogen and molybdenum, and most bar currently produced is dual-certified to both UNS numbers.

Typical applications include chemical processing and storage equipment, oil and gas piping and downhole components, seawater and brackish-water heat exchangers, pulp and paper digesters, and structural components in marine and offshore environments where chloride stress corrosion cracking and pitting are governing failure modes. Yield strength is roughly twice that of standard austenitic grades, allowing wall-thickness or section-size reductions in pressure-retaining and load-bearing components. Purchasers should specify the governing bar standard (A276 vs. A479), required delivery condition (solution annealed), and whether S31803 or the tighter S32205 composition is required, since this affects guaranteed PREN and mechanical minimums. Service above approximately 300°C is generally avoided due to embrittling phase precipitation, and use below approximately −50°C requires evaluation of the ductile-to-brittle transition.

Common Applications of Duplex Stainless Steel 2205 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

2205 round bar identification depends on both the UNS number and the governing bar standard: ASTM A276 is the general-purpose bar and shapes specification, while ASTM A479 (adopted by ASME as SA-479) is written for bar used in boilers and pressure vessels and carries additional requirements such as mandatory solution-annealing documentation and end hardness testing. Both standards cover the same S31803/S32205 chemistry but should not be treated as interchangeable on a purchase order — the applicable standard should be stated explicitly, particularly for ASME Code work. EN 10088-3 is the corresponding European bar and forging-billet standard and references the same 1.4462 material number.

2205 is a duplex grade, so its properties come from the ferrite-austenite phase balance rather than from a hardening heat treatment; bar is always supplied solution annealed and water quenched, and no subsequent heat treatment is expected to improve strength. Dimensional tolerances differ substantially between hot-rolled/forged black bar (governed by EN 10060 or supplier mill practice) and cold-drawn/bright bar (governed by EN 10278 or ASTM A484), so the required finish class should be specified alongside diameter. Because S32205 guarantees a narrower, higher nitrogen and molybdenum range than the base S31803 chemistry, buyers requiring the higher, more consistent PREN should specify S32205 (or dual-certified S31803/S32205) rather than S31803 alone.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Duplex 2205 Round Bar

Chromium (21–23%) is the primary passivating element and, together with molybdenum (2.5–3.5%), governs resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. Nitrogen (0.08–0.20%), a controlled interstitial addition unique to duplex and high-alloy austenitic grades, is essential to 2205’s performance: it strengthens the austenite phase, stabilizes the ferrite-austenite balance during welding and heat treatment, and contributes disproportionately to pitting resistance (reflected in the PREN formula’s ×16 nitrogen coefficient). The distinction between S31803 and S32205 is driven almost entirely by tighter, higher minimum limits on Mo and N, which raise and narrow the guaranteed PREN band.

Very low carbon (0.03% max) limits chromium carbide precipitation at phase boundaries during welding, preserving corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone and supporting good weldability without mandatory post-weld solution annealing in most section sizes. Nickel (4.5–6.5%), lower than in comparable austenitic grades, is present primarily to control and balance the ferrite/austenite phase ratio rather than to independently drive corrosion resistance. Manganese and silicon are present largely as deoxidizers/processing aids at levels that do not significantly alter corrosion performance. Phosphorus and sulfur are held low to protect toughness and hot workability; sulfur in particular is minimized because it can promote hot shortness in the two-phase structure. Overall, the combination of high Cr/Mo/N gives 2205 corrosion resistance and strength that place it between standard austenitic (304/316) and super duplex/6% Mo grades, at a lower nickel and molybdenum cost than comparable austenitic alternatives such as 904L.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Duplex 2205 Round Bar

2205’s guaranteed 450 MPa minimum yield strength is roughly double that of annealed 304/316 stainless steel, allowing thinner sections or reduced bar diameters in load-bearing shafts, fasteners, and pressure-retaining components while maintaining an adequate safety margin. The 25% minimum elongation indicates good ductility for a high-strength alloy, supporting cold forming and machining operations, though the duplex structure work-hardens more readily than austenitic grades and can require adjusted machining parameters (lower cutting speeds, positive rake tooling) to control tool wear and heat generation.

