Product Description for Hastelloy C276 Round Bar

Hastelloy C276 is a nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy with tungsten, UNS N10276 and Werkstoff 2.4819. Stock is supplied to ASTM B574 with ASME SB-574 for pressure equipment.

It is among the most universally corrosion-resistant materials available. Molybdenum at 15-17% handles reducing conditions including hydrochloric and sulphuric acid, chromium at 14.5-16.5% covers oxidising conditions, and tungsten at 3-4.5% reinforces both. The pitting resistance equivalent lands near 68, far above any stainless or duplex grade, and the alloy resists chloride pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking in severe service.

What made C276 the industry standard rather than earlier Hastelloy C is the residual control. Carbon is capped at 0.010% and silicon at 0.08%, both extraordinarily low, and that is what allows the alloy to be welded and used in the as-welded condition without a post-weld solution treatment. Earlier versions required solution annealing after welding, which is impractical on site.

Bar is supplied solution annealed. The alloy is solid-solution strengthened with no hardening heat treatment.

For wet corrosion service, exposure above roughly 650 C should be avoided, since intermetallic precipitation reduces corrosion resistance even though oxidation resistance extends far higher.

ASTM G28 Method A testing is the usual supplementary requirement, and machining is difficult because the alloy work hardens very rapidly, so rigid setups and positive feeds are needed.

Diameters run 6 mm to 250 mm, random length or cut to order. The alloy is non-magnetic.

Typical work is flue-gas desulphurisation, chemical process reactors, pulp bleaching, acid plant hardware, sour gas service and pollution control equipment.

Common Applications of Hastelloy C276 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Supply runs to ASTM B574 under UNS N10276, with ASME SB-574 for pressure-retaining components and ASTM B564 for forgings. Dimensional tolerances come from the permissible variations within B574.

Delivery is solution annealed with rapid quenching. The quench matters because the very high molybdenum and tungsten content makes intermetallic precipitation easy if cooling through the intermediate range is slow, and any such precipitation reduces both toughness and corrosion resistance.

The extremely low carbon and silicon limits are the alloy’s defining process feature. At 0.010% carbon maximum and 0.08% silicon maximum, both far below normal alloy practice, the material can be welded and placed in service as welded without a post-weld solution treatment. Earlier Hastelloy C required solution annealing after welding, which is simply not practical for site fabrication, and removing that requirement is what made C276 the industry workhorse.

For wet corrosion service, avoid prolonged exposure above roughly 650 C. Intermetallic phases precipitate and reduce corrosion resistance, and this is not visible in mechanical testing. Oxidation resistance extends considerably higher, but that is irrelevant if the component then returns to wet service.

ASTM G28 Method A testing is the usual supplementary requirement. Machining is difficult, with very high work hardening rates.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Alloy C276 Round Bar

Molybdenum at 15.00-17.00% is the highest of any alloy in common commercial use and it is what gives C276 its resistance in reducing conditions, including hydrochloric and sulphuric acid where chromium-bearing alloys fail. It is also weighted 3.3 times in the pitting resistance equivalent, driving that figure to roughly 68.

Chromium at 14.50-16.50% covers the opposite half of the corrosion map, handling oxidising conditions. The combination of very high molybdenum with useful chromium is why the alloy performs across both oxidising and reducing environments, which very few materials manage.

Tungsten at 3.00-4.50% behaves much like molybdenum, reinforcing resistance to localised attack in both regimes.

Carbon at 0.010% maximum and silicon at 0.08% maximum are the limits that define the modern alloy. Both are extraordinarily low, and both exist to prevent carbide and intermetallic precipitation at grain boundaries during welding. That is what allows the material to be used as welded, without the post-weld solution treatment that earlier Hastelloy C required.

Iron at 4.00-7.00% and cobalt up to 2.50% are controlled constituents. Nickel forms the balance, typically around 57%, providing the matrix and resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Alloy C276 Round Bar

These are ASTM B574 requirements for solution-annealed UNS N10276 bar, all minima. Testing follows ASTM E8 or ASTM A370.

At 690 MPa minimum tensile plus 283 MPa minimum proof strength the alloy is moderately strong, comparable to a nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless. Nobody buys C276 for its mechanical properties. It is a corrosion alloy, and the mechanical requirements exist mainly to confirm the material was properly solution annealed.

Elongation of 40% minimum is high and reflects the fully austenitic solid-solution structure. Toughness holds down to cryogenic temperatures with no ductile-to-brittle transition.

The alloy is solid-solution strengthened with no precipitation-hardening response, so heat treatment cannot increase strength and cold work is the only route.

For acceptance purposes, corrosion testing carries far more information than tensile results. ASTM G28 Method A intergranular corrosion testing confirms that the solution anneal dissolved any intermetallic phases and that the quench was fast enough, and it is worth making mandatory on the order for severe service. A heat that passes tensile testing comfortably can still have intermetallic precipitation that a G28 test would catch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Hastelloy C276 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Round bar made from nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy UNS N10276 (Werkstoff 2.4819), containing 15-17% molybdenum, 14.5-16.5% chromium and 3-4.5% tungsten with nickel as the balance. Supplied solution annealed to ASTM B574, it is among the most universally corrosion-resistant materials available, with a pitting resistance equivalent near 68.
Residual control. C276 caps carbon at 0.010% and silicon at 0.08%, both extraordinarily low, which prevents carbide and intermetallic precipitation at grain boundaries during welding. That means the alloy can be used in the as-welded condition, while the original Hastelloy C required a post-weld solution treatment that is impractical for site fabrication. Removing that requirement is what made C276 the industry standard.
ASTM B574 covers rod and is the governing standard, with ASME SB-574 for pressure-retaining components and ASTM B564 for forgings. Dimensional tolerances come from the permissible variations within B574. The European material number is 2.4819 (NiMo16Cr15W) under DIN 17744. Hastelloy is a registered trade mark of Haynes International, so order against the UNS number.
Solution annealed, ASTM B574 requires at least 690 MPa tensile strength, 283 MPa 0.2% proof strength and 40% elongation. The alloy is not bought for strength, and for acceptance purposes ASTM G28 Method A corrosion testing tells you far more than the tensile results, since it confirms the solution anneal and quench were carried out properly.
For wet corrosion service, avoid prolonged exposure above roughly 650 C. Intermetallic phases precipitate above that and reduce corrosion resistance, and the damage does not show up in mechanical testing. Oxidation resistance extends considerably higher, but that is beside the point if the component returns to wet service afterwards, so the wet-service limit is the one that governs.
They are complementary rather than ranked. C276 carries more molybdenum at 15-17% and less chromium at 14.5-16.5%, which favours reducing conditions such as hydrochloric acid. C22 carries more chromium at 20-22.5% and less molybdenum at 12.5-14.5%, which favours oxidising conditions such as nitric acid and ferric chloride. Choose based on which side of the corrosion map the service sits.
Yes, and it is one of the alloy's main advantages. The very low carbon and silicon limits mean the material can be welded and placed in service as welded, with no post-weld solution treatment required, while retaining resistance to intergranular attack. Matching ERNiCrMo-4 filler is normal. Heat input should still be controlled to avoid intermetallic precipitation in the heat-affected zone.
Diameters typically run 6 mm to 250 mm, with larger sizes forged on enquiry. Mill lengths are 3 to 6 metres, random or cut to length. Bar is offered hot-rolled and pickled, peeled, turned, centreless ground or polished. For severe service, add ASTM G28 Method A testing to the order, since it is the direct check that the solution anneal was done correctly.
