Product Description for Inconel 625 Round Bar
Inconel 625 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy with a niobium addition, UNS N06625 and Werkstoff 2.4856. Bar is delivered against ASTM B446 with ASME SB-446 for pressure equipment and ASTM B564 for forgings.
The composition is nickel 58% minimum, 20-23% chromium, 8-10% molybdenum and 3.15-4.15% niobium plus tantalum. Molybdenum and niobium together provide solid-solution strengthening that makes this one of the strongest alloys available without any hardening heat treatment, and the same molybdenum gives outstanding resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, with a pitting resistance equivalent around 50.
It is close to universally corrosion resistant in seawater and handles a wide span of acids, both oxidising and reducing, along with strong resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking from the high nickel content.
ASTM B446 defines two grades. Grade 1 is annealed at 871-1038 C and gives 827 MPa minimum tensile. Grade 2 is solution annealed at 1093 C minimum, giving 690 MPa minimum tensile with better creep resistance for service above about 600 C. The grade must be stated on the order.
One caution applies. Prolonged exposure between roughly 650 C and 900 C can precipitate carbides and intermetallic phases that cut ductility and toughness, so the alloy is not intended for long-term service in that band even though its oxidation limit sits higher.
Bar comes in 6 mm to 250 mm, in mill or cut lengths. The alloy is non-magnetic and cannot be hardened by heat treatment, so more strength has to come from cold working.
Typical work is subsea and offshore hardware, seawater systems, flue-gas desulphurisation, chemical process equipment, aerospace ducting and downhole components.
Common Applications of Inconel 625 Round Bar
➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.
➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.
➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.
➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Buy to ASTM B446 under UNS N06625, with ASME SB-446 for pressure-retaining components and ASTM B564 for forgings. Dimensional tolerances come from the permissible variations within B446.
The two grades are the thing to get right at order stage. Grade 1 is annealed at 871-1038 C and delivers the higher room-temperature strength, 827 MPa minimum tensile strength with 414 MPa minimum proof strength. Grade 2 is solution annealed at 1093 C minimum, which coarsens the grain and drops strength to 690 MPa and 276 MPa, but gives materially better creep and stress-rupture performance. Grade 1 suits ambient and moderate-temperature corrosion service. Grade 2 is for sustained service above roughly 600 C. Composition is identical, so only the mechanical results distinguish them.
One metallurgical caution applies. Prolonged exposure between roughly 650 C and 900 C can precipitate carbides and intermetallic phases that reduce ductility and toughness, so the alloy is not intended for long-term service in that band even though its oxidation limit is higher.
Machining is demanding. The alloy is strong, tough and work hardens rapidly, so rigid setups, sharp tooling, heavy positive feeds and slow speeds are essential.
Welding uses matching ERNiCrMo-3 filler and is straightforward by nickel alloy standards, with no post-weld heat treatment normally required.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Alloy 625 Round Bar
Molybdenum at 8.00-10.00% does double duty and is the reason this alloy is so widely specified. It strengthens the nickel matrix in solid solution, contributing much of the alloy’s unusually high strength for a non-hardenable material, and it also strengthens the passive film against localised breakdown, giving resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion that puts the pitting resistance equivalent near 50.
Niobium plus tantalum at 3.15-4.15% adds further solid-solution strengthening and stabilises carbon, which is what allows the alloy to be welded without post-weld heat treatment while retaining resistance to intergranular attack.
Chromium at 20.00-23.00% generates the passive skin and provides oxidation resistance and performance in oxidising acids such as nitric.
Nickel at 58% minimum gives resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and strong performance in reducing acids and caustic conditions. The combination of high chromium and high nickel is what makes the alloy effective in both oxidising and reducing environments, which few materials manage.
Iron is capped at 5.00% and cobalt at 1.00%, both as controlled residuals. Carbon at 0.10%, phosphorus and sulphur at 0.015% each, and aluminium and titanium at 0.40% each are held low to protect weldability and corrosion behaviour.

Mechanical Properties
Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Alloy 625 Round Bar
ASTM B446 sets these, shown against grade because the two differ substantially. All are minima and testing follows ASTM E8 or ASTM A370.
Grade 1, annealed at 871 C minimum, reaches 827 MPa minimum tensile strength with 414 MPa minimum proof strength in bar up to 101.6 mm diameter. From 101.6 mm through to 254 mm the requirement falls to 758 MPa and 345 MPa. That banding tracks section size as it does in quenched and tempered bolting, so design must use the figures for the actual diameter rather than the headline number.
Grade 2, solution annealed at 1093 C minimum, drops to 690 MPa and 276 MPa because the higher treatment coarsens the grain. What it gains is creep and stress-rupture performance, which is why it is the correct choice for sustained service above roughly 600 C. Choosing Grade 1 for hot service because it looks stronger on paper is a common and costly mistake.
Both grades require 30% minimum elongation, so ductility is fully retained in either condition.
The alloy cannot be hardened by heat treatment, and cold work is the only route to higher strength.
Toughness is excellent and holds down to cryogenic temperatures, with no ductile-to-brittle transition.
