Product Description for Inconel 600 Round Bar

Inconel 600 is a nickel-chromium alloy, UNS N06600 and Werkstoff 2.4816. Material is furnished to ASTM B166, the standard covering nickel-chromium-iron alloy rod, bar and wire, with ASME SB-166 applying to pressure equipment and ASTM B564 to forgings.

The composition is nickel 72% minimum with 14-17% chromium and 6-10% iron. Nickel at that level carries the alloy’s headline property: near immunity to chloride stress corrosion cracking, the failure mode that limits austenitic stainless steels in warm chloride service. Chromium adds oxidation resistance and handles sulphur-bearing and oxidising conditions.

It also resists dry chlorine and hydrogen chloride to around 550 C, and performs well in caustic solutions including caustic soda at concentration.

The alloy is solid-solution strengthened only, with no precipitation hardening, so it cannot be heat treated to higher strength. Bar is supplied annealed or hot-finished, and strength comes from cold work where more is needed.

Oxidation resistance extends to roughly 1090 C, and the alloy retains useful strength and structural stability across the whole range from cryogenic temperatures upward.

Two limits decide where it goes. There is no molybdenum, so it is not a pitting-resistant grade and performs poorly in oxidising chloride solutions such as ferric chloride, where Alloy 625 or a Hastelloy grade is needed. And prolonged exposure between roughly 540 C and 760 C can sensitise the material through chromium carbide precipitation.

Sizes run 6 mm to 250 mm, either random or cut to length. The alloy is non-magnetic at room temperature.

Typical work is furnace and heat-treatment fixtures, chemical process hardware, nuclear steam generator components, chloride and caustic service parts, and machined fittings for high-temperature systems.

Common Applications of Inconel 600 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Order to ASTM B166 under UNS N06600, with ASME SB-166 invoked for pressure-retaining components and ASTM B564 covering forgings. Dimensional tolerance, straightness and surface condition come from the permissible variations tables within B166 itself, not from ASTM A484 or A29 which cover stainless and alloy steel respectively.

Delivery is annealed or hot-finished. The alloy is solid-solution strengthened with no precipitation hardening available, so heat treatment cannot raise strength. Cold work is the only route, and it is reversed by annealing.

Two limitations decide where the alloy is used. It has essentially no molybdenum, so it is not a pitting-resistant grade and performs poorly in oxidising chloride solutions such as ferric chloride, where Alloy 625 or a Hastelloy grade is required instead. And prolonged exposure between roughly 540 C and 760 C can sensitise the material through chromium carbide precipitation, which affects resistance to intergranular attack in wet service afterwards.

Where it excels is chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance, caustic service, dry chlorine and hydrogen chloride to around 550 C, and high-temperature oxidation.

Machining behaves like most solid-solution nickel alloys: the material work hardens rapidly, so rigid setups, sharp tooling, positive feeds and slower speeds are needed. Welding uses matching or over-alloyed nickel-base filler.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Alloy 600 Round Bar

Nickel at 72% minimum is the defining element and it is specified as a floor rather than a range, with iron and chromium making up the balance. At that level the alloy is effectively immune to chloride stress corrosion cracking, which is the mechanism that most often finishes austenitic stainless steels in warm chloride service. High nickel also gives excellent resistance in caustic solutions and provides structural stability from cryogenic temperatures right through to around 1090 C.

Chromium at 14.00-17.00% supplies oxidation resistance at high temperature and handles oxidising and sulphur-bearing conditions that attack pure nickel. It forms the protective oxide that lets the alloy work in furnace atmospheres.

Iron at 6.00-10.00% is a deliberate range rather than a residual. It reduces cost against a higher-nickel alloy while keeping the properties that matter.

Carbon is permitted to 0.15%, high by modern standards, and it is the reason prolonged exposure between roughly 540 C and 760 C can sensitise the material through chromium carbide precipitation.

Copper is capped at 0.50%, manganese at 1.00% and silicon at 0.50%. Sulphur is held tight at 0.015%, since sulphur is particularly damaging to hot workability and weldability in nickel alloys.

