Product Description for Stainless Steel 410 Round Bar

Stainless Steel 410 Round Bar is sold as UNS S41000 and W.Nr. 1.4006. The bar standard is ASTM A276 / A276M. Dimensional and surface requirements sit in ASTM A484 / A484M. EN, JIS, GB/T and KS all carry an equivalent designation.

The grade is a basic martensitic stainless steel containing 11.5-13.5% chromium with carbon up to 0.15% under ASTM A276. Unlike austenitic grades it can be hardened by quenching and tempering, reaching 830 MPa minimum tensile strength in ASTM A276 Condition H while retaining useful corrosion resistance in mild atmospheric, steam and fresh water environments. The steel is magnetic in all conditions.

Supply is in the annealed (Condition A) or hardened and tempered condition, in diameters between 3 mm and 500 mm and random lengths of 3 to 6 m; larger diameters are forged and cut lengths are available. Surface options run from hot finished and pickled through cold drawn, peeled and turned to ground and polished. The grade is hardenable by quenching and tempering, and bar is normally machined in the annealed condition before heat treatment.

Fabricators use it for pump and valve shafts, fasteners, turbine parts and hardened machine components across power generation, petrochemical, oil and gas, water treatment and general engineering. An EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate covering heat analysis, mechanical test results and heat treatment condition is the normal documentation. The melting range is roughly 1480 – 1530 C. The bar is ferromagnetic in every condition. Density is around 7.70 g/cm3 and the modulus of elasticity about 200 GPa. Third party inspection, positive material identification and non-destructive examination can be added at order stage.

Common Applications of Stainless Steel 410 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Technical Specifications

ASTM A276 / A276M and ASTM A479 / A479M is the usual ordering specification and ASTM A484 / A484M holds the tolerances. The European designation is 1.4006 (X12Cr13). State the standard, the delivery condition and any supplementary testing when ordering.

Hardening is carried out by austenitising at approximately 925-1010 C, quenching in oil or air, and tempering. Tempering between 565 C and 650 C gives a balance of strength and toughness; tempering between 425 C and 565 C should be avoided because it reduces both toughness and corrosion resistance.

The route is either hot finishing, meaning rolling or forging with heat treatment and pickling, or cold finishing by drawing, peeling, turning or grinding. Size and finish class together decide the diameter, out of round, straightness and length tolerances.

Bar is normally supplied annealed (Condition A) for machining, with hardening and tempering performed after machining. Where bar is required in the hardened condition, the tempering temperature and target hardness should be agreed at order stage.

Physical property figures are typical producer data rather than standard requirements. Mechanical testing follows ASTM A370, and the certificate records analysis, test results, heat treatment and heat number.

Carbon, permitted to 0.15% maximum by ASTM A276 and specified as 0.08-0.15% by EN 1.4006, is what makes the steel hardenable, since it enables the formation of martensite on quenching. Chromium at 11.5-13.5% is the minimum needed for a passive film, and this is why corrosion resistance is modest compared with austenitic grades.

Chromium runs 11.50 to 13.50% here, and it is what makes the steel stainless: it builds the passive oxide film that resists attack. Beyond those, the standard controls only carbon, manganese, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur and chromium; nothing else is specified. Carbon is held between 0.08 and 0.15%.

Manganese and silicon are deoxidisers left over from melting and contribute modest solid solution strengthening. Phosphorus and sulphur are kept to low maxima, since both damage hot workability, weldability and corrosion resistance unless machinability is the priority.

The ASTM, EN, JIS, GB/T and KS versions are close but not identical. Compare the heat analysis on the mill certificate with the standard actually ordered before accepting the material for critical service. Chemical analysis is carried out to ASTM A751. Where the composition table shows no limit for an element, the standard sets no requirement and the element need not be determined or reported.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of SS 410 Round Bar

ASTM A276 specifies three conditions. Condition A, annealed, requires 480 MPa minimum tensile and 275 MPa minimum yield. Condition T, tempered at high temperature, requires 690 MPa and 550 MPa, and Condition H, tempered at low temperature, requires 830 MPa and 620 MPa with reduced elongation.

