Product Description for Stainless Steel 310 Round Bar

Stainless Steel 310 Round Bar carries the UNS number S31000 and the material number 1.4845. Bar is supplied to ASTM A276 / A276M; tolerances, straightness and finish come from ASTM A484 / A484M. JIS and GB/T list an equivalent grade. EN and KS do not.

The grade contains 24-26% chromium and 19-22% nickel, the highest alloy content of the common heat-resisting austenitic bars, with carbon permitted to 0.25%. The high chromium forms a stable protective scale in continuous service to approximately 1150 C, and the high nickel content resists carburisation and nitriding while maintaining austenitic structure and toughness.

Bar leaves the mill in the solution annealed (Condition A, +AT) condition. Depending on the tolerance and surface a job needs, it can be hot finished, cold drawn, peeled, rough or smooth turned, centreless ground or polished. Diameters from 3 mm to 500 mm are usual, with larger sizes forged to order, in random 3 to 6 m lengths or cut to length. The grade cannot be hardened by heat treatment; higher strength is obtained only through cold working.

Work done in this grade includes furnace rolls, retorts, radiant tube parts and heat-treatment fixtures, mostly for the heat treatment, cement, incineration, petrochemical and high-temperature processing industries. Material normally ships against an EN 10204 3.1 certificate showing heat analysis, mechanical results and delivery condition. In the annealed condition the steel is non-magnetic, though cold work can leave it slightly magnetic. Density is around 7.90 g/cm3 and the modulus of elasticity about 200 GPa. Third party inspection, positive material identification and non-destructive examination can be added at order stage.

Common Applications of Stainless Steel 310 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Orders are normally placed to ASTM A276 / A276M, with ASTM A484 / A484M carrying the dimensional side. European practice specifies the same steel to EN as No direct equivalent identified; 1.4845 (X8CrNi25-21) is nearest, with lower carbon. Whichever it is, the standard, the condition and any extra testing belong on the purchase order.

Solution annealing is carried out at approximately 1040-1150 C followed by rapid cooling. The grade is not hardenable by heat treatment.

Bar reaches its finish two ways: hot rolling or forging followed by heat treatment and pickling, or a further cold operation such as drawing, peeling, turning or grinding. Tolerances on diameter, out of round, straightness and length depend on both size and finish class.

Continuous service in air is generally rated to about 1150 C and intermittent service to about 1035 C, the lower cyclic figure reflecting scale spalling under thermal shock.

Treat the physical properties as typical producer figures; the standard does not set them. Mechanical testing follows ASTM A370 and everything tested appears on the certificate. End condition, chamfering, marking and packing are settled at order stage along with the length tolerance.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for SS 310 Round Bar

The 25/20 chromium-nickel balance is what distinguishes the grade. Chromium builds the protective oxide, and the very high nickel content stabilises austenite at temperature and resists carbon pickup in carburising atmospheres.

Chromium runs 24.00 to 26.00% here, and it is what makes the steel stainless: it builds the passive oxide film that resists attack. Nickel at 19.00 to 22.00% stabilises the structure and improves ductility and toughness. Beyond those, the standard controls only carbon, manganese, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, chromium and nickel; nothing else is specified. Carbon is capped at 0.25%.

Manganese and silicon go in as deoxidisers during melting and add a little strength. Phosphorus and sulphur are residuals, held low because they hurt hot working, welding and corrosion resistance; sulphur is raised only when a free machining variant is wanted.

Limits differ a little between the ASTM, EN, JIS, GB/T and KS versions. That usually makes no practical difference, but it can in aggressive or high temperature duty, which is why the certified heat analysis is worth reading against the ordered specification. Chemical analysis is carried out to ASTM A751. Where the composition table shows no limit for an element, the standard sets no requirement and the element need not be determined or reported.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of SS 310 Round Bar

Room-temperature minima of 515 MPa tensile and 205 MPa yield apply. For furnace components, creep and rupture data at service temperature govern design rather than these ambient values.

