Product Description for Nimonic 90 Round Bar
Nimonic 90 Round Bar is made from a wrought, age-hardenable nickel-chromium-cobalt alloy strengthened by titanium and aluminium. It is designated UNS N07090 and is known in Germany as 2.4632 (NiCr20Co18Ti). Bars are covered by UK aerospace specifications such as BS HR 2 and by DIN specifications.
The addition of about 18% cobalt raises the solvus temperature of the strengthening phase and improves creep resistance compared with Nimonic 80A. The alloy was developed for service at stresses and temperatures up to about 920°C.
After solution treatment and ageing, a fine gamma prime precipitate gives high tensile, creep and rupture strength. The 20% chromium base provides good resistance to oxidation and hot corrosion. Nimonic 90 is non-magnetic in both solution-treated and aged states.
Bars are supplied solution treated for machining and forming, or fully heat treated when ready-to-use strength is required. Machining is slower than for stainless steel and needs rigid set-ups, sharp tools and generous coolant.
Common applications include gas turbine blades, discs and forgings, ring sections, hot-working tools, high-temperature springs and bolts, and other parts that must hold their strength at high temperature. It is also used as a filler metal for welding Nimonic 80A. Buyers should state the specification, heat treatment and any stress-rupture or grain size testing on the order. Nimonic 90 is also widely used for hot springs and high-temperature fasteners. Bars are usually bought solution treated for machining and then aged, and many orders include stress-rupture tests to prove creep life before parts go into service.
Common Applications of Nimonic 90 Round Bar
➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.
➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.
➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.
➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Technical Specifications
Get the key technical specifications for Nimonic 90 Round Bar
Nimonic 90 Round Bar is ordered to UK aerospace specifications such as BS HR 2, to DIN specifications for 2.4632, or to proprietary mill specifications. The specification controls chemistry, heat treatment, tests and tolerances, so it should be stated on the order.
A common heat treatment is solution treatment at about 1080°C for 8 hours with air cooling, then ageing at about 700°C for 16 hours with air cooling. Other cycles are used for special property balances.
The physical data for Nimonic 90 are reference values for the aged condition.
Nimonic 90 bars are checked for chemistry, tensile strength, hardness and, for turbine work, stress-rupture life. Stress-rupture testing, grain size checks, ultrasonic testing and third-party inspection are common for turbine parts.
Nimonic 90 is often bought against engine maker or aerospace material specifications, which add limits on grain size, cleanliness and stress-rupture life. Copy these requirements into the purchase order rather than only naming the alloy. Heat-treated bars should be marked with the heat treatment batch, and the certificate should record the times and temperatures used. For springs, specify the cold-work level and final ageing cycle.
Cutting and grinding of aged bar should use low-stress methods to avoid surface cracks.

Chemical Composition
View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Nimonic 90 Round Bar
The composition limits shown are those commonly published for Nimonic 90 in the BS HR series and by the producer. Check the exact limits in the ordered specification.
Chromium at 18–21% provides resistance to oxidation and hot corrosion. Nickel forms the base of the alloy.
Cobalt at 15–21% is the main difference from Nimonic 80A. It lowers the stacking fault energy of the matrix and raises the temperature at which the strengthening phase dissolves. This improves creep and rupture strength at higher temperatures.
Titanium at 2.0–3.0% and aluminium at 1.0–2.0% form the gamma prime phase during ageing, which gives high strength. Carbon forms grain boundary carbides. Boron and zirconium strengthen grain boundaries and improve rupture life. Iron, copper, manganese and silicon are residuals, and sulfur is kept very low. Cobalt at 15–21% is what separates Nimonic 90 from Nimonic 80A. It raises the temperature at which the gamma prime phase dissolves, so the alloy keeps its strength to higher temperatures. Titanium at 2.0–3.0% and aluminium at 1.0–2.0% form the strengthening phase. Iron is held low, at 1.5% maximum, to keep the structure stable.
Boron and zirconium are held to small amounts because they strengthen grain boundaries and improve rupture life.

Mechanical Properties
Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Nimonic 90 Round Bar
The values shown are reference room-temperature properties for fully heat-treated Nimonic 90 bar and are for guidance only. Mandatory minimum values, test locations and heat treatments are set by the ordered BS HR, DIN or proprietary specification.
In the solution-treated state the alloy is softer and easier to machine. After ageing, gamma prime precipitation raises strength to the levels shown while keeping useful ductility.
The main advantage over Nimonic 80A is higher creep and rupture strength at high temperature, allowing service up to about 920°C at suitable stresses. Stress-rupture testing is often part of the order. Compare the Nimonic 90 certificate with the ordered specification, including the ageing cycle used. The values in the table are reference values for the solution-treated and aged condition and depend on the exact cycle. For hot parts, the real design limits come from creep and stress-rupture data at the service temperature. Hardness is a simple check that ageing has been done. If a part is too soft after heat treatment, it may have been under-aged or overheated. Ask for stress-rupture results on the certificate for turbine parts and springs.
