Product Description for Monel 400 Round Bar

Monel 400 is a nickel-copper alloy, UNS N04400 and Werkstoff 2.4360. Material is furnished to ASTM B164, the standard covering nickel-copper alloy rod, bar and wire, with ASME SB-164 for pressure equipment.

The composition is simple: nickel 63% minimum with 28-34% copper and little else. That binary nickel-copper system is close to a solid solution across the whole composition range, which gives the alloy unusually uniform properties and no phase changes to worry about.

Its defining application is hydrofluoric acid. Monel 400 is one of very few materials that performs reliably in HF across a wide concentration and temperature range, and much of the world’s HF alkylation plant is built from it. It also resists seawater, brine, alkalis and reducing acids, and handles flowing seawater far better than copper alloys.

The limitation is oxidising conditions. Nitric acid, ferric chloride, cupric chloride and oxidising salts attack it rapidly, so it is not a general-purpose corrosion alloy.

One property catches people out: Monel 400 has a Curie temperature near room temperature, so it can be weakly magnetic at ambient depending on composition and temperature. It is not a reliably non-magnetic material.

Bar is supplied annealed, hot-finished, or cold drawn and stress relieved, and the three conditions carry different mechanical requirements, so the condition belongs on the order.

The modulus of elasticity at 179 GPa is noticeably below the roughly 200 GPa of steels, which matters for deflection-limited design and for bolted joints where stiffness affects load distribution.

Sizes span 6 mm to 250 mm, either random or cut to length.

Typical work is HF alkylation hardware, marine shafting, pump and valve components, heat exchangers and fasteners.

Common Applications of Monel 400 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Buy to ASTM B164 under UNS N04400, with ASME SB-164 for pressure-retaining components and ASTM B564 for forgings. Dimensional tolerances come from the permissible variations within B164.

Three delivery conditions are available and they carry different mechanical requirements. Annealed material is softest, hot-finished sits higher, and cold drawn and stress relieved gives the highest strength. The condition must be stated on the order, because the same UNS number covers all three.

The magnetic question comes up constantly and deserves a straight answer. Monel 400 has a Curie temperature close to room temperature, typically somewhere between about 20 C and 50 C depending on the exact composition. Below it the alloy is ferromagnetic and above it is not, which means a bar may respond weakly to a magnet on a cold day and not on a warm one. It should never be specified where genuinely non-magnetic behaviour is required. Monel K500 has a Curie temperature far below ambient and is reliably non-magnetic.

Where the alloy must not be used is in oxidising media. Nitric acid, ferric and cupric chlorides and oxidising salts attack it quickly.

Machining is easier than most nickel alloys in the annealed condition, though the material still work hardens.

Chemical Composition

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Monel 400 Round Bar

Nickel at 63% minimum and copper at 28.00-34.00% make up almost the entire alloy, and the simplicity is the point. Nickel and copper form a continuous solid solution across the whole composition range, with no phase boundaries to cross, so the alloy has uniform properties, no heat treatment response and no metallurgical surprises during processing or service.

Nickel provides resistance to alkalis, reducing acids and chloride stress corrosion cracking, and it is the element that carries performance in hydrofluoric acid, where few other materials survive.

Copper contributes resistance to seawater and brine, and it is why the alloy handles flowing seawater far better than a plain nickel material would. Copper also gives the alloy its characteristic behaviour in reducing conditions.

What is absent matters as much as what is present. There is no chromium, and without chromium there is no passive film in the stainless sense. That is precisely why oxidising media such as nitric acid, ferric chloride and cupric chloride attack the alloy rapidly, and why it must not be treated as a general-purpose corrosion material.

Iron up to 2.50%, manganese up to 2.00%, silicon up to 0.50% and carbon up to 0.30% are controlled residuals. Sulphur is held to 0.024% to protect hot workability.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Monel 400 Round Bar

ASTM B164 sets these, shown separately for annealed and hot-finished bar because the two conditions differ. All are minima and testing follows ASTM E8 or ASTM A370. Cold drawn and stress relieved material carries higher requirements again, and the condition must be stated on the order.

