Product Description for Stainless Steel 904L Round Bar

904L (UNS N08904) is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel, and bar is normally ordered to ASTM A276 / A276M and ASTM A479 / A479M, with dimensions to ASTM A484 / A484M. European practice specifies it as grade 1.4539 to EN 10088-3.

The composition is low-carbon 20Cr-25Ni-4.5Mo with a deliberate 1-2% copper addition. High nickel resists stress corrosion cracking in chloride environments, molybdenum handles pitting and crevice attack, and copper is what lifts performance in sulphuric and phosphoric acid. Carbon is capped at 0.020%, so the grade resists sensitisation and can be welded in heavy sections without post-weld heat treatment.

Bar is supplied solution annealed, normally treated at about 1100-1150 C followed by a fast quench. It can be hot-finished or cold-finished by drawing, peeling, turning or grinding. Stock covers 6 mm to 300 mm either random or cut to length.

The structure is fully austenitic, so the bar is non-magnetic when annealed, cannot be hardened thermally, and gains strength only through cold work. Its PREN of roughly 34-36 sits between standard 316L and the 6% molybdenum super austenitic grades.

Where welding is required, over-alloyed nickel-base filler such as ERNiCrMo-3 is used to make up for molybdenum segregation in the weld metal.

904L costs considerably more than 316L, so it is normally chosen only where the service environment genuinely calls for it, and machined components are often preferred to heavy welded fabrication.

Common uses include sulphuric acid plant, pickling-line hardware, flue-gas desulphurisation equipment, seawater and brackish-water systems, pumps, valves, shafts and fasteners, spread across chemical processing, petrochemicals, pulp and paper, pollution control and offshore oil and gas.

Common Applications of Stainless Steel 904L Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Order to ASTM A276 / A276M or ASTM A479 / A479M under UNS N08904, or to EN 10088-3 as 1.4539 in the +AT solution-annealed condition. ASME SA-479 applies where the bar forms part of a pressure-retaining assembly. Dimensional tolerance, straightness and out-of-round follow ASTM A484 / A484M, or EN 10060 and EN 10278 in European practice.

Solution annealing is normally 1100-1150 C followed by a fast water quench. Speed matters more here than in leaner grades: the high molybdenum content makes 904L prone to sigma and chi phase precipitation if cooling through 600-1000 C drags, and either phase costs toughness and corrosion resistance.

Bar can be hot-finished or cold-finished. Cold finishing raises strength through work hardening, so where full corrosion performance and the specified minimum ductility are both needed, a final solution anneal is usually requested.

The grade cannot be hardened thermally. Annealed material is essentially non-magnetic, though heavy cold work can produce a slight magnetic response.

Supplementary testing commonly added to the order includes intergranular corrosion testing to ASTM A262 Practice E, ferrite content checks, and ASTM G48 pitting tests where chloride service is critical. Since 904L is an expensive alloy, the intended environment, standard, condition and finish are all worth confirming before the order goes out.

Chemical Composition

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for SS 904L Round Bar

Nickel at 23.00-28.00% is the most expensive addition and the most important one. It holds the austenitic structure stable despite the high molybdenum, and at this level it gives strong resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, the failure mode that limits 304 and 316 above roughly 60 C.

Chromium at 19.00-23.00% creates the protective film behind general corrosion resistance, particularly in oxidising media. Molybdenum at 4.00-5.00% toughens that film against localised breakdown, handling pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride solutions and carrying most of the pitting resistance equivalent of roughly 34-36.

Copper at 1.00-2.00% is what separates 904L from other super austenitic grades. It improves resistance in reducing acids, sulphuric acid across a wide span of concentrations and temperatures in particular, and helps in phosphoric acid service too.

Carbon is restricted to 0.020% maximum. That low limit stops chromium carbide from precipitating at grain boundaries during welding or hot exposure, so the grade keeps its resistance to intergranular attack without stabilising elements or post-weld heat treatment.

