Product Description for Stainless Steel 17-4 PH Round Bar

Grade 17-4 PH is designated UNS S17400 and W.Nr. 1.4542. As round bar it is normally ordered to ASTM A564 / A564M (Type 630), with ASTM A484 / A484M covering dimensional and surface requirements. EN, JIS, GB/T and KS all carry an equivalent designation.

The grade is a precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless steel containing 15-17.5% chromium, 3-5% nickel, 3-5% copper and niobium. Strengthening comes from fine copper-rich precipitates formed during a single low-temperature ageing treatment, which produces tensile strength up to approximately 1310 MPa with minimal distortion and corrosion resistance approaching that of grade 304.

Stock diameters run from 3 mm to 500 mm, with bigger sections forged against order, and lengths are either random 3 to 6 m or cut to a stated size. Bar is supplied in the solution annealed (Condition A) or precipitation hardened (H900 to H1150) condition, and can be hot finished, cold drawn, peeled, turned, ground or polished. Strength is developed by a low-temperature precipitation-hardening (ageing) treatment carried out after machining.

Typical parts are valve stems, pump shafts, fasteners, fittings and highly stressed machined parts, ordered by the aerospace, oil and gas, power generation, chemical processing and general engineering industries. Documentation is usually an EN 10204 3.1 certificate listing the heat analysis, the mechanical test results and the condition supplied. Third party inspection, positive material identification and non-destructive examination can be added at order stage. The melting range is roughly 1404 – 1440 C. The bar is ferromagnetic in every condition. Density is around 7.80 g/cm3 and the modulus of elasticity about 197 GPa.

Common Applications of Stainless Steel 17-4 PH Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Buyers specify ASTM A564 / A564M (Type 630) for the material and ASTM A484 / A484M for dimensions and surface. In Europe the same steel is called 1.4542 (X5CrNiCuNb16-4). The ordered standard and condition should appear on the order and on the certificate.

Bar is supplied in Condition A, solution treated at approximately 1040 C and air cooled. Ageing is a single-step treatment, for example 480 C for one hour for H900 or 620 C for four hours for H1150, chosen to set the required strength and toughness combination.

Hot finished bar is rolled or forged, then heat treated and pickled. Cold finished bar is drawn, peeled, turned or ground after that. Diameter, out of round, straightness and length tolerances shift with size and finish class, so they are read from the dimensional standard or agreed case by case.

Because ageing is carried out at relatively low temperature, dimensional change during hardening is small, so parts can be machined close to final size in Condition A and aged afterwards with minimal distortion.

The physical properties quoted are typical mill values, not requirements of the standard. Testing is to ASTM A370, with results, analysis, condition and heat number on the certificate.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for SS 17-4 PH Round Bar

Copper at 3-5% is the hardening element. During ageing it forms nanoscale copper-rich precipitates that impede dislocation motion. Niobium stabilises carbon as niobium carbide, protecting chromium and preserving corrosion resistance, while nickel controls the martensitic transformation.

Chromium runs 15.00 to 17.50% here, and it is what makes the steel stainless: it builds the passive oxide film that resists attack. Nickel at 3.00 to 5.00% stabilises the structure and improves ductility and toughness. The standard also fixes copper 3.00 to 5.00%, niobium + tantalum 0.15 to 0.45%. Carbon is capped at 0.07%.

The manganese and silicon come from deoxidation and add slight strength. Phosphorus and sulphur are residual elements with low ceilings, because they cost hot workability, weldability and corrosion resistance.

ASTM, EN, JIS, GB/T and KS versions of the grade set slightly different limits. For general work the gap rarely matters; for severe corrosion or hot service it can, so check the heat analysis on the certificate against the standard ordered. Chemical analysis is carried out to ASTM A751. Where the composition table shows no limit for an element, the standard sets no requirement and the element need not be determined or reported.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of SS 17-4 PH Round Bar

Properties depend on the ageing condition. H900 gives 1310 MPa minimum tensile and 1170 MPa yield at 40 HRC; H1150 gives 930 MPa minimum tensile and 725 MPa yield with substantially higher toughness and improved stress corrosion resistance.

