Product Description for Duplex Stainless Steel 329 Round Bar

Duplex Stainless Steel 329 Round Bar (UNS S32900,EN 1.4460) is one of the earliest commercially established duplex (ferritic-austenitic) stainless steel grades, predating the modern standard-duplex family represented by 2205 (S31803/S32205). It is a chromium-nickel-molybdenum alloy without a guaranteed nitrogen addition, giving it a lower Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN, approximately 26–32) than 2205, and correspondingly more limited use in aggressive seawater or high-chloride service. Its higher permitted carbon content compared with later duplex grades reflects its earlier development and narrower application window.

329 is produced as hot-rolled or forged round bar, then solution annealed (typically in the range of approximately 950–1100°C) and water quenched to develop a balanced two-phase microstructure, typically 55–75% ferrite in the annealed condition. It is covered by ASTM A276 (general bar and shapes) and ASTM A479 (pressure-vessel bar), with EN 10088-3 as the corresponding European bar and forging standard. A distinguishing commercial characteristic of 329 is its formulation with optimized sulfide inclusion morphology for improved machinability relative to many other duplex grades, making it a practical choice where moderate corrosion resistance is combined with a requirement for extensive machining.

Typical applications include pump and compressor components, marine shafts, heat exchangers, chemical storage tanks, and general engineering parts operating in mildly to moderately corrosive, chloride-containing environments — but not in the more aggressive seawater or high-chloride-process conditions where 2205 or super duplex grades are specified. Design stress values for S32900 in recognized pressure-vessel codes are typically not extended above approximately 260°C, reflecting a susceptibility to embrittlement at moderate-to-high service temperatures with slow cooling. Purchasers should confirm the governing bar standard (A276 vs. A479), required delivery condition (solution annealed), and should not assume 329 is a drop-in substitute for 2205, since its lower guaranteed corrosion resistance is a substantive engineering distinction rather than a minor grade variation.

Common Applications of Duplex Stainless Steel 329 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

329 round bar is identified by UNS S32900, EN 1.4460, or the legacy AISI/ASTM “Type 329” designation, and by the Japanese SUS329J1 designation — buyers should take care not to confuse this with the visually similar SUS329J3L (which is the JIS equivalent of 2205, a different and higher-alloy grade). As with other duplex bar, the governing bar standard should be specified: ASTM A276 for general bar and shapes, or ASTM A479 (ASME SA-479) where boiler/pressure-vessel documentation and end hardness testing are required. EN 10088-3 is the corresponding European standard.

Because 329 predates the standard-duplex family represented by 2205, published mechanical and physical property data is less consistently available across independent producer sources than for 2205 — several physical properties (notably melting range and electrical resistivity) are not reliably published in the distributor literature reviewed for this content and should be confirmed directly with the supplying mill before being relied upon for design purposes. Bar is always supplied solution annealed and water quenched; no secondary hardening heat treatment applies. Dimensional tolerances follow the ordered finish class (hot-rolled/forged black bar vs. turned or bright bar) under EN 10060 or ASTM A484, and should be confirmed against the specific ordering standard referenced on the purchase order.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Alloy 329 Round Bar

Chromium is present at a notably higher level (23–28%) than in 2205 (21–23%), which on its own would suggest strong corrosion resistance; however, 329 does not carry a guaranteed nitrogen addition, and its molybdenum range (1.0–2.0%) is lower than 2205’s (2.5–3.5%). The net effect, captured in the PREN calculation, is a lower overall pitting resistance equivalent (approximately 26–32) than 2205 (approximately 34–36), despite the higher chromium content — illustrating why chromium content alone should not be used to infer corrosion performance across duplex grades. Nickel (2.5–5.0%) is present mainly to balance the ferrite/austenite ratio rather than to independently drive corrosion resistance.

The higher permitted carbon content (0.08% max, versus 0.03% max for 2205) is a legacy characteristic of this earlier-generation grade and makes 329 somewhat more prone to chromium carbide precipitation at grain/phase boundaries during welding or extended thermal exposure, which can locally reduce corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone compared with the very-low-carbon modern duplex grades. This grade is commercially known for optimized sulfide inclusion morphology, which improves machinability relative to many other duplex grades without a significant sacrifice in mechanical properties, making it a practical choice for parts requiring extensive machining. Phosphorus and sulfur are controlled to protect toughness and hot workability, consistent with standard duplex-grade practice.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Alloy 329 Round Bar

329’s guaranteed 450 MPa minimum yield strength gives it load-bearing capacity comparable to 2205 and roughly double that of standard austenitic stainless steels, supporting its use in shafts, pump components, and other moderately loaded mechanical parts. Elongation of approximately 20% minimum indicates adequate ductility for a high-strength duplex grade, though — as with all duplex stainless steels — the material work-hardens more than austenitic grades during cold forming and machining, which should be accounted for in tooling selection.