Nitrogen carries no limit for UNS N08904 in the ASTM composition tables, so none is quoted here. EN 10088-3 does cap it at 0.15% for grade 1.4539, and where nitrogen is present it adds strength and supports pitting resistance. Manganese and silicon deoxidise, while phosphorus and sulphur stay restricted to protect hot workability and corrosion behaviour.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of SS 904L Round Bar

The figures shown come from ASTM A276 / A276M and ASTM A479 / A479M for solution-annealed UNS N08904 bar, all minima except hardness. ASTM A370 governs the testing, carried out on material in its delivered condition. EN 10088-3 handles 1.4539 in the +AT condition differently, calling for the same 220 MPa minimum proof strength but a tensile range of roughly 490-690 MPa with 35% minimum elongation, so quote the two standards separately rather than blending them.

Annealed 904L gives moderate strength with very high ductility and toughness. Impact energy stays high down to cryogenic temperatures, since a fully austenitic structure has no ductile-to-brittle transition, though ASTM A276 imposes no mandatory Charpy requirement on this grade.

Nothing thermal will harden the alloy. Cold drawing raises tensile and proof strength considerably at the cost of elongation, and can introduce slight magnetic permeability, so cold-worked bar is specified only where the extra strength is genuinely needed.

Section size shows up in heavy bar, where a slower quench from solution temperature can let intermetallics precipitate and pull toughness down. Design should work from the minimum values of the ordered standard and condition, with actual results taken from the mill test certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Stainless Steel 904L Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Round bar made from high-alloy austenitic stainless steel 904L (UNS N08904 / 1.4539), carrying roughly 20% chromium, 25% nickel and 4.5% molybdenum with 1-2% copper and carbon held to 0.020% maximum. Supply is solution annealed to ASTM A276 / A276M or ASTM A479 / A479M. It is the grade you move to when acid and chloride service has outrun what 316L can handle.
Normally ASTM A276 / A276M or ASTM A479 / A479M under UNS N08904, with ASME SA-479 for pressure-equipment use. Dimensions and surface follow ASTM A484 / A484M. European supply is to EN 10088-3 as grade 1.4539 in the +AT solution-annealed condition. Put the exact standard and condition on the purchase order so they carry through to the mill certificate.
UNS N08904 in the USA, 1.4539 (X1NiCrMoCu25-20-5) to EN 10088-3 in Europe and the United Kingdom, SUS 890L under JIS G4303 in Japan, 015Cr21Ni26Mo5Cu2 under GB/T 1220 in China, STS 890L under KS D 3706 in South Korea, and X1NiCrMoCu25-20-5 under ISO 15510. The composition limits line up closely across these standards, with only minor element ranges differing.
Diameters typically run 6 mm to 300 mm, with larger sizes available as forged bar on enquiry. Mill lengths are 3 to 6 metres, random or cut to a required length. Diameter, straightness and length tolerances follow ASTM A484 / A484M and vary with size and finish class. Cold-drawn, peeled, turned, ground and polished finishes are all available where a closer tolerance or better surface is wanted.
Solution annealed, ASTM A276 and A479 call for at least 490 MPa tensile strength, 220 MPa 0.2% proof strength, 35% elongation and 40% reduction of area, with hardness typically around 90 HRB or below. EN 10088-3 for 1.4539 asks for the same 220 MPa proof strength but frames tensile as a 490-690 MPa range. Toughness holds up down to cryogenic temperatures.
904L carries far more nickel and molybdenum than 316L, plus copper. The extra nickel gives much better resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, which limits 316L above roughly 60 C, and the extra molybdenum pushes the pitting resistance equivalent to about 34-36 against roughly 24 for 316L. Copper covers sulphuric and phosphoric acid, where 316L struggles. You pay significantly more for all of it.
Yes. Carbon held to 0.020% maximum keeps chromium carbide from precipitating at grain boundaries, so heavy sections can be welded without post-weld heat treatment and the material keeps its resistance to intergranular attack. Over-alloyed nickel-base fillers such as ERNiCrMo-3 are normal, since they make up for molybdenum segregation in the weld metal. Keep heat input controlled and interpass temperature low to avoid intermetallic precipitation.
Not when solution annealed. The structure is fully austenitic, so annealed bar is essentially non-magnetic. Heavy cold work can bring on a slight magnetic response, which matters if the application is magnetically sensitive or if anyone is using a magnet to sort material on site. Solution annealing at 1100-1150 C followed by a fast quench puts the fully austenitic, non-magnetic condition back.
