Product Description for Alloy Steel F11 Round Bar

F11 is the ASTM A182 grade designation for a 1.25% chromium, 0.5% molybdenum low-alloy steel with a deliberate silicon addition, UNS K11572. Bar ships to ASTM A182 / A182M with dimensions to ASTM A29 / A29M. The same alloy is P11 in ASTM A335 pipe and Grade 11 in ASTM A387 plate.

This is one of the workhorse chromium-molybdenum grades of refinery and power plant construction. At 1.00-1.50% chromium it offers moderate oxidation resistance and useful creep strength to around 550 C, at a cost well below the higher chromium grades. It is not stainless and will rust in wet service.

ASTM A182 divides F11 into Classes 1, 2 and 3, distinguished by tempering treatment and the resulting strength level. Class 1 is the softest at 415 MPa minimum tensile, Class 2 sits at 485 MPa, and Class 3 at 515 MPa. Each carries its own mandatory hardness range, and the classes are not interchangeable, so the class must be on the order.

Bar is supplied annealed, or normalised and tempered, with the tempering temperature set by class.

Stock covers 10 mm to 300 mm, hot-finished or cold-finished. The steel is ferromagnetic and machines readily, particularly in the softer Class 1 condition.

All three classes share the same composition, so a certificate showing correct chemistry proves nothing about which class you have. Only the tensile and hardness results identify it.

Typical work is heater and boiler hardware, valve and flange stock, hot bolting, pressure-vessel components and general elevated-temperature piping parts.

Common Applications of Alloy Steel F11 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Specify ASTM A182 / A182M as Grade F11, with dimensional requirements from ASTM A29 / A29M rather than the stainless standard A484.

The class system is the thing to get right. Class 1 is tempered highest and comes out softest, at 415 MPa minimum tensile with a 121-174 HBW hardness range. Class 2 gives 485 MPa minimum tensile with 143-207 HBW. Class 3 gives 515 MPa minimum tensile with 156-207 HBW. All three share the same composition, so a certificate showing correct chemistry proves nothing about which class you have. The hardness result and the tensile result are what identify it, and the class must appear on the purchase order.

Class 1 is usually chosen where machinability and toughness matter more than strength, Class 2 for general service, and Class 3 where higher strength is needed.

Welding requires preheat, typically 150-250 C, with post-weld heat treatment below the tempering temperature. At 1.25% chromium the hardenability is lower than F5 or F9, so the requirements are less severe, but they are still requirements rather than suggestions.

For elevated-temperature design, creep-rupture data and ASME allowable stresses govern above about 400 C, and the practical ceiling is around 550 C.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Alloy Steel F11 Round Bar

Chromium at 1.00-1.50% gives moderate oxidation resistance and a modest improvement in sulphidic corrosion resistance over plain carbon steel. More importantly it works with molybdenum to form the stable alloy carbides that carry creep strength. At this level the steel is emphatically not stainless and will rust in wet or humid conditions.

Molybdenum at 0.44-0.65% is the main creep-strengthening element. It strengthens the solid solution and forms carbides that resist coarsening under sustained load at temperature, which is what keeps the steel from deforming slowly over years of service.

Carbon is specified as a range of 0.05-0.15% rather than a simple maximum. The floor matters because carbon is needed to form those alloy carbides, and a heat at the bottom of the range will temper to a lower strength than one at the top.

Silicon at 0.50-1.00% carries a deliberate minimum, which is what distinguishes F11 from F12. It deoxidises and adds to oxidation resistance.

Manganese at 0.30-0.60% deoxidises and provides hardenability. Phosphorus and sulphur are each held to 0.030%, protecting creep ductility and limiting susceptibility to temper embrittlement during long service in the sensitive temperature range.

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Alloy Steel F11 Round Bar

The table carries ASTM A182 / A182M requirements for Grade F11, tested to ASTM A370. Because the standard defines three classes, every strength and hardness figure is shown against its class rather than merged into a single set. All three classes share the same composition, so chemistry alone cannot tell them apart.

Class 1 is the softest and toughest, at 415 MPa tensile minimum alongside 205 MPa minimum proof strength, with a 121-174 HBW hardness range. It is chosen where machinability, formability and toughness matter more than strength.

Class 2 is the general-purpose choice at 485 MPa minimum tensile and 275 MPa minimum proof strength, with 143-207 HBW.

Class 3 is the strongest at 515 MPa minimum tensile and 310 MPa minimum proof strength, with 156-207 HBW.

Reduction of area requirements also differ by class, with Class 1 requiring more than Classes 2 and 3, reflecting its softer, tougher condition.

Each hardness band is mandatory at both ends. A result below the floor indicates over-tempering with compromised creep strength, and a result above the ceiling indicates insufficient tempering. Above about 400 C, creep-rupture data and ASME allowable stresses replace these figures as the design basis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Alloy Steel F11 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Round bar made to ASTM A182 / A182M Grade F11, a 1.25% chromium, 0.5% molybdenum low-alloy creep-resisting steel with a deliberate silicon addition, UNS K11572. It is supplied in Classes 1, 2 or 3 by strength level, either annealed or normalised and tempered. The same alloy is P11 in ASTM A335 pipe and Grade 11 in ASTM A387 plate.
They are strength levels produced by different tempering treatments from the same composition. Class 1 gives 415 MPa minimum tensile with a 121-174 HBW hardness range, Class 2 gives 485 MPa with 143-207 HBW, and Class 3 gives 515 MPa with 156-207 HBW. Because chemistry is identical across all three, only the mechanical and hardness results identify the class, so it must be stated on the order.
ASTM A182 / A182M Grade F11 governs the material, with dimensional tolerance, straightness and surface condition from ASTM A29 / A29M rather than the stainless standard ASTM A484. In Europe the nearest grade is 13CrMo4-5 (1.7335) under EN 10216-2, though composition ranges differ slightly, so treat it as close rather than exact.
Chromium and silicon. F11 runs 1.00-1.50% chromium with a deliberate silicon range of 0.50-1.00%, while F12 runs 0.80-1.25% chromium with silicon simply capped at 0.50%. F12 also permits looser phosphorus and sulphur limits. The two are close enough that both map to similar European grades, but they are separate ASTM designations and should not be substituted without checking the specification.
It depends on the class. Class 1 requires 415 MPa minimum tensile and 205 MPa proof strength, Class 2 requires 485 MPa and 275 MPa, and Class 3 requires 515 MPa and 310 MPa. All classes require 20% minimum elongation, and each has its own mandatory hardness range. Always quote the class alongside any mechanical figure, or the number is meaningless.
No. At 1.00-1.50% chromium it is nowhere near the roughly 10.5% needed to form a passive film, so it rusts readily in wet or humid conditions and offers no aqueous corrosion resistance. The chromium is there to work with molybdenum in forming creep-resistant carbides and to give modest oxidation resistance at temperature, which is a completely different purpose.
Yes, and more easily than the higher chromium grades. Preheat of roughly 150-250 C is normal, with post-weld heat treatment carried out below the tempering temperature. Hardenability at 1.25% chromium is lower than F5 or F9, so the requirements are less demanding, but preheat and post-weld heat treatment are still required rather than optional. Qualify the procedure rather than assuming.
Diameters typically run 10 mm to 300 mm, with larger sizes forged on enquiry. Mill lengths are 3 to 6 metres, random or cut to length, with tolerances to ASTM A29 / A29M. Bar is offered hot-rolled, rough-turned, peeled, smooth-turned or centreless ground. State both the class and the delivery condition when ordering, since the class determines strength and machinability.
