Product Description for Stainless Steel 416Se Round Bar
Stainless Steel 416Se Round Bar is a free-machining martensitic stainless bar made to UNS S41623. It contains 12–14% chromium, up to 0.15% carbon and at least 0.15% selenium. The selenium forms small selenide particles that break chips cleanly during cutting, which gives very good machinability in automatic lathes and CNC machines.
The grade is the selenium-bearing version of Type 416. Selenide inclusions are more rounded than the sulfide inclusions found in standard 416. Because of this, 416Se is often chosen when a finer machined surface finish, better cold-heading behaviour or slightly better transverse properties are wanted.
Bars are produced to ASTM A582 / A582M, the American standard for free-machining stainless steel bars. They are supplied annealed for best machinability, or hardened and tempered when higher strength is needed. The alloy can be hardened by heat treatment, and it is magnetic in all conditions.
Corrosion resistance is moderate. It is suitable for mild atmospheres, fresh water, steam, petroleum products and many foods, but it is lower than non-free-machining 410 because of the selenide particles. The grade is not suited to marine or chloride service.
Common parts include valve trim, pump shafts, screws, bolts, nuts, gears, pinions, motor shafts and precision turned components made in high volumes. No direct European or Japanese standard grade with selenium has been identified, so buyers outside the USA should order to ASTM A582 or agree the chemistry directly with the mill. Because 416Se machines so easily, it can cut cycle times on automatic lathes compared with non-free-machining 410.
Common Applications of Stainless Steel 416Se Round Bar
➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.
➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.
➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.
➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Technical Specifications
Get the key technical specifications for Stainless Steel 416Se Round Bar
Stainless Steel 416Se Round Bar is ordered to ASTM A582 / A582M, which covers free-machining stainless bars. General requirements such as dimensional tolerances, straightness, surface condition and marking come from ASTM A484 / A484M.
ASTM A582 controls these bars mainly by hardness rather than by tensile tests. The annealed condition is the usual choice for machining. Harder tempered conditions can be ordered where higher strength is needed straight from the bar. The purchase order should state the condition and hardness range required.
Bars are hot rolled and annealed, then often cold drawn, turned or centreless ground to give close tolerances for automatic lathe feeding. Ground bars are common for precision work. Annealing is usually carried out by slow cooling from about 815–900°C. Hardening is done from about 925–1010°C followed by oil or air quenching and tempering.
The physical values listed for 416Se are reference data for heat-transfer and expansion calculations. The grade is magnetic. Each 416Se heat is checked for selenium content, hardness and size before dispatch. Because selenium affects corrosion behaviour, parts should be passivated after machining using a method suitable for free-machining grades.
Selenium-bearing bar is produced by fewer mills than sulfur-bearing 416, so lead times can be longer and minimum order quantities higher. Confirm stock sizes early, and state whether the bar is required in Condition A (annealed) or Condition T (hardened and tempered).

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for SS 416Se Round Bar
The composition limits shown are those of UNS S41623 in ASTM A582. The main difference from Type 416 is that selenium (0.15% minimum) replaces most of the sulfur used for free machining. Sulfur is held to 0.060% maximum.
Chromium at 12–14% gives the passive film that provides basic resistance to rust, steam, fresh water and mild chemicals. Carbon up to 0.15% allows the steel to form martensite on quenching, so the bar can be hardened and tempered to higher strength.
Selenium forms fine selenide particles. These act as chip breakers and lubricants at the tool edge. This improves tool life, cutting speed and surface finish. Selenides tend to be more rounded than sulfides, so they have a smaller effect on transverse ductility and cold forming.
In 416Se, manganese also helps form the inclusions that break chips, while silicon deoxidises the melt. Phosphorus is set higher than in standard grades to help machinability. The free-machining additions reduce corrosion resistance and weldability compared with Type 410. For this reason welding is not normally recommended. Always check the heat analysis on the certificate against the ASTM A582 limits. Buyers who only need good machining, not the best surface finish, can often use standard 416 with sulfur, which is more widely stocked.

Mechanical Properties
Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of SS 416Se Round Bar
ASTM A582 sets hardness as the main acceptance test for free-machining stainless bars. In the annealed condition the maximum hardness is 262 HB. Tensile, yield and elongation values in the table are reference results for annealed bar and are given for guidance only. They are not mandatory limits.
The annealed condition gives the best machinability and is the standard supply condition for automatic lathe work. When higher strength is needed, the bar can be hardened by heating to about 925–1010°C, quenching in oil or air and tempering. The tempering temperature sets the final balance between hardness and toughness.
Tempering in the range of about 400–580°C should be avoided because it lowers impact toughness and corrosion resistance in martensitic stainless steels. Buyers who need a hardened condition should order the specific ASTM A582 condition or a hardness range, and check it on the mill certificate. Mechanical properties can vary with bar size and processing route. If parts will be thread-rolled or cold-headed after machining, specify the annealed condition, because the extra ductility reduces cracking at the thread roots.
For fasteners and valve stems, Condition T gives higher strength without extra heat treatment at the machine shop, which saves a process step.
