Product Description for Stainless Steel 317 Round Bar
Stainless Steel 317 Round Bar is an austenitic chromium-nickel grade sold as UNS S31700 and W.Nr. 1.4449. The bar standard is ASTM A276 / A276M. Dimensional and surface requirements sit in ASTM A484 / A484M. EN, JIS, GB/T and KS all carry an equivalent designation.
The grade carries 3-4% molybdenum with 18-20% chromium and 11-15% nickel, a deliberately richer alloy balance than 316. The additional molybdenum and nickel raise the pitting resistance equivalent to approximately 30 and improve performance in sulphuric, phosphoric and acetic acid service as well as in chloride-bearing process streams. Carbon is permitted to 0.08% maximum.
Bar leaves the mill in the solution annealed (Condition A, +AT) condition. Depending on the tolerance and surface a job needs, it can be hot finished, cold drawn, peeled, rough or smooth turned, centreless ground or polished. Diameters from 3 mm to 500 mm are usual, with larger sizes forged to order, in random 3 to 6 m lengths or cut to length. The grade cannot be hardened by heat treatment; higher strength is obtained only through cold working.
Work done in this grade includes shafts, agitators, fittings and machined process components, mostly for the flue-gas desulphurisation, pulp and paper, chemical processing and textile industries industries. An EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate covering heat analysis, mechanical test results and heat treatment condition is the normal documentation. The melting range is roughly 1375 – 1400 C. In the annealed condition the steel is non-magnetic, though cold work can leave it slightly magnetic. The pitting resistance equivalent, Cr plus 3.3Mo plus 16N, works out at approximately 30 (typical).
Common Applications of Stainless Steel 317 Round Bar
➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.
➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.
➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.
➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Technical Specifications

ASTM A276 / A276M and ASTM A479 / A479M is the usual ordering specification and ASTM A484 / A484M holds the tolerances. The European designation is 1.4449 (X3CrNiMo18-12-3). State the standard, the delivery condition and any supplementary testing when ordering.
Solution annealing is carried out at approximately 1040-1120 C followed by rapid quenching to dissolve carbides and any intermetallic phases and to restore full austenite.
The route is either hot finishing, meaning rolling or forging with heat treatment and pickling, or cold finishing by drawing, peeling, turning or grinding. Size and finish class together decide the diameter, out of round, straightness and length tolerances.
With a PREN of roughly 30, the grade occupies the range between 316 and 904L and is frequently specified for flue-gas desulphurisation and pulp bleaching duties.
Physical property figures are typical producer data rather than standard requirements. Mechanical testing follows ASTM A370, and the certificate records analysis, test results, heat treatment and heat number. End condition, chamfering, marking and packing are settled at order stage along with the length tolerance.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for SS 317 Round Bar
Raising molybdenum from the 2-3% of 316 to 3-4% produces a measurable increase in critical pitting and crevice corrosion temperature. Nickel is increased in parallel to keep the structure fully austenitic against the ferrite-forming influence of molybdenum.
Chromium runs 18.00 to 20.00% here, and it is what makes the steel stainless: it builds the passive oxide film that resists attack. Nickel at 11.00 to 15.00% stabilises the structure and improves ductility and toughness. The standard also fixes molybdenum 3.00 to 4.00%, nitrogen to 0.10% maximum. Carbon is capped at 0.08%.
Manganese and silicon are deoxidisers left over from melting and contribute modest solid solution strengthening. Phosphorus and sulphur are kept to low maxima, since both damage hot workability, weldability and corrosion resistance unless machinability is the priority.
The ASTM, EN, JIS, GB/T and KS versions are close but not identical. Compare the heat analysis on the mill certificate with the standard actually ordered before accepting the material for critical service. Chemical analysis is carried out to ASTM A751. Where the composition table shows no limit for an element, the standard sets no requirement and the element need not be determined or reported.

Mechanical Properties
Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of SS 317 Round Bar
Strength minima match the standard austenitic pattern at 515 MPa tensile and 205 MPa yield, with high ductility retained in the annealed condition.
The figures apply to solution annealed bar and are checked by tensile testing to ASTM A370 at room temperature. Cold finished bar work hardens while it is drawn or ground, so what arrives is often stronger than the minimum and less ductile than it. Toughness holds up to cryogenic temperatures, with no ductile to brittle transition.
For design, use the specified minima of the standard and condition ordered and take the real numbers from the mill certificate. Section size matters too, since diameter affects cooling rate during heat treatment and how much hot or cold work the bar has seen.
In selection terms, moderate strength combined with very high ductility and toughness favours components that must be formed, welded or extensively machined rather than carry high stress in thin sections. Where greater strength is needed at similar corrosion resistance, cold-worked bar, a duplex grade or a precipitation-hardening grade is normally evaluated instead. Machinability is moderate, and work hardening during cutting should be managed with sharp tooling, positive feed and rigid setups.
