Hastelloy C22 Round Bar

Hastelloy C22 round bar (UNS N06022 / 2.4602) is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy with tungsten, supplied solution annealed to ASTM B574. Higher chromium than C276 gives better performance in oxidising conditions such as nitric acid and ferric chloride, while retaining strong reducing-acid resistance, which suits mixed-acid chemical plant, scrubbers and pharmaceutical reactors.

Product Description for Hastelloy C22 Round Bar

Hastelloy C22 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy with tungsten, UNS N06022 and Werkstoff 2.4602. Bar is supplied to ASTM B574 with ASME SB-574 for pressure equipment.

It is the oxidising-side counterpart to C276. Chromium runs higher at 20.0-22.5% and molybdenum lower at 12.5-14.5%, with 2.5-3.5% tungsten. That shift in balance gives markedly better performance in oxidising conditions such as nitric acid, ferric chloride, cupric chloride and wet chlorine, while retaining strong resistance in reducing conditions, though less than C276 manages.

The pitting resistance equivalent lands around 65, and the alloy resists chloride pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking in severe mixed-acid service.

Like C276, carbon is held very low at 0.015% maximum and silicon at 0.08% maximum, so the material can be welded and used as welded without post-weld solution treatment. C22 is often described as having better weld-region corrosion resistance than C276 in oxidising media, and it is frequently chosen where a process stream changes character.

Bar is supplied solution annealed and rapidly quenched. The alloy is solid-solution strengthened only.

For wet corrosion service, prolonged exposure above roughly 650 C should be avoided because of intermetallic precipitation.

Choosing between C22 and C276 comes down to where the service sits. Neither is generally superior, and where a stream shifts between oxidising and reducing character, C22 covers more ground.

Sizes run 6 mm to 250 mm, in random or cut lengths. The alloy is non-magnetic and machining is difficult, with very high work hardening rates.

Typical work is mixed-acid chemical plant, flue-gas desulphurisation, pickling equipment, pharmaceutical reactors and waste treatment hardware.

Common Applications of Hastelloy C22 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Order to ASTM B574 under UNS N06022, with ASME SB-574 for pressure-retaining components and ASTM B564 for forgings. Dimensional tolerances come from the permissible variations within B574.

Delivery is solution annealed with rapid quenching, and the quench rate matters for the same reason it does in C276: high molybdenum and tungsten make intermetallic precipitation easy if cooling through the intermediate range is slow.

Choosing between C22 and C276 comes down to where the service sits on the corrosion map. C22 has more chromium and less molybdenum, which favours oxidising conditions such as nitric acid, ferric and cupric chloride and wet chlorine. C276 has more molybdenum and less chromium, which favours reducing conditions such as hydrochloric acid. Neither is generally superior. Where a process stream shifts between oxidising and reducing character, or where the exact condition is uncertain, C22 is often the safer choice because it covers more ground overall.

Carbon at 0.015% maximum and silicon at 0.08% maximum allow use in the as-welded condition without post-weld solution treatment.

For wet corrosion service, avoid prolonged exposure above roughly 650 C. Machining is difficult, with very high work hardening rates requiring rigid setups and positive feeds.

Chromium at 20.00-22.50% is the element that sets C22 apart from C276, where it runs 14.50-16.50%. That extra chromium strengthens the passive film in oxidising conditions, giving markedly better resistance in nitric acid, ferric and cupric chloride and wet chlorine, all environments where a high-molybdenum, lower-chromium alloy struggles.

Molybdenum at 12.50-14.50% is correspondingly lower than in C276 but still very high by any general standard. It provides resistance in reducing conditions such as hydrochloric acid and contributes heavily to the pitting resistance equivalent of roughly 65.

Tungsten at 2.50-3.50% behaves like molybdenum, reinforcing resistance to localised attack in both regimes.

The trade between chromium and molybdenum is the whole story of choosing between C22 and C276, and neither composition is better in the abstract. Each covers one side of the corrosion map more strongly.

