Product Description for Super Duplex Stainless Steel Zeron 100 Round Bar

ZERON® 100 is a tungsten- and copper-bearing super duplex (austenitic-ferritic) stainless steel round bar covered by UNS S32760 and EN 1.4501 (X2CrNiMoCuWN25-7-4). ZERON 100 is a registered trademark now held by Rolled Alloys, Inc. (formerly developed by Weir Materials, originating from earlier work by Mather + Platt); the underlying UNS S32760 chemistry is also produced by other mills under generic “Alloy 32760” or similar designations.

Zeron 100 shares the same base 25% chromium, 7% nickel, 3.5–4% molybdenum core chemistry as 2507 (UNS S32750), but adds deliberate tungsten (0.5–1.0%) and copper (0.5–1.0%) alloying. The tungsten addition is claimed by the producer to selectively enhance localized (pitting and crevice) corrosion resistance, while the copper addition improves resistance to reducing acid environments relative to tungsten-free duplex grades, though to a lesser degree than the higher-copper Ferralium 255. The alloy carries a guaranteed minimum Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PREN = %Cr + 3.3×%Mo + 16×%N) of 40, placing it firmly in the super duplex category alongside 2507 and Ferralium 255.

Zeron 100 round bar is supplied solution annealed and rapidly quenched to develop a balanced ferritic-austenitic microstructure (nominally 50:50). It is produced to ASTM A276 (bars/shapes) and ASTM A479 (bars for pressure vessels), with ASTM A182 Grade F55 covering the equivalent forged product form, and EN 10088-3 as the corresponding European bar standard. Zeron 100 is listed under NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for sour (H₂S) service and is referenced in NORSOK MDS specifications used widely in the offshore oil and gas sector.

Typical applications include subsea manifolds and pipework, wireline and umbilical tubing components, seawater reverse-osmosis desalination equipment, flue gas desulfurization systems, and sulfuric acid plant equipment. Because the alloy loses toughness with extended exposure above roughly 300°C (572°F), and because tensile/hardness limits can be size-dependent, buyers should confirm the governing product standard, service temperature range, and any NACE hardness restriction before ordering.

Common Applications of Super Duplex Stainless Steel Zeron 100 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Zeron 100 round bar is ordered to ASTM A276 or A314 for general bar/shapes use, or ASTM A479 where the bar is intended for a pressure-retaining application; the forged equivalent is covered by ASTM A182 Grade F55. All product forms require solution annealing and rapid quenching after hot working, since this dissolves intermetallic phases formed during hot deformation and establishes the balanced ferrite/austenite microstructure that gives the alloy its corrosion resistance bar must never be placed into service in the un-annealed, as-hot-worked condition. The producer (Rolled Alloys) publishes a guaranteed minimum PREN of 40 for Zeron 100, which is generally tighter than the calculated minimum implied by the bare compositional ranges alone, reflecting in-house melt-chemistry control beyond the base ASTM/EN specification. Zeron 100 is not recommended for continuous service above approximately 300°C (572°F), since extended exposure in this range promotes intermetallic (sigma) phase precipitation, substantially reducing toughness even though the material may still meet short-term strength requirements at that temperature. For sour-service (NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156) orders, hardness must be verified against the sour-service limit, which is typically more restrictive than the general ASTM A276 hardness ceiling. Welding should use ZERON 100X (or an equivalent matching duplex) filler metal to preserve the phase balance and corrosion performance of the weld metal.

Zeron 100’s chemistry builds on the same chromium-molybdenum-nitrogen base that gives 2507 its chloride pitting resistance, then adds two further alloying elements not present in 2507: tungsten (0.5–1.0%) and copper (0.5–1.0%).

Tungsten behaves similarly to molybdenum in stabilizing the passive film against localized attack and is reported by the producer to give a selective improvement in pitting and crevice corrosion resistance beyond what the PREN formula (which does not account for tungsten) alone would predict meaning two grades with an identical calculated PREN can perform differently if one contains tungsten and the other does not.

The copper addition, while smaller than in Ferralium 255 (0.5–1.0% versus 1.5–2.5%), still measurably improves resistance to non-oxidizing/reducing acids such as dilute sulfuric acid relative to copper-free super duplex grades. Nitrogen (0.20–0.30%) performs its usual dual role of boosting pitting resistance and stabilizing/strengthening the austenite phase to maintain the ferrite/austenite balance despite the high chromium and molybdenum content.

As with other super duplex grades, carbon is held low (0.030% max) to minimize sensitization risk during welding, and manganese/silicon are controlled primarily as residual/deoxidation elements rather than deliberate corrosion-resistance alloying additions.

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Alloy 32760 Round Bar

Zeron 100’s 550 MPa minimum yield strength roughly twice that of annealed 316L supports the same section-size and weight reduction benefits common to the super duplex family, which is a major reason it is specified for offshore structural, piping, and pressure-containing components where both strength and corrosion resistance are required simultaneously. The 25% minimum elongation and the alloy’s generally good Charpy impact performance, including in cold and sub-zero service (a requirement in many offshore and Arctic/North Sea specifications), reflect the toughness contribution of the austenite phase balancing the harder, more brittle ferrite phase. As with other super duplex grades, this toughness advantage is temperature-limited: prolonged service above roughly 300°C promotes embrittling intermetallic phases and reduces impact toughness even though short-term strength may remain acceptable, so continuous high-temperature service should be avoided. The controlled maximum hardness (310 HBW under current ASTM A276, tightened further for NACE MR0175 sour-service qualification) is primarily a safeguard against sulfide stress cracking in H₂S service rather than a wear-resistance specification. Machinability is broadly similar to other super duplex grades high strength and work-hardening behavior require slower cutting speeds, rigid setups, and appropriate tooling compared with standard austenitic stainless steel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Super Duplex Stainless Steel Zeron 100 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Zeron 100 is a tungsten- and copper-bearing super duplex stainless steel, UNS S32760 / EN 1.4501, developed originally by Weir Materials (trademark now held by Rolled Alloys), combining high strength with excellent chloride and acid corrosion resistance.
Round bar is typically supplied to ASTM A276 or A314 (bars/shapes) or ASTM A479 (pressure-vessel bar), and to EN 10088-3 in Europe.
The recognized cross-reference is EN/DIN 1.4501; there is no widely documented dedicated JIS, GB, or KS national grade for this tungsten/copper-bearing chemistry, so specification is normally made directly by UNS/ASTM/EN designation.
Both share a similar 25Cr-7Ni-4Mo-N base chemistry and PREN ≥ 40, but Zeron 100 adds deliberate tungsten (0.5–1.0%) and copper (0.5–1.0%) alloying, which the producer states gives additional localized-corrosion benefit and improved resistance to reducing acids, respectively, not captured by the standard PREN formula.
Solution annealed and rapidly water quenched to establish the balanced ferrite/austenite microstructure; it must not be used in the as-hot-worked, non-annealed condition.
Yes. It is welded using GTAW, SMAW, or other standard arc processes with a matching duplex filler metal (e.g., ZERON 100X), with controlled heat input needed to preserve phase balance and corrosion performance.
It carries a guaranteed minimum PREN of 40, giving excellent resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, plus improved resistance to sulfuric acid relative to tungsten/copper-free duplex grades.
Yes, subject to producer/distributor capability; confirm maximum diameter, length, and tolerance options against current stock before ordering.
