Product Description for Stainless Steel 15-5 PH Round Bar

Stainless Steel 15-5 PH Round Bar carries the UNS number S15500 and the material number 1.4545. Bar is supplied to ASTM A564 / A564M (Type XM-12); tolerances, straightness and finish come from ASTM A484 / A484M. EN and GB/T list an equivalent grade. JIS and KS do not.

The grade is a copper-strengthened precipitation-hardening stainless steel closely related to 17-4 PH, but with a chemistry balanced to be essentially ferrite-free. Removing delta ferrite improves transverse toughness and ductility, which is why the grade is preferred for aerospace forgings and heavy sections where properties across the grain matter.

Supply is in the solution annealed (Condition A) or precipitation hardened (H900 to H1150) condition, in diameters between 3 mm and 500 mm and random lengths of 3 to 6 m; larger diameters are forged and cut lengths are available. Surface options run from hot finished and pickled through cold drawn, peeled and turned to ground and polished. Strength is developed by a low-temperature precipitation-hardening (ageing) treatment carried out after machining.

Fabricators use it for structural forgings, landing gear parts, valve components and heavy machined sections across aerospace, defence, oil and gas, nuclear and power generation. Material normally ships against an EN 10204 3.1 certificate showing heat analysis, mechanical results and delivery condition. The melting range is roughly 1404 – 1440 C. The bar is ferromagnetic in every condition. Density is around 7.80 g/cm3 and the modulus of elasticity about 196 GPa. Third party inspection, positive material identification and non-destructive examination can be added at order stage.

Common Applications of Stainless Steel 15-5 PH Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Orders are normally placed to ASTM A564 / A564M (Type XM-12), with ASTM A484 / A484M carrying the dimensional side. European practice specifies the same steel to EN as 1.4545 (X5CrNiCu15-5). Whichever it is, the standard, the condition and any extra testing belong on the purchase order.

Bar is supplied in Condition A, solution treated at approximately 1040 C and air cooled. Single-step ageing between 480 C and 620 C sets the final strength, using the same H900 to H1150 designations as 17-4 PH.

Bar reaches its finish two ways: hot rolling or forging followed by heat treatment and pickling, or a further cold operation such as drawing, peeling, turning or grinding. Tolerances on diameter, out of round, straightness and length depend on both size and finish class.

The absence of delta ferrite is achieved through a tighter chromium and nickel balance and consumable-electrode remelting, which also improves cleanliness and transverse property consistency in large sections.

Treat the physical properties as typical producer figures; the standard does not set them. Mechanical testing follows ASTM A370 and everything tested appears on the certificate.

Chromium is reduced to 14-15.5% and nickel raised to 3.5-5.5% relative to 17-4 PH, which suppresses delta ferrite. Copper at 2.5-4.5% remains the precipitation hardener and niobium stabilises carbon.

Chromium runs 14.00 to 15.50% here, and it is what makes the steel stainless: it builds the passive oxide film that resists attack. Nickel at 3.50 to 5.50% stabilises the structure and improves ductility and toughness. The standard also fixes copper 2.50 to 4.50%, niobium + tantalum 0.15 to 0.45%. Carbon is capped at 0.07%.

Manganese and silicon go in as deoxidisers during melting and add a little strength. Phosphorus and sulphur are residuals, held low because they hurt hot working, welding and corrosion resistance; sulphur is raised only when a free machining variant is wanted.

Limits differ a little between the ASTM, EN, JIS, GB/T and KS versions. That usually makes no practical difference, but it can in aggressive or high temperature duty, which is why the certified heat analysis is worth reading against the ordered specification. Chemical analysis is carried out to ASTM A751. Where the composition table shows no limit for an element, the standard sets no requirement and the element need not be determined or reported.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of SS 15-5 PH Round Bar

Strength levels match 17-4 PH, with 1310 MPa minimum tensile in H900, but transverse ductility and toughness are consistently better because the structure is free of delta ferrite stringers.

