Product Description for Copper Nickel 70/30 Round Bar
Copper Nickel 70/30 Round Bar is a solid cylindrical bar produced from copper-nickel alloy UNS C71500, containing nominally 70% copper and 30% nickel with a controlled iron addition. Rod and bar are supplied to ASTM B151 / B151M, and the European designation is CuNi30Mn1Fe (CW354H).
The higher nickel content relative to the 90/10 alloy gives greater strength, a higher tolerance to seawater flow velocity and improved resistance to corrosion in more aggressive and higher-temperature conditions. The alloy withstands seawater velocities of roughly 4.5 m/s in continuous service against about 3.0-3.5 m/s for 90/10, which makes it the preferred choice for high-velocity piping, pump internals and heat exchanger components where flow-induced attack would otherwise govern.
Like the 90/10 alloy, the material releases copper ions at a low rate and therefore resists biofouling without antifouling coatings or continuous chlorination, though the effect is somewhat weaker at the higher nickel content. It does not suffer chloride stress-corrosion cracking, and it holds up better than 90/10 in sulphide-polluted seawater.
Bar is supplied annealed or hard drawn in diameters from about 6 mm to 200 mm and lengths of 3 to 6 m. The alloy is a single-phase solid solution and cannot be hardened by heat treatment. It is non-magnetic and retains toughness at low temperature.
Typical applications include seawater piping fittings and valve components, condenser and heat exchanger tube sheets, pump and propeller shaft components, offshore and desalination hardware, brine heater parts, and marine and naval fittings.
Common Applications of Copper Nickel 70/30 Round Bar
➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.
➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.
➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.
➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Get the key technical specifications for Copper Nickel 70/30 Round Bar
Copper Nickel 70/30 Round Bar is supplied to ASTM B151 / B151M for copper-nickel rod, bar and shapes, adopted by ASME as SB151 for pressure applications. In Europe the corresponding standards are EN 12163 and EN 12164 for CuNi30Mn1Fe (CW354H).
Material is ordered in a specified temper, most commonly annealed O60 for maximum ductility or hard drawn H04 for higher strength, with intermediate M30 and H01 tempers also standard. Tensile properties are the basis of acceptance for every temper of this alloy. The alloy is a single-phase solid solution and cannot be hardened by heat treatment, so all strengthening comes from cold work.
Annealing is carried out at approximately 760-870 deg C, higher than for the 90/10 alloy because of the greater nickel content. Correct annealing practice keeps the iron addition in solid solution, which is what provides resistance to impingement attack in flowing seawater.
The principal engineering advantage over 90/10 is tolerance to flow. The alloy withstands continuous seawater velocities of around 4.5 m/s, so it is specified for pump internals, high-velocity piping and heat exchanger inlet ends where local turbulence is unavoidable. It also performs better in sulphide-polluted seawater and at higher temperature.
Machining is more demanding than for the 90/10 alloy because the higher nickel content increases work hardening, so sharp tooling, positive rake and generous feeds are recommended.
Welding is straightforward using matching ERCuNi filler. Surfaces must be free of oil, grease and carbon residue, which cause porosity. Testing includes tensile testing to ASTM E8 / E8M.

Nickel at 29.0-33.0% is the defining addition and roughly three times the level in the 90/10 alloy. It strengthens the copper matrix by solid solution, lifting tensile and yield strength well above the 90/10 level, and it improves corrosion resistance in more aggressive conditions, at higher temperature and in sulphide-polluted seawater. The higher nickel also raises the velocity at which the protective film remains stable, which is the main reason for selecting this alloy over 90/10.
Iron at 0.40-1.0% is lower than in the 90/10 alloy but serves the same essential purpose. Retained in solid solution by correct annealing, iron is incorporated into the protective cuprous oxide film and makes it more adherent and resistant to removal by turbulent flow. A lower addition is sufficient here because the higher nickel content already improves film stability.
Manganese up to 1.0% acts as a deoxidiser, ties up residual sulphur and contributes to erosion resistance.
Zinc is limited to 1.0% as a residual, and lead to 0.05% because lead segregates to grain boundaries and causes hot shortness during hot working and welding.
ASTM B151 sets no phosphorus, sulphur or carbon limits for C71500. Those limits apply only to the closely related welding grade C71520, which caps phosphorus and sulphur at 0.02% and carbon at 0.05% to prevent surface carbon films that would promote local galvanic attack.
Copper makes up the balance at approximately 67-69%, and when all listed elements are determined the sum must be at least 99.5%. One trade-off: the higher nickel content weakens the copper ion release that gives biofouling resistance, so the antifouling effect is weaker than in the 90/10 alloy.

Mechanical Properties
Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of CuNi 70/30 Round Bar
The values listed are the minima of ASTM B151 / B151M Table 6 for UNS C71500 round rod, and tensile properties are the basis of acceptance or rejection for all tempers of this alloy. Unlike the 90/10 grade, the annealed requirements are themselves size-dependent, falling from 360 MPa tensile at up to 12 mm, to 330 MPa at 12 to 25 mm, to 310 MPa above 25 mm, with a constant 125 MPa minimum yield strength and 30% minimum elongation throughout.
As with all copper alloys, yield strength is determined at 0.5% extension under load rather than by the 0.2% offset method used for steels, and the two bases are not directly interchangeable.
The hard drawn H04 temper gives 550 MPa tensile and 415 MPa yield at up to 12 mm, reducing to 515 and 400 MPa at 12 to 25 mm and 485 and 380 MPa at 25 to 50 mm, with elongation falling to 8-10%. An intermediate H01 temper is also standard. Larger bars take proportionally less cold reduction, so the requirements fall as the size goes up.
In the annealed condition the alloy is roughly 30 to 40% stronger than the 90/10 grade, a direct consequence of the higher nickel content in solid solution. It is a single-phase alloy and cannot be strengthened by heat treatment. ASTM B151 specifies no hardness requirement, and the 152 GPa modulus is around 75% that of steel.