Toughness is high at room temperature but, as with other duplex grades, is sensitive to thermal history: 329 is documented as prone to embrittlement when exposed to moderate-to-high temperatures with slow cooling, and design stress values in recognized pressure codes are typically not extended above approximately 260°C for this grade. The proportion and orientation of ferrite in welds and base material can significantly affect toughness at sub-zero temperatures, so low-temperature service should be qualified by impact testing rather than assumed from room-temperature data. Hardness in the solution-annealed condition (≤260 HB typical) reflects a machinable, non-wear-resistant delivery condition consistent with this grade’s marketed advantage in machinability relative to other duplex alloys.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Duplex Stainless Steel 329 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Duplex Stainless Steel 329 is a ferritic-austenitic stainless steel grade designed to provide a combination of corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. Its duplex microstructure gives it properties that differ from conventional austenitic stainless steels. For industrial buyers, the important consideration is whether the grade meets the requirements of the intended service environment, including corrosion exposure, temperature, mechanical loading, and fabrication conditions. When purchasing 329 round bar, buyers should verify the exact grade designation, applicable material standard, chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions, and certification rather than selecting the material based only on the “329” designation.
AISI 329 is associated with duplex stainless steel applications where a combination of corrosion resistance and mechanical strength is required. Depending on the applicable specification and material condition, duplex stainless steel can be used for industrial components exposed to demanding environments. Potential applications include chemical processing equipment, oil and gas components, marine equipment, pumps, valves, shafts, and other engineered parts. However, the exact suitability of a 329 round bar depends on the specified standard and service conditions. Buyers should verify the grade's chemical composition, mechanical properties, corrosion requirements, temperature, and fabrication requirements before selecting it for a project.
The designation for Duplex Stainless Steel 329 should be verified against the specific material standard and product specification because numerical grade names can be used differently across standards. Depending on the material being sourced, stainless steel may be identified using designations such as AISI, UNS, EN/Werkstoff, ASTM, or other national standards. Buyers should not assume that two grades with similar numbers are exact equivalents. When ordering Duplex 329 round bar, provide the designation shown on your drawing, specification, or material requirement. The supplier can then verify the applicable standard, chemical composition, mechanical properties, and any permitted equivalent designation.
To order Duplex 329 round bars, provide the supplier with as much technical information as possible. The enquiry should include the grade designation, applicable standard, diameter, length, quantity, tolerance, surface condition, material condition, certification requirements, and delivery location. If the material is required for a specific component, a drawing or project specification can also help prevent errors. Buyers should specify whether an MTC, PMI report, third-party inspection, or other documentation is required. Euro Steel Bars can review the requirement and assist with sourcing according to the specified grade, dimensions, documentation, quantity, and delivery requirements.
Yes. Duplex stainless steel is generally magnetic because its microstructure contains a ferritic phase along with an austenitic phase. This differs from common austenitic stainless steels such as 304 and 316, which are generally non-magnetic in their annealed condition. The magnetic response of duplex steel is therefore a normal characteristic and does not by itself indicate a material defect. However, a magnet test should not be used as the primary method of confirming a Duplex 329 round bar. Grade verification should be based on the material certificate, chemical composition, heat number, and applicable inspection requirements.
The weight of a stainless steel round bar is determined mainly by its diameter, length, and material density. Duplex and conventional stainless steels have relatively similar densities, so a Duplex 329 round bar of the same dimensions will generally have a similar weight to a comparable 304 or 316 round bar. The exact difference depends on the alloy composition and applicable material specification. For purchasing, freight, and machining calculations, buyers should use the actual density or theoretical weight specified for the material. The diameter and length usually have a much greater effect on total bar weight than the difference between stainless steel grades.
Yes. Duplex stainless steel is a recyclable metal and can be recovered through established stainless steel recycling processes. Its alloying elements can be reclaimed and reused in the production of stainless steel and other steel products. However, recyclability does not remove the material requirements for a new industrial component. A Duplex 329 round bar supplied for a project must still meet the required chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions, material standard, and certification requirements. Buyers should therefore distinguish between the environmental recyclability of stainless steel and the traceability and certification requirements that apply when purchasing certified material for industrial applications.
Whether Duplex Stainless Steel 329 justifies its cost depends on the application and required performance, rather than material price alone. Duplex stainless steels can provide a useful combination of strength and corrosion resistance, which may offer advantages where conventional stainless grades do not meet the service requirements. In some designs, higher strength can also influence material thickness or component design, although this must be established through engineering calculations. Buyers should compare the complete requirement, including service life, corrosion exposure, mechanical loading, fabrication, maintenance, certification, and initial material cost. The appropriate grade is the one that meets the project's documented technical requirements.
Duplex stainless steel provides high strength and corrosion resistance, but it also requires careful control during fabrication, welding, heat treatment, and machining. Incorrect welding heat input or unsuitable thermal exposure can affect the balance between the ferritic and austenitic phases and may reduce the required properties. Its higher strength can also make machining and forming more demanding than some conventional austenitic grades. Material availability and cost can vary depending on the grade and required specification. For buyers, these factors should be considered alongside corrosion resistance, mechanical requirements, fabrication methods, certification, and the overall project specification.
There is no universal “better” grade because Duplex 329 and 316 stainless steel are selected for different service and design requirements. Duplex stainless steel generally provides higher mechanical strength and a ferritic-austenitic microstructure, while 316 is a widely used austenitic grade with good corrosion resistance and established fabrication characteristics. The appropriate choice depends on factors such as chloride exposure, mechanical loading, temperature, welding, machining, corrosion requirements, applicable standards, and project cost. Buyers should compare the actual certified properties of the specified grades rather than relying only on generic grade comparisons. The final selection should follow the project's engineering requirements.
