Product Description for Alloy Steel F5 Round Bar

F5 is the ASTM A182 grade designation for a 5% chromium, 0.5% molybdenum low-alloy steel, UNS K41545. Stock is supplied to ASTM A182 / A182M with dimensional requirements to ASTM A29 / A29M, the general standard for carbon and alloy steel bars. The same alloy appears as P5 in ASTM A335 seamless pipe and Grade 5 in ASTM A387 plate.

This is a chromium-molybdenum creep-resisting steel rather than a stainless one. At 4-6% chromium it has useful resistance to oxidation and to sulphidic corrosion in hot hydrocarbon streams, but it will rust in wet service and is not a substitute for stainless in aqueous conditions.

The molybdenum addition of 0.44-0.65% is what provides creep strength, and the grade is used continuously to around 650 C in refinery heater and piping service.

Bar is supplied annealed, or normalised and tempered, with tempering at 675 C minimum. Hardness is controlled to a 143-217 HBW range, and unlike the ceilings applied to stainless grades this is a mandatory band with both a floor and a limit.

Sizes run 10 mm to 300 mm, hot-finished or cold-finished. The steel is ferromagnetic and readily machinable in the supplied condition, particularly when ordered annealed.

Welding needs preheat of roughly 200-300 C with a maintained interpass temperature and post-weld heat treatment below the tempering temperature, since a 5% chromium steel air hardens and will crack if welded cold.

Typical work is refinery heater components, hydrocarbon piping hardware, valve bodies and stems, flange and fitting stock, and bolting for elevated-temperature service.

Common Applications of Alloy Steel F5 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Order to ASTM A182 / A182M as Grade F5. Dimensional tolerance, straightness and surface condition come from ASTM A29 / A29M, the general requirements standard for carbon and alloy steel bars, not from ASTM A484 which applies to stainless.

Two delivery conditions are permitted. Annealed material is softer and easier to machine. Normalised and tempered material gives better toughness and a more uniform structure through heavy sections, and tempering must be carried out at 675 C minimum after normalising from 955 C. State which you want, because they machine differently.

Hardness is specified as a 143-217 HBW range rather than a maximum, and that distinction matters. The floor confirms the material was not over-tempered into a soft condition with inadequate creep strength, and the ceiling confirms it was tempered enough to be tough and machinable. Material outside the band is rejectable either way.

Welding requires preheat, typically 200-300 C, with an interpass temperature maintained and post-weld heat treatment carried out below the tempering temperature. Skipping preheat on a 5% chromium steel risks hydrogen cracking.

For hot hydrocarbon service the grade resists sulphidic corrosion reasonably well, and its performance is usually assessed against modified McConomy or Couper-Gorman data rather than from the composition alone.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Alloy Steel F5 Round Bar

Chromium at 4.00-6.00% does two jobs that both matter in refinery service. It forms a protective oxide that resists scaling to around 650 C, and it substantially improves resistance to sulphidic corrosion in hot hydrocarbon streams, which is the mechanism that eats plain carbon steel in crude and vacuum unit piping. What it does not do at this level is make the steel stainless, so the material will rust in wet or aqueous conditions.

Molybdenum at 0.44-0.65% supplies the creep strength. It strengthens the solid solution and forms fine carbides that resist coarsening during long exposure at temperature, slowing the diffusion processes that cause a steel to sag and eventually rupture under sustained load.

Carbon is capped at 0.15%. Enough to give strength through carbide formation, low enough to keep the steel weldable with preheat rather than unweldable.

Manganese at 0.30-0.60% deoxidises and adds hardenability. Silicon up to 0.50% deoxidises and makes a small contribution to oxidation resistance.

Nickel is limited to 0.50% as a residual rather than added deliberately. Phosphorus and sulphur are each held to 0.030%, tighter than plain structural steel, to protect creep ductility and resistance to temper embrittlement.

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Alloy Steel F5 Round Bar

ASTM A182 / A182M sets these for Grade F5, tested to ASTM A370. Tensile, proof strength, elongation and reduction of area are minima. Hardness is a specified range with both a floor and a ceiling, and this is where alloy steel grades differ from the stainless grades covered by ASTM A276 and A479, where hardness is normally only a maximum.

The floor of 143 HBW matters as much as the 217 HBW limit. Material below it has been over-tempered, which means the carbide structure has coarsened and the creep strength the grade exists to provide has been compromised, even though tensile testing at room temperature might still pass. Material above the ceiling has not been tempered enough and will be harder to machine and lower in toughness.

Room-temperature strength is modest and is not why anyone specifies F5. The grade is chosen for what it does above 400 C, where design has to run on creep-rupture and allowable stress data from ASME BPVC rather than on the tensile figures shown here.

No mandatory Charpy requirement applies under A182 for this grade, but impact testing at the design temperature is commonly added as a supplementary requirement for low-temperature or heavy-section work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Alloy Steel F5 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Round bar made to ASTM A182 / A182M Grade F5, a 5% chromium, 0.5% molybdenum low-alloy creep-resisting steel, UNS K41545. It is supplied annealed, or normalised and tempered at 675 C minimum. The same alloy appears as P5 in ASTM A335 pipe and Grade 5 in ASTM A387 plate. It is used for hot hydrocarbon service, not for wet or aqueous corrosion.
No. At 4-6% chromium it falls well short of the roughly 10.5% needed to form a passive film, so it will rust in wet or humid conditions and offers no aqueous corrosion resistance. What the chromium does provide is oxidation resistance at temperature and good resistance to sulphidic corrosion in hot hydrocarbon streams, which is a different mechanism and the reason refineries use it.
ASTM A182 / A182M Grade F5 governs the material. Dimensional tolerance, straightness and surface condition follow ASTM A29 / A29M, the general requirements standard for carbon and alloy steel bars, rather than ASTM A484 which applies only to stainless. State the delivery condition on the order, since annealed and normalised-and-tempered material behave differently under the tool.
UNS K41545 in the USA, with the same alloy designated P5 in ASTM A335 seamless pipe and Grade 5 in ASTM A387 plate. In Europe the corresponding grade is X11CrMo5 (1.7362) to EN 10216-2 and the former DIN 17175. No direct JIS, GB/T or KS equivalent is identified here, so Asian supply is normally made against the ASTM designation.
ASTM A182 requires at least 485 MPa tensile strength, 275 MPa 0.2% proof strength, 20% elongation and 35% reduction of area, with hardness falling inside a mandatory 143-217 HBW range. Note that the hardness figure is a range with a floor, not just a ceiling, so material can be rejected for being too soft as well as too hard.
Because both ends tell you something. Material below 143 HBW has been over-tempered, meaning the carbide structure has coarsened and creep strength is compromised, even if room-temperature tensile testing still passes. Material above 217 HBW has not been tempered enough, leaving it harder to machine and lower in toughness. Stainless grades usually carry only a hardness ceiling, so this catches people out.
Yes, with proper procedure. Preheat of roughly 200-300 C is required, interpass temperature must be maintained, and post-weld heat treatment is carried out below the tempering temperature. A 5% chromium steel will air harden, so skipping preheat risks hydrogen cracking in the heat-affected zone. Matching low-alloy filler is normal, and the welding procedure should be qualified rather than assumed.
Diameters typically run 10 mm to 300 mm, with larger sizes forged on enquiry. Mill lengths are 3 to 6 metres, random or cut to length, with tolerances to ASTM A29 / A29M. Bar is offered hot-rolled, rough-turned, peeled, smooth-turned or centreless ground. Specify the delivery condition, annealed or normalised and tempered, when you place the order.