The ageing condition governs the result. Age low and strength and hardness go up; age higher and strength drops while toughness, ductility and stress corrosion resistance improve. Tensile testing is to ASTM A370 and hardness to ASTM E18, certified for the condition ordered, so the condition has to be specified.

For design, use the specified minima of the standard and condition ordered and take the real numbers from the mill certificate. Section size matters too, since diameter affects cooling rate during heat treatment and how much hot or cold work the bar has seen.

This combination of very high strength with useful corrosion resistance and low distortion during hardening is why the grade is selected for highly loaded aerospace, subsea and rotating machinery components. Fatigue performance is good, but notch sensitivity rises with strength level, so higher ageing temperatures are often specified where impact or stress corrosion resistance matters more than peak strength.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Stainless Steel 17-4 PH Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
It is round bar in precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless steel grade 17-4 PH, which carries the UNS number S17400 and the material number 1.4542. Bar is made to ASTM A564 / A564M (Type 630) and supplied in the solution annealed (Condition A) or precipitation hardened (H900 to H1150) condition. The grade goes into valve stems, pump shafts, fasteners, fittings and highly stressed machined parts for the aerospace, oil and gas, power generation, chemical processing and general engineering industries, and can be had hot finished, cold drawn, peeled, turned, ground or polished depending on the tolerance and surface a part needs.
The material standard is ASTM A564 / A564M (Type 630), which fixes chemistry, mechanical properties and heat treatment condition. Dimensions, straightness and surface come from ASTM A484 / A484M. In Europe the same steel is specified to EN as 1.4542 (X5CrNiCuNb16-4). Testing follows ASTM A370 and certification is normally EN 10204 3.1. Name the standard and the condition on the order.
Recognised equivalents are EN 10088-3: 1.4542 (X5CrNiCuNb16-4); JIS G4303: SUS630; GB/T 1220: 05Cr17Ni4Cu4Nb (S51740); KS D 3706: STS630; ISO 15510: X5CrNiCuNb16-4. Where a national standard has no entry for the grade, do not assume a substitute; composition limits vary between standards. On code work, have the design authority confirm any equivalence against the actual heat analysis.
Diameters between 3 mm and 500 mm are normal, and larger sections are forged to order. Cold finished bar is usually 3 mm to 100 mm; hot finished and forged bar 16 mm to 500 mm. Lengths are random 3 to 6 m as standard, with cut lengths available. Tolerances on diameter, straightness and length follow ASTM A484 / A484M or whatever is agreed.
The specified values are Hardness (Condition A, solution annealed) 363 (max) / 38 HRC (max) HBW; Tensile Strength (H900) 1310 (min) MPa; Yield Strength 0.2% (H900) 1170 (min) MPa; Elongation in 50 mm (H900, longitudinal) 10 (min) %. They relate to the solution annealed (Condition A) or precipitation hardened (H900 to H1150) condition and are proved by testing to ASTM A370. Because diameter, finish and heat treatment all move the numbers, design against the minima of the ordered standard and read the certificate for what the heat achieved.
The main alloying elements are C 0.07% max, Cr 15.00-17.50%, Ni 3.00-5.00%, Cu 3.00-5.00%, Nb + Ta 0.15-0.45%, with manganese, silicon, phosphorus and sulphur held to the limits of the governing standard. Copper at 3-5% is the hardening element. Limits move slightly between the ASTM, EN, JIS and GB/T versions, so check the certified heat analysis against whichever was ordered.
Yes. Bar can go out in random mill lengths, in fixed or cut lengths to an agreed tolerance, or machined to drawing. Finishes cover hot finished and pickled, cold drawn, peeled, rough and smooth turned, centreless ground and polished. Bright and ground bar holds tighter diameter tolerance and gives a better surface for precision machining, while hot finished bar costs less for general fabrication. End condition, chamfering, marking and packing can also be specified.
They identify the ageing treatment applied after solution annealing, with the number giving the ageing temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. H900 means ageing at 900 F, approximately 480 C, which produces the highest strength at 1310 MPa minimum tensile and 40 HRC. H1150 means ageing at 1150 F, approximately 620 C, giving 930 MPa minimum tensile with much better toughness and improved resistance to stress corrosion cracking. H1025 and H1075 provide intermediate combinations.
