Product Description for Alloy Steel 25CrMo4 Round Bar

Alloy Steel 25CrMo4 Round Bar is a low-carbon chromium-molybdenum steel for quenching and tempering to EN 10083-3, with material number 1.7218. It contains about 0.22–0.29% carbon, 0.90–1.20% chromium and 0.15–0.30% molybdenum.

Because its carbon content is lower than that of 34CrMo4 and 42CrMo4, the steel reaches moderate strength after quenching and tempering but keeps very good toughness and better weldability. In 25CrMo4, molybdenum also gives useful strength at moderate temperatures, which suits flanges and bolting.

The grade is also used in the normalised condition and for pressure parts and fittings, where its creep strength at moderate temperatures is useful. It is well known in the aerospace and automotive sectors as the European counterpart of the American 4130 family.

Bars are supplied hot rolled or forged, in the soft annealed (+A), treated for shearing (+S), normalised or quenched and tempered (+QT) condition. 25CrMo4 bars can be finished by peeling, turning or cold drawing.

Common applications include shafts, axles, steering parts, flanges, valve bodies, fasteners, hydraulic parts, gas cylinder components, and welded structural parts that need a good balance of strength and toughness. Nearest international grades include AISI 4130 and JIS SCM430, which are similar but not identical. Its lower carbon lets thick sections be water quenched with less risk of cracking, and its carbon equivalent of about 0.64 makes welding simpler than with 34CrMo4 or 42CrMo4. That balance suits parts that are welded into assemblies or must absorb shock loads, where toughness matters more than peak strength. It is widely stocked in Europe.

Common Applications of Alloy Steel 25CrMo4 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Alloy Steel 25CrMo4 Round Bar is ordered to EN 10083-3 for quenched and tempered alloy steels. For flanges and forged fittings, 25CrMo4 can be ordered to EN 10250-3. The delivery condition, such as +A, normalised or +QT, and the ruling section should be stated on the order.

Hardening is usually done from about 840–880°C with water or oil quenching, followed by tempering at about 540–680°C. Normalising is done at about 860–900°C.

The lower carbon content gives a lower carbon equivalent than 42CrMo4, which makes welding easier. Preheat is still recommended for thicker sections.

Physical data for 25CrMo4 are reference values. Standard tests include heat analysis, tensile, hardness and impact where specified. Ultrasonic testing and grain size checks can be ordered.

In EN 10083-3, 25CrMo4 +QT properties are given only up to 160 mm, and the minimum yield strength in the largest band is just 400 MPa, because its lower carbon limits the strength of thick sections. For bigger parts, order normalised bar or agree properties with the mill. Soft annealed hardness is limited to 212 HB. For welded assemblies, ask the supplier for the actual carbon equivalent from the heat analysis, and qualify the welding procedure on the same grade and thickness. For pressure equipment, check whether the design code requires a different product standard, such as EN 10269 for bolting or EN 10222-2 for forgings.

Chemical Composition

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for 25CrMo4 Round Bar

The table shows the EN 10083-3 heat analysis limits for 25CrMo4.

Carbon at 0.22–0.29% sets the strength level after hardening. It is lower than in 34CrMo4 and 42CrMo4, which gives better toughness and weldability at the cost of lower maximum strength.

Chromium at 0.90–1.20% raises hardenability and adds some resistance to oxidation and softening at temperature. Molybdenum at 0.15–0.30% improves hardenability, creep strength and resistance to temper embrittlement.

Manganese in 25CrMo4 adds some hardenability and deoxidises the melt. Phosphorus and sulfur are impurities kept low to protect toughness and weld quality. The lower carbon also reduces the risk of cracking during quenching, so 25CrMo4 can often be water quenched without problems that would affect higher-carbon grades. Manganese at 0.60–0.90% and silicon up to 0.40% are similar to other Cr-Mo grades, so hardenability comes mostly from chromium and molybdenum. The chemistry is close to AISI 4130, which has carbon of 0.28–0.33% and slightly lower manganese. The carbon equivalent from mid-range values is about 0.64, compared with about 0.80 for 42CrMo4, which is why welding is simpler. Buyers should still check the actual heat values on the certificate, because the upper limits can push the carbon equivalent higher.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of 25CrMo4 Round Bar

The values shown are EN 10083-3 requirements for 25CrMo4 in the quenched and tempered (+QT) condition. They fall as bar diameter rises, because larger sections cool more slowly during quenching.

The grade gives moderate strength with high impact toughness. Minimum impact energy of 50 J at room temperature applies in the medium diameter range, which is higher than for 42CrMo4.

In the soft annealed state, hardness is limited for good machinability. For design, use the values that match the ruling section and confirm results on the mill certificate. In EN 10083-3, the +QT minimum yield strength for 25CrMo4 is 700 MPa up to 16 mm, 600 MPa for 16–40 mm, 450 MPa for 40–100 mm and 400 MPa for 100–160 mm, with tensile strength given as a range. The 50 J minimum impact energy is higher than the 35 J required for 42CrMo4, which shows its better toughness. This makes the grade suitable for parts that see shock loads or low temperatures. When the part is welded after heat treatment, the heat-affected zone will soften or harden locally, so post-weld heat treatment is often needed to restore uniform properties.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Alloy Steel 25CrMo4 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Choose 25CrMo4 when weldability and toughness matter more than maximum strength, for example in welded shafts, pressure parts and automotive components. Its lower carbon makes it easier to weld than 42CrMo4. Choose 42CrMo4 when higher strength or surface hardness is required. It also has a higher impact requirement, 50 J against 35 J for 42CrMo4.
They are close but not identical. AISI 4130 has carbon of 0.28–0.33%, which is at the high end of or above the 25CrMo4 range of 0.22–0.29%. Both are weldable Cr-Mo steels with similar uses. For substitution, compare chemistry, strength class and impact requirements. If the drawing names 25CrMo4 to EN 10083-3, order 1.7218 to that standard.
Its lower carbon gives a lower carbon equivalent than 34CrMo4 or 42CrMo4, so the heat-affected zone is less likely to become very hard and crack. It can be welded with preheat of about 150–250°C, depending on thickness, and low-hydrogen consumables. Post-weld heat treatment is often used for thick or highly stressed joints.
EN 10083-3 gives +QT properties for 25CrMo4 up to 160 mm, with a minimum yield strength of only 400 MPa in the 100–160 mm band. Above 100 mm, the lower carbon and moderate hardenability mean the core will not reach full strength. For larger parts, choose 34CrMo4, 42CrMo4 or 34CrNiMo6, or agree reduced properties with the supplier.
Harden 25CrMo4 by austenitising at about 840–900°C, quenching in water or oil and tempering at about 540–680°C. It welds more easily than higher-carbon Cr-Mo steels, but thicker sections still need preheat and low-hydrogen consumables. It machines well in the annealed or normalised condition. Soft annealed bar is limited to 212 HB, which gives easy machining.
The strength of 25CrMo4 after quenching and tempering is lower than 34CrMo4 or 42CrMo4, and its hardenability limits it to small and medium sections. It is not suitable for high-wear surfaces unless case hardened. It has no corrosion resistance and needs protection in wet service. In the 100–160 mm band, minimum yield falls to 400 MPa, so it is a poor choice for large, highly loaded shafts.