The 293 HB maximum hardness reflects the solution-annealed delivery condition and is not indicative of wear resistance in the same sense as hardened tool steels — 2205 is not intended for abrasive-wear service. Toughness (Charpy impact) is high at room temperature but is sensitive to thermal history: prolonged exposure between roughly 300–1000°C can precipitate brittle intermetallic phases (sigma, chi) that sharply reduce impact toughness and corrosion resistance, which is why service above approximately 300°C is generally avoided and why post-fabrication solution annealing is specified after hot forming or extended welding. At sub-zero temperatures, the ferrite phase’s ductile-to-brittle transition limits standard 2205 to service down to approximately −50°C unless impact-tested to a lower qualification temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Duplex Stainless Steel 2205 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Duplex 2205 is a ferritic-austenitic stainless steel that combines high mechanical strength with good corrosion resistance. It is commonly identified as UNS S32205/S31803 and is widely used in oil and gas, petrochemical, marine, chemical processing, and other demanding applications. Compared with common austenitic grades such as 304 and 316, 2205 generally offers higher yield strength and better resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking. It is a practical choice when the application requires a combination of strength, corrosion resistance, and durability. The exact grade and specification should be verified against the project requirements.
The cost of Duplex 2205 round bar depends on the diameter, length, quantity, specification, material condition, surface finish, certification, and delivery location. Market conditions for alloying elements such as nickel, chromium, and molybdenum can also influence pricing. Because of these variables, a single fixed price or price-per-kg figure may not apply to every requirement. For an accurate quotation, provide the UNS designation, diameter, length, quantity, applicable ASTM/ASME or EN standard, MTC requirements, and destination. Euro Steel Bars can then source the required material and provide a quotation based on the specific requirement.
When buying Duplex 2205 round bars, look for a supplier that can meet your grade, dimensions, applicable standards, certification, quantity, and delivery requirements. Check whether the supplier can provide material traceability, chemical and mechanical test results, and a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) where required. Stock or ex-stock availability can also be important for projects with tight delivery schedules. Euro Steel Bars supplies duplex and super duplex round bars according to customer requirements and supports international sourcing. When requesting a quotation, provide the complete technical specification so the supplier can offer the correct material rather than a generic alternative.
Duplex 2205 round bars are available in a range of diameters and lengths, depending on the manufacturing specification and material availability. Requirements can range from smaller diameters for machined components to larger bars used for shafts, valve components, fittings, fasteners, and heavy engineering applications. Standard stock sizes vary between suppliers and markets, while specific sizes may be sourced against an order. Buyers should provide the required diameter, length, quantity, tolerance, surface condition, and applicable standard when enquiring. If the required length differs from standard supply dimensions, cut-to-size service may also be considered where available.
The weight of a Duplex 2205 round bar depends primarily on its diameter and length. Because 2205 has a typical density of approximately 7.8 g/cm³, the weight can be calculated from the bar's cross-sectional area and length. As the diameter increases, the weight per foot increases significantly. For procurement and freight planning, buyers should calculate weight using the actual specified diameter and material density rather than relying on a generic value. Euro Steel Bars can help confirm the approximate or calculated weight for a required size when preparing a quotation or shipment.
Duplex 2205 provides high mechanical strength compared with many conventional austenitic stainless steels. The minimum tensile strength depends on the applicable material specification and product form. For commonly specified ASTM/ASME 2205 products, the minimum tensile strength is often around 90 ksi (620 MPa), while the actual value can be higher depending on the material condition and applicable standard. Buyers should always use the tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and other mechanical properties stated on the relevant material certificate and specification. The required standard should therefore be confirmed before using values for engineering design or procurement.
Yes. Duplex 2205 is magnetic because its microstructure contains a significant ferritic phase. This is different from common austenitic stainless steels such as 304 and 316, which are generally considered non-magnetic in their annealed condition. The presence of magnetism does not indicate poor quality or incorrect material. For procurement, magnetic response should not be used by itself to identify or verify a 2205 round bar. Material verification should be based on the specified UNS grade, chemical composition, heat number, Mill Test Certificate, and applicable inspection or testing requirements.
Certification requirements depend on the project specification, application, industry, and applicable material standard. Buyers commonly request a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) showing chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat number, and compliance with the specified standard. Depending on the project, additional documentation may include a Certificate of Conformity, PMI report, dimensional inspection report, heat traceability, or third-party inspection documentation. Oil and gas, petrochemical, pressure equipment, and other specification-controlled projects may have additional requirements. Buyers should clearly state their required ASTM/ASME or EN standard and inspection documentation when requesting a quotation.
The minimum order quantity for Duplex 2205 round bar depends on the required size, quantity, availability, sourcing conditions, and delivery destination. Some standard sizes may be available from stock in smaller quantities, while non-standard sizes or specially sourced material may require a larger order. Cut-to-size requirements can also affect the commercial quotation. There is therefore no universal MOQ that applies to every 2205 round bar requirement. When contacting Euro Steel Bars, provide the diameter, length, quantity, grade, specification, and destination so the available supply and commercial options can be reviewed for your requirement.
Duplex 2205 performs well across a range of industrial operating temperatures, but temperature limits depend on the application, design code, material condition, and exposure time. Long-term exposure to certain elevated temperatures can cause undesirable metallurgical changes, including formation of phases that may reduce toughness and corrosion performance. Therefore, there is no single “best temperature” for every application. Buyers should provide the expected operating and design temperatures when selecting the material. For pressure, process, and safety-critical applications, the allowable temperature range should be confirmed against the applicable material specification and engineering design code.
To request a custom-size Duplex 2205 round bar, provide the supplier with the UNS grade, diameter, required length, quantity, dimensional tolerance, surface condition, applicable standard, and certification requirements. If the bar will be machined or used for a specific component, providing the drawing or additional dimensional information can help clarify the requirement. Also mention the delivery location and required delivery schedule. Euro Steel Bars can review the specification and sourcing requirement and determine the appropriate supply option. Clear technical information helps avoid incorrect quotations and ensures the supplied material matches the intended application.
PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) is a calculated value used to compare the relative resistance of stainless steel grades to pitting corrosion, particularly in chloride-containing environments. The calculation considers alloying elements such as chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen. Duplex 2205 has a higher PREN than common grades such as 304 and 316, which is one reason it is used in more demanding chloride environments. However, PREN is only a comparative indicator and should not be treated as a guarantee of performance in a specific service environment. Buyers should also consider temperature, chloride concentration, fabrication, surface condition, and actual operating conditions.
