Product Description for Nitronic 50 Round Bar

Nitronic 50 round bar is a high-strength, nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless steel bar product supplied under UNS S20910, generically designated XM-19 in ASTM A276 and ASTM A479. “Nitronic 50” is a registered trademark of Cleveland-Cliffs (formerly AK Steel/Armco); the same underlying alloy is also traded generically as XM-19 or 22-13-5 stainless.

The alloy is alloyed with elevated chromium (20.5–23.5%), nickel (11.5–13.5%), molybdenum (1.50–3.00%), manganese (4.00–6.00%), and controlled nitrogen, with small additions of niobium (columbium) and vanadium. This combination produces mechanical strength roughly double the room-temperature yield strength of Types 304 and 316 in the standard annealed condition, while retaining a fully austenitic structure. Corrosion resistance is superior to Types 316, 316L, 317, and 317L in many media, including improved resistance to pitting, crevice attack, and intergranular corrosion, along with excellent resistance to sulfide stress cracking. Unlike many austenitic grades, Nitronic 50 does not become significantly magnetic after severe cold working or exposure to sub-zero temperatures, and it retains good mechanical properties from cryogenic temperatures (-196°C) to moderately elevated service temperatures (up to roughly 650°C under ASME Section VIII rules for the high-strength condition).

Round bar is supplied in the standard annealed condition (solution annealed at 1066–1121°C) as the default, with High-Strength (HS) and Super High-Strength (Super HS) conditions available from the producer via special hot-working practices for applications requiring a higher guaranteed yield strength; these strengthened conditions cannot be re-forged, welded, or brazed without loss of the enhanced properties. The material is readily fabricated by machining and welding using conventional austenitic techniques, though machining requires more rigid tooling than for Types 304/316 due to higher strength and work-hardening tendency.

Typical industries include oil and gas (including sour-service applications qualified under NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-3 and NACE MR0103, at hardness levels up to HRC 35 maximum), offshore and subsea equipment, marine and naval engineering, chemical, petrochemical, and fertilizer processing, nuclear fuel recycling, pulp and paper, textile, and food processing. Buyers should confirm the required condition (annealed vs. HS vs. Super HS), the applicable product standard (A276 for bar and shapes, A479 for bar for boilers/pressure vessels, A314 for bar and billet), and any sour-service hardness qualification before specifying, since strength, corrosion resistance, and NACE compliance vary by condition.

Common Applications of Nitronic 50 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Get the key technical specifications for Nitronic 50 Round Bar

Nitronic 50 round bar is identified by UNS S20910 and the ASTM generic designation XM-19, primarily referenced in ASTM A276 (bar and shapes), ASTM A479 (bar for boilers and pressure vessels), and ASTM A314 (bar and billet).

It is not hardenable by heat treatment; the standard delivery condition is solution annealed at either 1066°C (1950°F) recommended for most applications as it provides higher mechanical properties with good corrosion resistance or 1121°C (2050°F), which should be specified when the material will be used in the as-welded condition in strongly corrosive media, since it minimizes intergranular attack risk.

High-Strength (HS) and Super High-Strength (Super HS) conditions are available from the producer through special hot-rolling or rotary-forging practices; because the added strength comes from mill processing, these conditions cannot subsequently be hot-forged, welded, or brazed without losing the enhanced properties, and HS/Super HS bars produced by rotary forging may show somewhat reduced corrosion and sulfide-stress-cracking resistance compared to bar-mill HS product.

Both the annealed and HS conditions have been qualified under NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-3 and NACE MR0103 for sour-service use, subject to a hardness ceiling of HRC 35 maximum not every condition or heat automatically meets this, so sour-service qualification should be confirmed per heat/lot.

Carbon Equivalent (CEV) does not apply, as this parameter is used for weldability assessment of carbon and low-alloy steels, not fully austenitic stainless steels. Buyers should always confirm diameter range, delivery condition, and applicable standard with the supplying mill before order placement, since minimum guaranteed properties can vary by condition and, in some cases, by producer

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for N50 Round Bar

The composition of Nitronic 50 is engineered around nitrogen as the primary strengthening element: nitrogen occupies interstitial sites in the austenite lattice, producing substantial solid-solution strengthening without the need for heat-treatable hardening.

Elevated chromium (20.5–23.5%) and molybdenum (1.5–3.0%) work together with nitrogen to raise pitting and crevice corrosion resistance well above Types 304 and 316, particularly in chloride-bearing environments producer laboratory data show Nitronic 50 resisting ferric chloride pitting and crevicing conditions that visibly pit and crevice-corrode Type 316 bar.

Nickel (11.5–13.5%) stabilizes the austenitic structure and supports toughness, including at sub-zero temperatures down to -196°C. Manganese (4.0–6.0%) increases nitrogen solubility during melting, allowing the higher nitrogen content to be achieved, and also contributes modestly to strength.

Niobium and vanadium additions form fine carbonitrides that help control grain structure and add incremental strength. Low carbon (0.06% max) minimizes chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries, supporting resistance to intergranular corrosion, including in simulated heat-affected-zone conditions.

The combined effect is a fully austenitic, non-magnetic stainless steel significantly stronger than conventional 300-series grades while remaining weldable and machinable, though machining requires more rigid tooling and positive cutting action due to a pronounced work-hardening tendency (machinability is roughly 21% of AISI B1112 free-machining steel, versus ~45% for Type 304, per producer machinability testing).

In the annealed condition, minimum yield strength of 379–415 MPa (depending on whether the base ASTM A276 floor or the producer’s own guarantee applies) is roughly double the annealed minimum yield strength of Types 304/316, allowing Nitronic 50 to be used in load-bearing components at reduced section size compared to conventional austenitic grades.

The 35% minimum elongation and 55% minimum reduction of area indicate good ductility despite the elevated strength, supporting cold forming and resistance to sudden overload without brittle failure.

These properties are retained from cryogenic temperatures (-196°C) to moderately elevated service, which is a distinguishing characteristic versus conventional 300-series stainless steels.

The alloy is not hardenable by heat treatment, higher strength beyond the annealed minimums is obtained only by specifying the High-Strength or Super High-Strength condition, both of which trade some ductility and, in HS bars produced by rotary forging, some corrosion resistance, for increased yield strength; the strength increase is also size-dependent, being most pronounced in smaller diameters.

Machinability and formability are broadly comparable to other high-nickel austenitic stainless steels but require rigid tooling, positive cutting action, and adequate cooling due to a pronounced work-hardening tendency producer testing shows Nitronic 50 machining at roughly half the cutting rate used for Types 304/316 with high-speed tool steel, improving with coated carbide tooling.