Everything depends on the ageing treatment applied after solution treatment. A low ageing temperature buys strength and hardness; a higher one trades them for toughness and resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Results are certified against the ordered condition, tested to ASTM A370 and ASTM E18.

Design to the minima of the ordered standard and condition; the certificate carries what the heat actually achieved. Bar diameter has an effect of its own, through cooling rate in heat treatment and the amount of working the section received.

This combination of very high strength with useful corrosion resistance and low distortion during hardening is why the grade is selected for highly loaded aerospace, subsea and rotating machinery components. Fatigue performance is good, but notch sensitivity rises with strength level, so higher ageing temperatures are often specified where impact or stress corrosion resistance matters more than peak strength.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Stainless Steel 15-5 PH Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Stainless Steel 15-5 PH Round Bar is solid round bar in grade 15-5 PH, precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless steel designated UNS S15500 and W.Nr. 1.4545. It is made to ASTM A564 / A564M (Type XM-12), supplied in the solution annealed (Condition A) or precipitation hardened (H900 to H1150) condition, and machined into structural forgings, landing gear parts, valve components and heavy machined sections for the aerospace, defence, oil and gas, nuclear and power generation industries. Finish options run from hot finished through cold drawn and peeled to ground and polished.
ASTM A564 / A564M (Type XM-12) covers the material itself, and ASTM A484 / A484M covers dimensions, straightness and surface. The European designation is 1.4545 (X5CrNiCu15-5). Mechanical testing is to ASTM A370, with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate as the usual documentation. Both the standard and the delivery condition belong on the purchase order.
The equivalents are EN 10088-3: 1.4545 (X5CrNiCu15-5); GB/T 1220: 05Cr15Ni5Cu4Nb; ISO 15510: X5CrNiCu15-5. Not every country lists this grade, and the limits differ slightly where they do, so equivalence on pressure or code work should be confirmed against the certified heat analysis rather than assumed.
The usual range is 3 mm to 500 mm, going higher by forging. Expect 3 mm to 100 mm in cold finished bar and 16 mm to 500 mm hot finished or forged. Standard lengths are random 3 to 6 m, and cut lengths are available. ASTM A484 / A484M or a written agreement sets the tolerances.
Hardness (Condition A, solution annealed) 363 (max) / 38 HRC (max) HBW; Tensile Strength (H900) 1310 (min) MPa; Yield Strength 0.2% (H900) 1170 (min) MPa; Elongation in 50 mm (H900, longitudinal) 10 (min) %. Those figures belong to the solution annealed (Condition A) or precipitation hardened (H900 to H1150) condition, tested to ASTM A370. Diameter, finish and heat treatment change what a given bar delivers, so use the standard's minima for design and the mill certificate for actual results.
Principal elements: C 0.07% max, Cr 14.00-15.50%, Ni 3.50-5.50%, Cu 2.50-4.50%, Nb + Ta 0.15-0.45%. Manganese, silicon, phosphorus and sulphur sit inside the standard limits. Chromium is reduced to 14-15.5% and nickel raised to 3.5-5.5% relative to 17-4 PH, which suppresses delta ferrite. The ASTM, EN, JIS and GB/T versions differ a little, which is why the heat analysis on the certificate is worth comparing with the ordered specification.
Yes. Random mill lengths, fixed or cut lengths to an agreed tolerance, and machining to drawing are all available, as are hot finished and pickled, cold drawn, peeled, turned, centreless ground and polished surfaces. Choose bright or ground bar for tight tolerance and precision machining, hot finished bar where cost matters more. Ends, chamfers, marking and packing are specified the same way.
The chemistry of 15-5 PH is balanced with lower chromium and higher nickel so that the structure is essentially free of delta ferrite, whereas 17-4 PH normally contains some. Strength levels and ageing conditions are effectively the same, but 15-5 PH gives better transverse toughness and ductility, which matters in forgings and heavy sections. Grade 17-4 PH is more widely stocked and generally more economical, so it remains the default unless transverse properties govern.
