Product Description for Stainless Steel 430F Round Bar

Type 430F (UNS S43020) is the free-machining version of ferritic Type 430, and bar is supplied to ASTM A582 / A582M, the standard covering free-machining stainless steel bars. Dimensional and surface requirements follow ASTM A484 / A484M, and European practice specifies the grade as 1.4104 to EN 10088-3.

The composition is 16-18% chromium with a deliberate sulphur addition of 0.15% minimum. That sulphur forms manganese sulphide inclusions which break the chip during cutting, and it is why the grade machines far faster and with better surface finish and tool life than standard 430. Some producers add up to 0.60% molybdenum, which the standard permits.

The trade is corrosion resistance. Sulphide inclusions are sites where pitting starts, so 430F is meaningfully less corrosion resistant than plain 430 and is not a marine or chemical grade. It suits mildly corrosive and indoor atmospheric service.

Bar is supplied annealed at roughly 760-830 C. It is ferritic, so it stays magnetic in every condition and will not respond to hardening heat treatment. Weldability is poor because of the sulphur, and welded construction is normally avoided.

Sizes span 6 mm to 150 mm, mostly cold-finished by drawing, turning or centreless grinding for the close tolerances that automatic machining demands. Demand concentrates in the smaller sizes, since that is where automatic lathe work sits.

Where free machining is wanted with better corrosion resistance, austenitic grade 303 is the usual alternative, though it is non-magnetic and behaves quite differently under the tool.

The usual work is high-volume turned parts: shafts, spindles, nozzles, valve components, fittings, fasteners, solenoid and instrument parts.

Common Applications of Stainless Steel 430F Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Order to ASTM A582 / A582M, which covers free-machining stainless steel bars and sets composition and condition for Type 430F. Size tolerance, straightness and finish are governed by ASTM A484 / A484M. European supply is to EN 10088-3 as 1.4104 (X14CrMoS17).

The delivery condition is annealed, normally 760-830 C followed by air or slow cooling. Being ferritic, the grade does not transform on cooling, so quench hardening achieves nothing and cold work is the only route to higher strength.

Most 430F is supplied cold-finished, because the whole point of the grade is automatic machining and that requires the close diameter tolerance and consistent surface a drawn, turned or ground bar provides. Cold-finished bar also machines more predictably than hot-rolled.

Two limitations should be settled before specifying. Corrosion resistance is below that of plain 430, since the manganese sulphide inclusions that make the grade machinable are also preferential pitting sites, so it belongs in mild atmospheric and indoor service rather than marine or chemical duty. Weldability is poor for the same reason, and welded construction is normally avoided in favour of machined or mechanically assembled parts.

Where free machining is wanted with better corrosion resistance, the austenitic free-machining grade 303 is the usual alternative, though it is non-magnetic and behaves quite differently.

Sulphur is the addition that defines the grade, and unusually it carries a minimum rather than a maximum: 0.15% at least. Sulphur combines with manganese to form manganese sulphide inclusions distributed through the steel. Those inclusions act as internal stress raisers during cutting, breaking the chip cleanly instead of letting it draw out into long strings, which is what delivers the faster cutting speeds, better surface finish and longer tool life the grade is bought for.

Chromium at 16.00-18.00% generates the passive skin and provides corrosion resistance in mild atmospheric conditions. It also keeps the structure ferritic across the whole temperature range, so the grade cannot be hardened by transformation.

Carbon is allowed up to 0.12%, higher than in modern low-carbon ferritics, and contributes some strength while limiting how far corrosion resistance can be pushed.

One point to watch on equivalents: ASTM A582 specifies no molybdenum for Type 430F, whereas the European grade 1.4104 (X14CrMoS17) carries a deliberate molybdenum addition. The two are close but not identical, so if molybdenum matters to your application, check the analysis rather than the grade name.

Manganese up to 1.25% is essential, since it is what ties up the sulphur as manganese sulphide. Silicon deoxidises, and phosphorus is a residual with a slightly relaxed limit of 0.060%, reflecting the free-machining nature of the grade.