Note that there is no molybdenum, which is why the alloy is not pitting resistant.

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Alloy 600 Round Bar

ASTM B166 sets these for annealed UNS N06600 bar, all minima except hardness, which ASTM B166 caps at 184 HB. Testing follows ASTM E8 or ASTM A370. Hot-finished material carries slightly different requirements from annealed, so the condition should be stated on the order.

Strength is moderate and is not the reason anyone specifies this alloy. At 550 MPa minimum tensile and 240 MPa minimum proof strength it sits close to annealed 304 stainless. What sets it apart is corrosion behaviour and the ability to hold structural stability over an exceptionally wide temperature range.

The alloy is solid-solution strengthened only. There is no precipitation-hardening response, so heat treatment cannot increase strength, and any additional strength has to come from cold work, which reduces ductility and is removed by subsequent annealing.

Ductility is high at 30% minimum elongation, and toughness remains good down to cryogenic temperatures because the structure is austenitic with no ductile-to-brittle transition.

For elevated-temperature design, creep and stress-rupture data govern rather than these room-temperature figures. Strength falls steadily above about 600 C, and the practical limit of roughly 1090 C is set by oxidation rather than by load-bearing capability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Inconel 600 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Round bar made from nickel-chromium alloy UNS N06600 (Werkstoff 2.4816), containing 72% minimum nickel with 14-17% chromium and 6-10% iron. Supplied annealed or hot-finished to ASTM B166, it is chosen for near immunity to chloride stress corrosion cracking, resistance to caustic and dry chlorine, and oxidation resistance to around 1090 C.
ASTM B166 covers nickel-chromium-iron alloy rod, bar and wire, and is the governing standard for bar. ASME SB-166 applies where the material forms part of pressure equipment, and ASTM B564 covers forgings. Dimensional tolerances come from the permissible variations tables within B166 itself, rather than from ASTM A484 or A29 which apply to stainless and alloy steel.
UNS N06600 in the USA, Werkstoff 2.4816 (NiCr15Fe) in Europe under DIN 17742 and related specifications, and NA 14 under BS 3076 in the United Kingdom. Inconel is a registered trade mark of Special Metals Corporation, and the alloy is also sold as Alloy 600 by other producers, so ordering against the UNS number avoids any ambiguity.
Annealed, ASTM B166 requires at least 550 MPa tensile strength (80 ksi), 240 MPa 0.2% proof strength (35 ksi) and 30% elongation, with hardness capped at 184 HB. That is close to annealed 304 stainless, so the alloy is not bought for strength. Its value lies in corrosion resistance and stability across an exceptionally wide temperature range.
Because of the nickel content. Chloride stress corrosion cracking susceptibility falls sharply as nickel rises above roughly 45%, and at 72% minimum the alloy is effectively immune. Austenitic stainless steels such as 304 and 316 carry only 8-14% nickel, which puts them in the worst part of the susceptibility curve and is why they crack in warm chloride service.
In oxidising chloride solutions such as ferric chloride, and anywhere pitting or crevice corrosion is the controlling mechanism. The alloy contains no molybdenum, so it has no meaningful pitting resistance, and Alloy 625 or a Hastelloy C grade should be specified instead. Also avoid prolonged exposure between roughly 540 C and 760 C where wet corrosion follows, since chromium carbide precipitation can sensitise the material.
No. The alloy is solid-solution strengthened only, with no precipitation-hardening response, so no heat treatment will raise its strength. Annealing softens it and restores ductility. Higher strength can only be obtained by cold working, which reduces elongation and is removed entirely by any subsequent anneal. Where a high-strength nickel alloy is needed, Inconel 718 is the usual alternative.
Diameters typically run 6 mm to 250 mm, with larger sizes forged on enquiry. Mill lengths are 3 to 6 metres, random or cut to length. Bar is offered hot-rolled and pickled, peeled, turned, centreless ground or polished. State whether you need annealed or hot-finished material, since the two carry different mechanical requirements under ASTM B166.
