Product Description for Super Duplex Stainless Steel 2507 Round Bar

2507 Super Duplex Round Bar is a super duplex (austenitic-ferritic) stainless steel bar produced to UNS S32750, EN 1.4410 (X2CrNiMoN25-7-4), and equivalent national standards. It is supplied hot rolled or forged, solution annealed at approximately 1050–1125°C, and rapidly water quenched to produce a balanced two-phase microstructure of roughly 35–55% ferrite and the remainder austenite. This structure is what gives duplex grades their combination of high strength and corrosion resistance relative to standard austenitic stainless steels.

The alloy’s high chromium (24–26%), molybdenum (3–5%) and nitrogen (0.24–0.32%) content produces a Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PREN = %Cr + 3.3×%Mo + 16×%N) of 40 or higher, placing it in the “super duplex” category. This gives excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and chloride stress corrosion cracking, along with mechanical strength roughly double that of standard 300-series austenitic bar in the annealed condition.

2507 round bar is manufactured to ASTM A276 (bars and shapes) and ASTM A479 (bars for boilers and pressure vessels), with EN 10088-3 covering the equivalent European bar specification. It is commonly supplied in solution-annealed, peel-turned or machined condition, and is listed under NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for sour (H₂S-containing) service.

Typical applications include subsea and topside oil and gas equipment, seawater-handling pumps and valves, desalination plant components, chemical processing equipment, and other applications where 316L or standard duplex 2205 do not provide sufficient corrosion resistance or strength. Purchasers should confirm the required product standard (A276 vs A479 vs EN 10088-3), diameter-dependent mechanical property requirements, heat treatment condition, and any supplementary requirements such as NACE compliance, impact testing temperature, or third-party material certification (EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2) before ordering.

Common Applications of Super Duplex Stainless Steel 2507 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

2507 round bar is normally ordered against ASTM A276 (general bar/shapes) or ASTM A479 (bar intended for pressure-retaining/boiler applications); the two standards carry the same nominal chemistry but differ in supplementary testing and certification requirements, so the purchase order should state which standard governs. Delivery condition is solution annealed and water quenched this is essential, since it dissolves intermetallic phases and sets the 35–55% ferrite balance that gives the grade its corrosion resistance; the bar should never be supplied or used in the as-hot-worked (non-annealed) condition.

Mechanical properties, particularly yield strength, can vary with bar diameter under ASTM A276 Table 2, so the applicable size bracket must be checked against the certificate. Surface condition ranges from black hot-rolled to peeled or machined bright bar; peeled bar is typical for large-diameter stock intended for further machining. Impact toughness (Charpy V-notch) is not mandated by base ASTM A276 but is commonly specified as a supplementary requirement for offshore or sour-service orders, often tested at −46°C or lower.

Buyers specifying NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 compliance for sour service should confirm hardness is controlled within the sour-service limit in addition to the base standard’s hardness ceiling.

Chemical Composition

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Alloy 2507 Round Bar

Chromium and molybdenum are the primary passive-film formers responsible for 2507’s resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion, while nitrogen is deliberately alloyed at 0.24–0.32% both to boost pitting resistance disproportionately to its concentration and to strengthen and stabilize the austenite phase, offsetting the tendency of high-chromium/high-molybdenum duplex steels to form excess ferrite.

The combined effect is captured by the PREN formula, and the 40-minimum requirement is what distinguishes “super duplex” grades like 2507 from standard duplex grades such as 2205 (PREN ~35). Nickel content (6–8%) is lower than in comparable austenitic grades because its role here is primarily to balance the ferrite/austenite ratio near 50/50 rather than to carry corrosion resistance. Carbon is held very low (0.030% max) to minimize the risk of chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding or improper heat treatment, which would otherwise cause sensitization and localized corrosion.

Manganese and silicon are largely residual/deoxidation elements, controlled to avoid promoting unwanted intermetallic (sigma) phase formation. Because duplex grades are more susceptible than austenitic grades to embrittling intermetallic phases if held too long in the 600–1000°C range, both alloy design and subsequent thermal processing (welding, hot forming) require closer control than for conventional austenitic stainless steels.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Alloy 2507 Round Bar

2507’s 550 MPa minimum yield strength is roughly double that of annealed 316L (min. 170 MPa), which allows designers to reduce section size and weight for a given load-bearing requirement a common justification for specifying this grade over standard austenitic stainless in structural and pressure-containing components.

The relatively high elongation (typically ≥25% in practice, versus a 15% ASTM floor) and good Charpy impact values, including at sub-zero temperatures, reflect the austenite phase’s ductility and toughness, which balances the strength contributed by the ferrite phase; this combination is what allows duplex bar to be used in cold marine and subsea environments without the brittle-fracture concerns associated with plain ferritic stainless steels.

The controlled maximum hardness (310 HBW under ASTM A276, often tightened to 28 HRC / ~270 HB or lower for NACE MR0175 sour-service compliance) is a corrosion-related limit, not primarily a wear consideration: excessive hardness in duplex stainless correlates with increased susceptibility to sulfide stress cracking in H₂S-containing service.

For machining, the same high strength and work-hardening behavior that gives 2507 its mechanical advantage also increases cutting forces and tool wear relative to 316L, so slower speeds, rigid setups, and sharp, positive-rake tooling are typically recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Super Duplex Stainless Steel 2507 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
2507 is a super duplex (austenitic-ferritic) stainless steel, UNS S32750 / EN 1.4410, with roughly 25% chromium, 7% nickel, and 4% molybdenum, offering high strength and corrosion resistance exceeding standard duplex and austenitic grades.
Round bar is typically supplied to ASTM A276 or ASTM A479 (for pressure-vessel applications) in the USA, and to EN 10088-3 in Europe, depending on the buyer's specification.
The direct, verified equivalent is EN/DIN 1.4410, and GB 022Cr25Ni7Mo4N is a genuine compositional match documented under GB/T 21833. JIS/KS SUS/STS 329J4L is commonly cited as an equivalent by distributors, but the official JIS G4303 composition for that grade permits a lower molybdenum ceiling and a much wider nitrogen range than ASTM S32750, a SUS329J4L heat can legitimately fall short of true super-duplex performance, so don't treat it as interchangeable without checking heat chemistry.
Solution annealed at approximately 1050–1125°C and water quenched, this is required to dissolve intermetallic phases and establish the 35–55% ferrite microstructure.
Yes. It has good weldability using GTAW, SMAW, or SAW processes with matching duplex filler metal (e.g., ER2594/E2594), provided heat input and interpass temperature are controlled to avoid excess ferrite or intermetallic phase formation.
It offers a minimum PREN of 40, giving excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride stress corrosion cracking in seawater and other chloride-bearing media.
Oil and gas production equipment, seawater and desalination systems, and chemical processing plant components requiring both high strength and superior corrosion resistance.
Yes, subject to mill or distributor capability; diameter range, length, and tolerance should be confirmed against current stock and manufacturing capability at the time of order.