Carbon at 0.015% maximum and silicon at 0.08% maximum prevent grain boundary precipitation during welding, which is what allows use in the as-welded condition.

Iron at 2.00-6.00% and cobalt up to 2.50% are controlled constituents, with nickel forming the balance and providing the matrix and chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Alloy C22 Round Bar

ASTM B574 sets these for solution-annealed UNS N06022 bar, all minima. Testing follows ASTM E8 or ASTM A370.

At 690 MPa minimum tensile and 310 MPa minimum proof strength, the alloy is slightly stronger in proof strength than C276 while requiring higher elongation at 45% minimum. Neither difference is a reason to select one over the other, since both are bought for corrosion resistance rather than mechanical performance, and the mechanical requirements largely serve to confirm the material was properly solution annealed.

Ductility is very high and toughness holds down to cryogenic temperatures, with no ductile-to-brittle transition in the fully austenitic solid-solution structure.

The alloy is solid-solution strengthened with no precipitation-hardening response, so heat treatment cannot raise strength and cold work is the only route.

For acceptance, ASTM G28 Method A intergranular corrosion testing is far more informative than the tensile results. It confirms that the solution anneal dissolved intermetallic phases and that the quench was fast enough. Material can pass tensile testing comfortably while carrying intermetallic precipitation that would show up immediately in a G28 test and would cost corrosion performance in service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Hastelloy C22 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Round bar made from nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy UNS N06022 (Werkstoff 2.4602), containing 20.0-22.5% chromium, 12.5-14.5% molybdenum and 2.5-3.5% tungsten with nickel as the balance. Supplied solution annealed to ASTM B574, it resists both oxidising and reducing conditions, with a pitting resistance equivalent around 65.
The chromium and molybdenum balance. C22 has more chromium at 20.0-22.5% and less molybdenum at 12.5-14.5%, which favours oxidising conditions such as nitric acid, ferric chloride and wet chlorine. C276 has more molybdenum at 15-17% and less chromium at 14.5-16.5%, which favours reducing conditions such as hydrochloric acid. Neither is generally superior, so choose by service environment.
Match the alloy to the environment. If the service is predominantly reducing, such as hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, C276 performs better. If it is oxidising, such as nitric acid, ferric or cupric chloride or wet chlorine, C22 performs better. Where the stream shifts between the two, or where the exact condition is uncertain, C22 is often the safer choice because it covers more of the corrosion map overall.
ASTM B574 covers rod and is the governing standard, with ASME SB-574 for pressure-retaining components and ASTM B564 for forgings. Dimensional tolerances come from the permissible variations within B574. The European material number is 2.4602 (NiCr21Mo14W) under DIN 17744. Hastelloy is a registered trade mark of Haynes International, so order against the UNS number.
Solution annealed, ASTM B574 requires at least 690 MPa tensile strength, 310 MPa 0.2% proof strength and 45% elongation. Proof strength is slightly above C276 and elongation is higher, though neither difference should drive alloy selection, since both are corrosion materials and the mechanical requirements mainly confirm proper solution annealing.
Yes, and it can be used in the as-welded condition. Carbon capped at 0.015% and silicon at 0.08% prevent carbide and intermetallic precipitation at grain boundaries during welding, so no post-weld solution treatment is required and resistance to intergranular attack is retained. Matching ERNiCrMo-10 filler is normal, and heat input should still be controlled to limit precipitation in the heat-affected zone.
For wet corrosion service, prolonged exposure above roughly 650 C should be avoided, because intermetallic phases precipitate and reduce corrosion resistance. That damage does not appear in mechanical testing, which makes it easy to miss. Oxidation resistance extends higher, but the wet-service limit governs whenever the component returns to a corrosive stream.
Diameters typically run 6 mm to 250 mm, with larger sizes forged on enquiry. Mill lengths are 3 to 6 metres, random or cut to length. Bar is offered hot-rolled and pickled, peeled, turned, centreless ground or polished. For severe service, specify ASTM G28 Method A testing on the order, since it is the direct check that the solution anneal and quench were carried out properly.