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of SS 430F Round Bar

ASTM A582 / A582M controls free-machining stainless bars principally through composition and hardness rather than through a full set of mandatory tensile minima, because these grades are bought for machinability and the finished part is almost always machined from the bar. The annealed hardness ceiling is the figure that gets verified. The tensile, proof strength, elongation and reduction of area values shown here are typical for annealed 430F and should be treated as indicative rather than as guaranteed acceptance limits.

Being ferritic, the grade cannot be hardened by quenching and tempering. Annealing at 760-830 C softens it and restores what ductility it has, and cold drawing is the only way to raise strength, at the usual cost in elongation.

Room-temperature impact toughness is low and falls further below ambient, because ferritic steels have a ductile-to-brittle transition. The sulphide inclusions make this worse by acting as crack initiation sites, and they also reduce transverse ductility noticeably compared with longitudinal. Neither ASTM A582 nor normal practice imposes a Charpy requirement.

None of this matters much in the applications the grade actually serves, which are small machined components under modest static load.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Stainless Steel 430F Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Round bar made from free-machining ferritic stainless steel Type 430F (UNS S43020 / 1.4104), which is Type 430 with a deliberate sulphur addition of 0.15% minimum. Supplied annealed to ASTM A582 / A582M, it machines far faster than standard 430 and is used for high-volume turned components. It is magnetic, cannot be hardened by heat treatment, and is less corrosion resistant than plain 430.
The sulphur addition. Sulphur combines with manganese to form manganese sulphide inclusions spread through the steel, and those inclusions break the chip during cutting instead of letting it pull out into long strings. That means higher cutting speeds, better surface finish, longer tool life and far less operator intervention on automatic lathes. Everything else about the grade is essentially Type 430.
ASTM A582 / A582M, the standard covering free-machining stainless steel bars, where the grade is Type 430F under UNS S43020. Dimensional tolerance, straightness and surface requirements follow ASTM A484 / A484M. In Europe the grade is specified as 1.4104 (X14CrMoS17) to EN 10088-3. Note that A582 controls these grades mainly by composition and hardness rather than by a full set of tensile minima.
UNS S43020 in the USA, 1.4104 (X14CrMoS17) to EN 10088-3 in Europe and the United Kingdom, SUS 430F under JIS G4303 in Japan, STS 430F under KS D 3706 in South Korea, and X14CrMoS17 under ISO 15510. Note that the European grade 1.4104 carries a molybdenum addition which ASTM A582 does not specify for Type 430F, so the two are close rather than identical. Check the reported analysis if molybdenum matters to your application.
No, and the gap is not trivial. The manganese sulphide inclusions that make the grade machinable are also preferential sites for pitting to start, so 430F sits meaningfully below plain 430 in corrosion performance. It belongs in mild atmospheric and indoor service. For marine, chloride or chemical exposure it is the wrong choice, and either standard 430 or an austenitic grade should be specified instead.
Yes, strongly, in every condition. The structure is ferritic and stays ferritic through heating and cooling. That is often the reason the grade is chosen rather than an incidental property, since solenoid cores, armatures and various instrument components rely on a ferromagnetic stainless material that also machines quickly. Austenitic free-machining grades such as 303 cannot do this job.
It is not recommended. The high sulphur content that gives the grade its machinability also causes hot cracking in the weld metal, and the ferritic structure suffers grain coarsening in the heat-affected zone that costs what ductility the material has. Welded construction is normally avoided altogether, with parts machined from solid or mechanically assembled instead. If joining is unavoidable, brazing is generally the better route.
Diameters typically run 6 mm to 150 mm, with larger sizes subject to enquiry, since demand for this grade concentrates in the smaller sizes used for automatic machining. Mill lengths are 3 to 6 metres, random or cut to length. Most material is supplied cold-drawn, turned or centreless ground, because automatic machining needs the close diameter tolerance and consistent surface that cold finishing provides.