The figures apply to solution annealed bar and are checked by tensile testing to ASTM A370 at room temperature. Cold finished bar work hardens while it is drawn or ground, so what arrives is often stronger than the minimum and less ductile than it. Toughness holds up to cryogenic temperatures, with no ductile to brittle transition.

For design, use the specified minima of the standard and condition ordered and take the real numbers from the mill certificate. Section size matters too, since diameter affects cooling rate during heat treatment and how much hot or cold work the bar has seen.

In selection terms, moderate strength combined with very high ductility and toughness favours components that must be formed, welded or extensively machined rather than carry high stress in thin sections. Where greater strength is needed at similar corrosion resistance, cold-worked bar, a duplex grade or a precipitation-hardening grade is normally evaluated instead. Machinability is moderate, and work hardening during cutting should be managed with sharp tooling, positive feed and rigid setups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Stainless Steel 310 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
It is round bar in austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel grade 310, which carries the UNS number S31000 and the material number 1.4845. Bar is made to ASTM A276 / A276M and supplied in the solution annealed (Condition A, +AT) condition. The grade goes into furnace rolls, retorts, radiant tube parts and heat-treatment fixtures for the heat treatment, cement, incineration, petrochemical and high-temperature processing industries, and can be had hot finished, cold drawn, peeled, turned, ground or polished depending on the tolerance and surface a part needs.
The material standard is ASTM A276 / A276M, which fixes chemistry, mechanical properties and heat treatment condition. Dimensions, straightness and surface come from ASTM A484 / A484M. In Europe the same steel is specified to EN as No direct equivalent identified; 1.4845 (X8CrNi25-21) is nearest, with lower carbon. Testing follows ASTM A370 and certification is normally EN 10204 3.1. Name the standard and the condition on the order.
Recognised equivalents are JIS G4311: SUH310; GB/T 1221: 25Cr25Ni20 (S31020). Where a national standard has no entry for the grade, do not assume a substitute; composition limits vary between standards. On code work, have the design authority confirm any equivalence against the actual heat analysis.
Diameters between 3 mm and 500 mm are normal, and larger sections are forged to order. Cold finished bar is usually 3 mm to 100 mm; hot finished and forged bar 16 mm to 500 mm. Lengths are random 3 to 6 m as standard, with cut lengths available. Tolerances on diameter, straightness and length follow ASTM A484 / A484M or whatever is agreed.
The specified values are Tensile Strength (Condition A, hot-finished) 515 (min) MPa; Yield Strength 0.2% (Condition A, hot-finished) 205 (min) MPa; Elongation in 50 mm (Condition A, hot-finished) 40 (min) %; Reduction of Area (Condition A, hot-finished) 50 (min) %. They relate to the solution annealed (Condition A, +AT) condition and are proved by testing to ASTM A370. Because diameter, finish and heat treatment all move the numbers, design against the minima of the ordered standard and read the certificate for what the heat achieved.
The main alloying elements are C 0.25% max, Cr 24.00-26.00%, Ni 19.00-22.00%, with manganese, silicon, phosphorus and sulphur held to the limits of the governing standard. The 25/20 chromium-nickel balance is what distinguishes the grade. Limits move slightly between the ASTM, EN, JIS and GB/T versions, so check the certified heat analysis against whichever was ordered.
Yes. Bar can go out in random mill lengths, in fixed or cut lengths to an agreed tolerance, or machined to drawing. Finishes cover hot finished and pickled, cold drawn, peeled, rough and smooth turned, centreless ground and polished. Bright and ground bar holds tighter diameter tolerance and gives a better surface for precision machining, while hot finished bar costs less for general fabrication. End condition, chamfering, marking and packing can also be specified.
Continuous service in air is generally rated to approximately 1150 C, with intermittent or cyclic service limited to around 1035 C. The lower cyclic figure exists because repeated heating and cooling causes oxide scale to crack and spall. The grade also resists carburising and nitriding atmospheres well thanks to its 19-22% nickel content. Sulphur-bearing gases are the main limitation, since nickel-rich alloys are vulnerable to sulphidation attack.