Annealed strength is modest at 480 MPa minimum tensile strength with 170 MPa minimum proof strength, with 35% minimum elongation. Note how far the conditions diverge: hot-worked bar up to 305 mm requires 552 MPa and 276 MPa, while cold-worked stress-relieved rounds from 12.7 to 88.9 mm require 600 MPa and 415 MPa. Proof strength more than doubles between annealed and cold-worked stress-relieved, so quoting a single figure for this grade is meaningless without the condition and the size.

The alloy is solid-solution strengthened only. There is no precipitation-hardening response and no transformation to exploit, so heat treatment cannot raise strength. Cold work is the only route, which is why cold drawn and stress relieved bar exists as a supply condition.

The modulus of elasticity at 179 GPa is noticeably lower than the roughly 200 GPa of steels and most nickel alloys, which matters for deflection-limited design and for bolted joints where stiffness affects load distribution.

Toughness is excellent and holds down to cryogenic temperatures, with no ductile-to-brittle transition, so the alloy is used in low-temperature service as well as ambient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Monel 400 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Round bar made from nickel-copper alloy UNS N04400 (Werkstoff 2.4360), containing 63% minimum nickel with 28-34% copper. Supplied annealed, hot-finished, or cold drawn and stress relieved to ASTM B164, it is best known as one of the few materials that performs reliably in hydrofluoric acid, and it also resists seawater, brine, alkalis and reducing acids.
Sometimes, and this catches people out. The alloy has a Curie temperature close to room temperature, typically between roughly 20 C and 50 C depending on the exact composition. Below that it is ferromagnetic and above it is not, so a bar may respond weakly to a magnet on a cold day and not on a warm one. Never specify it where genuinely non-magnetic behaviour is required.
In oxidising media. The alloy contains no chromium, so it forms no passive film in the stainless sense, and nitric acid, ferric chloride, cupric chloride and oxidising salts attack it rapidly. It is a specialist alloy for reducing conditions, hydrofluoric acid, seawater and alkalis, not a general-purpose corrosion material. Check the oxidising potential of the environment before specifying it.
ASTM B164 covers nickel-copper alloy rod, bar and wire and is the governing standard, with ASME SB-164 for pressure-retaining components and ASTM B564 for forgings. Dimensional tolerances come from the permissible variations within B164. The European material number is 2.4360 (NiCu30Fe) under DIN 17743, and NA 13 under BS 3076.
Annealed, ASTM B164 requires at least 480 MPa tensile strength, 195 MPa 0.2% proof strength and 35% elongation. Hot-finished material requires 550 MPa, 275 MPa and 30%. Cold drawn and stress relieved bar carries higher requirements again. Note the modulus of elasticity is 179 GPa, noticeably below the roughly 200 GPa of steels, which matters for deflection-limited design.
Because very few materials survive HF across a useful range of concentration and temperature, and Monel 400 is one of them. The nickel-copper composition resists the reducing, non-oxidising attack that HF represents, where stainless steels and most other alloys fail rapidly. Much of the world's HF alkylation plant is built from it. Note that aerated HF vapour can cause stress corrosion cracking, so residual stresses should be relieved.
No. Nickel and copper form a continuous solid solution with no phase boundaries and no precipitation-hardening response, so no heat treatment will raise strength. Cold work is the only route, which is why cold drawn and stress relieved bar is offered as a separate supply condition. Where a high-strength nickel-copper alloy is needed, Monel K500 is the age-hardenable version.
Diameters typically run 6 mm to 250 mm, with larger sizes forged on enquiry. Mill lengths are 3 to 6 metres, random or cut to length. Bar is offered hot-rolled and pickled, peeled, turned, cold-drawn, centreless ground or polished. State the delivery condition on the order, since annealed, hot-finished and cold drawn material carry different mechanical requirements.
