Product Description for Duplex Stainless Steel 2404 Round Bar

Duplex Stainless Steel 2404 Round Bar is a high-strength lean duplex bar made to UNS S82441, known in Europe as 1.4662 (X2CrNiMnMoCuN24-4-3-2). It contains about 23–25% chromium, 3.0–4.5% nickel, 2.5–4.0% manganese, 1.0–2.0% molybdenum and 0.20–0.30% nitrogen.

The grade was developed to give corrosion resistance close to that of 2205 duplex in many environments while using less nickel and molybdenum. Its pitting resistance equivalent is usually around 33–34, which is higher than 316L and 2304.

Strength is a major advantage. The yield strength of annealed 2404 is higher than that of 2304 and 2205, which allows weight savings in structural and pressure parts. The duplex structure also gives good resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking.

Duplex 2404 bar is certified as UNS S82441 to ASTM A479 or as 1.4662 to EN 10088-3, solution annealed. Most 2404 bar is hot rolled or forged, then peeled or turned to remove surface scale. The grade is magnetic and cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Welding is carried out with duplex filler metals and controlled heat input.

Common uses include shafts, rebar and structural parts, bolts and fasteners, pump and valve parts, water and desalination equipment, pulp and paper parts, and storage tank components. It is a cost-effective choice where 316L is not strong or corrosion resistant enough, and full 2205 is more than needed. Availability in bar form is narrower than for 2205, so buyers should check sizes early. It is also a good choice for shafts and fasteners where strength and corrosion resistance are both needed. Shipbuilders and offshore fabricators use 2404 for shafts, pump parts and fixings where they want 2205-type corrosion resistance with a lower alloy surcharge.

Common Applications of Duplex Stainless Steel 2404 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Duplex 2404 Round Bar is supplied to ASTM A479 / A479M with general requirements from ASTM A484, or to EN 10088-3 as 1.4662 in the solution-annealed condition. Because the grade is newer than 2205, buyers should confirm the edition of the standard and the available size range with the mill.

Bars are hot rolled or forged and then solution annealed, usually at about 1000–1100°C, followed by rapid cooling. This gives a balanced ferrite-austenite structure. Like other duplex grades, 2404 is not hardened by heat treatment, and its high strength comes from nitrogen and a fine two-phase structure.

Long exposure in the range of about 300–950°C can form brittle phases and reduce corrosion resistance. Tests such as ASTM A923, ferrite measurement and impact testing can be ordered to confirm correct heat treatment.

Physical values for 2404 are reference data taken from producer literature. The material is magnetic. Standard inspection includes heat analysis, tensile, hardness and dimensional checks. For offshore orders, ultrasonic testing, PMI and third-party witnessing of 2404 bar can be arranged. For 2404, size tolerances follow ASTM A484, EN 10060 or EN 10278, depending on finish and standard.

Duplex 2404 is a newer grade, so buyers should confirm that the design code or client specification accepts UNS S82441 before ordering. Bars are solution annealed at about 1020–1100°C and water quenched. For offshore or pressure service, specify ferrite content and Charpy impact tests, and ask for UT on larger diameters.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Duplex 2404 Round Bar

The table shows the ASTM limits for UNS S82441. The EN grade 1.4662 has closely matching limits in EN 10088-3.

Chromium at 23–25% and molybdenum at 1.0–2.0% provide the main corrosion resistance. Nitrogen at 0.20–0.30% adds strongly to pitting resistance and to strength. Together these give a PREN of about 33–34, close to 2205 and well above 316L and 2304.

Manganese at 2.5–4.0% and nickel at 3.0–4.5% stabilise the austenite phase. Manganese also raises nitrogen solubility, which allows the high nitrogen level. Using manganese this way reduces the need for costly nickel.

Carbon is held at 0.030% maximum to prevent carbide precipitation. Sulfur is kept very low, at 0.005% maximum, to help hot workability and pitting resistance. Copper adds some resistance in reducing acids. On 2404 certificates, confirm that nitrogen, molybdenum and copper are all within range. The low sulfur limit of 0.005% helps hot workability and pitting resistance. When comparing mill certificates, check nitrogen and molybdenum together, because both drive the PREN.

Manganese at 2.5–4.0% also raises nitrogen solubility, which lets the steel hold enough nitrogen for its high strength. Nickel at 3.0–4.5% is lower than in 2205, which is where the cost saving comes from.

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Duplex 2404 Round Bar

The values shown are minimum requirements for UNS S82441 bars in the solution-annealed condition. Requirements can vary with section size and edition of the standard, so the ordered standard should always be checked. EN 10088-3 gives its own limits for 1.4662.

The yield strength of at least 480 MPa is among the highest of the lean duplex grades and is well above that of 316L. This allows lighter parts and higher design stresses. Ductility remains good, with elongation of at least 25%.

Toughness is good at room temperature and moderately low temperatures when the bar is correctly solution annealed. The grade is not meant for cryogenic use. For critical service, impact tests can be added. Use minimum standard values for design and confirm actual results on the mill certificate. ASTM A479 sets higher minimums for bars under 11 mm, because thin sections cool faster and keep a finer structure. Make sure the certificate matches the right size band. For shafts, the high yield strength allows smaller diameters than 2205 at the same load, but check fatigue and deflection limits.

