Product Description for Incoloy 825 Round Bar
Incoloy 825 is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy with molybdenum, copper and titanium additions, UNS N08825 and Werkstoff 2.4858. Bar ships to ASTM B425 with ASME SB-425 for pressure equipment.
The composition is 38-46% nickel, 19.5-23.5% chromium, 2.5-3.5% molybdenum and 1.5-3.0% copper, with 22% minimum iron and titanium at 0.6-1.2%. Each addition does a specific job. Nickel resists chloride stress corrosion cracking. Molybdenum handles pitting and crevice corrosion. Copper gives resistance in sulphuric and phosphoric acid, the same role it plays in 904L. Titanium stabilises carbon so the alloy resists intergranular attack after welding without post-weld heat treatment.
The result is an alloy that handles both oxidising and reducing acid conditions, and it is widely used in sulphuric acid service, pickling operations and sour oilfield environments.
It is not a high-temperature alloy. Service is normally limited to around 540 C, and prolonged exposure above that risks sensitisation and phase precipitation that reduce corrosion resistance.
Bar is supplied annealed. The alloy is solid-solution strengthened, so heat treatment cannot raise strength.
ASTM G28 intergranular corrosion testing is the usual supplementary requirement, and NACE MR0175 compliance should be requested where sour service applies, since neither is covered by the standard mechanical tests.
The usual range is 6 mm to 250 mm, as random lengths or cut to size. The alloy is non-magnetic and machining is demanding, with the rapid work hardening typical of solid-solution nickel alloys.
Machining is demanding, with the rapid work hardening typical of solid-solution nickel alloys, and welding uses matching or over-alloyed nickel-base filler.
Typical work is sulphuric and phosphoric acid plant, pickling equipment, sour service oilfield hardware, chemical process components and marine machinery.
Common Applications of Incoloy 825 Round Bar
➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.
➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.
➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.
➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Material is ordered to ASTM B425 under UNS N08825, with ASME SB-425 for pressure-retaining components and ASTM B564 for forgings. Dimensional tolerances come from the permissible variations within B425.
Delivery is annealed. The alloy is solid-solution strengthened with no precipitation-hardening response, so cold work is the only way to raise strength.
Titanium stabilisation is the feature that governs fabrication. Titanium at 0.6-1.2% combines with carbon in preference to chromium, so chromium stays dissolved in the matrix where it maintains the passive film. That allows welding without post-weld heat treatment while retaining resistance to intergranular attack, which is a significant practical advantage in fabricated acid plant.
Temperature is the limitation to watch. Service is normally capped near 540 C, and prolonged exposure above that can precipitate phases and sensitise the material, which shows up as reduced corrosion resistance in subsequent wet service rather than as any change in mechanical properties. This is a corrosion alloy, not a high-temperature alloy.
ASTM G28 intergranular corrosion testing is the usual supplementary requirement, and NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance should be requested where sour service applies.
Machining is demanding, with rapid work hardening typical of solid-solution nickel alloys. Welding uses matching or over-alloyed nickel-base filler.

Chemical Composition
View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Alloy 825 Round Bar
This alloy is unusual in that four separate additions each answer a specific corrosion problem, and understanding which does what explains where the material fits.
Nickel at 38.00-46.00% gives strong resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, the mechanism that limits austenitic stainless steels in warm chlorides, and it supports performance in reducing acids.
Molybdenum at 2.50-3.50% strengthens the passive film against localised breakdown, providing resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-bearing media.
Copper at 1.50-3.00% is the addition that handles sulphuric and phosphoric acid, exactly the role it plays in 904L stainless. Without it the alloy would perform poorly in those reducing acid conditions.
Titanium at 0.60-1.20% stabilises carbon as titanium carbide, keeping chromium in solution where it maintains the passive film. That is what allows welding without post-weld heat treatment while retaining resistance to intergranular attack.
Chromium at 19.50-23.50% builds the passive layer and covers oxidising conditions.
Carbon is capped at 0.05%, low enough to limit carbide formation even with the titanium stabilisation. Iron at 22% minimum reduces cost as it does in Alloy 800.

Mechanical Properties
Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Alloy 825 Round Bar
These are ASTM B425 requirements for annealed UNS N08825 bar, all minima. Testing follows ASTM E8 or ASTM A370.
At 586 MPa minimum tensile and 241 MPa minimum proof strength the alloy is somewhat stronger than annealed 316L but is still not a structural material. It is bought for corrosion resistance, and the mechanical requirements simply confirm the material was annealed properly.
The alloy is solid-solution strengthened with no precipitation-hardening response, so no heat treatment will increase strength. Cold work will, at the cost of ductility, and annealing removes the effect.
Ductility is high at 30% minimum elongation, and toughness remains good down to cryogenic temperatures because the structure is austenitic with no ductile-to-brittle transition.
For service applications the more meaningful acceptance criteria are corrosion tests rather than tensile results. ASTM G28 intergranular corrosion testing verifies that the titanium stabilisation is working and the material has not been sensitised, and it is worth making mandatory on the order for fabricated acid plant.
Where sour service applies, NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 sets hardness limits and environmental restrictions that must be confirmed on the certificate.