Hardness is limited to 290 HB maximum in ASTM A479, which also helps meet sour-service hardness rules where they apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Duplex Stainless Steel 2404 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Duplex stainless steel 2404 is designed to provide a balance of corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and resistance to chloride-related corrosion. Compared with conventional austenitic stainless steels, duplex 2404 can offer higher strength, while its alloy composition provides good resistance in demanding industrial environments. It may be considered for applications where buyers need more performance than standard grades but do not necessarily require a higher-alloy super duplex grade. The correct choice depends on the service environment, temperature, mechanical requirements, applicable specification, and fabrication conditions. Always verify the required grade and material standard before procurement.
The price of Duplex Stainless Steel 2404 Round Bar varies according to diameter, length, quantity, material condition, specification, certification, surface finish, and delivery location. Alloying element prices and overall market conditions can also affect the quotation. For this reason, a fixed price range may not accurately represent the cost of your required material. When requesting a quotation, provide the required size, quantity, applicable ASTM/ASME or EN specification, certification requirements, and destination. Euro Steel Bars can then source and quote the material according to your actual technical and commercial requirements.
The required Duplex 2404 round bar size depends on the component design, load requirements, machining allowance, manufacturing process, and applicable engineering standard. Diameter and length should therefore be selected from the project's drawings or engineering specifications rather than simply choosing a commonly available size. Buyers should also consider whether the bar will be machined, forged, or used directly as supplied. When requesting material, specify the 2404 grade, diameter, required length, quantity, tolerance, surface condition, and applicable standard. If the final component dimensions are known, cut-to-size supply may also help reduce material preparation work.
When sourcing Duplex 2404 round bars, choose a supplier that can meet your grade, dimensions, specification, certification, quantity, and delivery requirements. Quality is not only about the physical appearance of the bar. Buyers should verify the material designation, applicable standard, heat number and traceability, chemical composition, mechanical properties, and Mill Test Certificate (MTC) where required. Euro Steel Bars supplies duplex and super duplex round bars for industrial buyers and can assist with sourcing according to project specifications. Providing the complete material requirement with your enquiry helps ensure that the quoted product matches your application and documentation needs.
Yes. Duplex stainless steel is a recyclable engineering material and can be recovered and reused through established stainless steel recycling processes. Its alloying elements, including chromium and nickel where present, have value in the recycling stream. Recycling does not mean that used material can automatically be substituted for certified new material in a critical application. For industrial procurement, the required round bar still needs to meet the specified grade, chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions, and material standard. Buyers should therefore distinguish between the recyclability of stainless steel as a material and the certification requirements for newly supplied round bars.
There is no single weight capacity for a Duplex 2404 round bar. The allowable load depends on the bar diameter, unsupported length, loading direction, temperature, mounting conditions, component geometry, and design safety factors. Engineers may also need to consider tensile strength, yield strength, buckling, fatigue, and other applicable design criteria. A larger diameter does not automatically provide a specific load rating without considering the complete component design. For structural or pressure-related applications, the required load should be calculated by a qualified engineer according to the applicable design code and service conditions before selecting the round bar.
The suitable service temperature for Duplex 2404 depends on the material condition, application, design code, exposure time, and mechanical and corrosion requirements. Duplex stainless steels generally require more careful temperature control than conventional austenitic stainless steels because prolonged exposure to certain elevated temperatures can affect their phase balance and toughness. Therefore, a simple maximum temperature should not be used for every application. Buyers should provide the expected operating temperature and service conditions when sourcing the material. For pressure, process, or safety-critical applications, the permitted temperature range should be confirmed against the applicable material specification and design code.
Duplex stainless steel generally requires routine maintenance rather than complex special treatment, particularly when the correct grade has been selected for the service environment. Regular cleaning can help remove deposits, chlorides, dirt, and contaminants that may contribute to surface corrosion. The material should also be protected from contamination by carbon steel during handling, fabrication, and storage where applicable. For industrial equipment, maintenance procedures should consider the actual operating environment, including seawater, chemicals, temperature, and process contaminants. Following the equipment manufacturer's maintenance procedure and using suitable cleaning methods can help maintain the corrosion-resistant surface of the duplex stainless steel.
Duplex stainless steel offers high strength and corrosion resistance, but there are important considerations when selecting it. Welding, heat input, fabrication, and heat treatment require proper control because the duplex microstructure needs to be maintained within the required balance. Its higher strength can also make machining and forming more demanding than some conventional austenitic stainless steels. In addition, material cost can be higher than common stainless grades, depending on the alloy and market conditions. These factors do not make duplex unsuitable; they mean buyers should select the grade based on the application, fabrication process, specification, and total project requirements.
Yes, duplex stainless steel generally provides higher yield strength and tensile strength than common austenitic stainless steels such as 304 and 316. This higher strength comes from its two-phase ferritic-austenitic microstructure and can be useful for components exposed to significant mechanical loads. However, “stronger” does not mean it is automatically the right material for every application. Engineers must also consider corrosion resistance, toughness, weldability, temperature, fabrication requirements, and applicable design standards. When purchasing Duplex 2404 round bars, buyers should verify the required mechanical properties and material specification rather than selecting the material based on strength alone.