Properties depend on which condition is ordered. Bar comes annealed so it can be cut, and the service properties arrive with the later heat treatment. Testing is ASTM A370 for tensile and ASTM E10 or E18 for hardness; a heat treated order needs its target hardness or strength range stated.

Design to the minima of the ordered standard and condition; the certificate carries what the heat actually achieved. Bar diameter has an effect of its own, through cooling rate in heat treatment and the amount of working the section received.

Component selection is normally driven by the strength and hardness needed in service, with the tempering temperature chosen to balance them against toughness and corrosion resistance. Machining is carried out in the annealed condition, and allowance should be made for the small dimensional change that occurs during hardening. Where higher corrosion resistance is required at similar strength, a precipitation-hardening grade is usually the alternative considered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Stainless Steel 410 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Stainless Steel 410 Round Bar is solid round bar in grade 410, martensitic chromium stainless steel designated UNS S41000 and W.Nr. 1.4006. It is made to ASTM A276 / A276M and ASTM A479 / A479M, supplied in the annealed (Condition A) or hardened and tempered condition, and machined into pump and valve shafts, fasteners, turbine parts and hardened machine components for the power generation, petrochemical, oil and gas, water treatment and general engineering industries. Finish options run from hot finished through cold drawn and peeled to ground and polished.
ASTM A276 / A276M covers the material itself, and ASTM A484 / A484M covers dimensions, straightness and surface. The European designation is 1.4006 (X12Cr13). Mechanical testing is to ASTM A370, with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate as the usual documentation. Both the standard and the delivery condition belong on the purchase order.
The equivalents are EN 10088-3: 1.4006 (X12Cr13); JIS G4303: SUS410; GB/T 1220: 12Cr13 (S41010); KS D 3706: STS410; ISO 15510: X12Cr13. Not every country lists this grade, and the limits differ slightly where they do, so equivalence on pressure or code work should be confirmed against the certified heat analysis rather than assumed.
The usual range is 3 mm to 500 mm, going higher by forging. Expect 3 mm to 100 mm in cold finished bar and 16 mm to 500 mm hot finished or forged. Standard lengths are random 3 to 6 m, and cut lengths are available. ASTM A484 / A484M or a written agreement sets the tolerances.
Tensile Strength (Condition A, annealed) 480 (min) MPa; Yield Strength 0.2% (Condition A, annealed) 275 (min) MPa; Elongation in 50 mm (Condition A, hot-finished) 20 (min) %; Elongation in 50 mm (Condition A, cold-finished) 16 (min) %. Those figures belong to the annealed (Condition A) or hardened and tempered condition, tested to ASTM A370. Diameter, finish and heat treatment change what a given bar delivers, so use the standard's minima for design and the mill certificate for actual results.
Principal elements: C 0.08-0.15%, Cr 11.50-13.50%. Manganese, silicon, phosphorus and sulphur sit inside the standard limits. Carbon, permitted to 0.15% maximum by ASTM A276 and specified as 0.08-0.15% by EN 1.4006, is what makes the steel hardenable, since it enables the formation of martensite on quenching. The ASTM, EN, JIS and GB/T versions differ a little, which is why the heat analysis on the certificate is worth comparing with the ordered specification.
Yes. Random mill lengths, fixed or cut lengths to an agreed tolerance, and machining to drawing are all available, as are hot finished and pickled, cold drawn, peeled, turned, centreless ground and polished surfaces. Choose bright or ground bar for tight tolerance and precision machining, hot finished bar where cost matters more. Ends, chamfers, marking and packing are specified the same way.
Yes. It is a martensitic grade, so it hardens by austenitising at approximately 925-1010 C followed by an oil or air quench and a temper. Hardness of up to about ASTM A276 Condition H requires 830 MPa minimum tensile strength and Condition T requires 690 MPa. Tempering between 425 C and 565 C should be avoided, as it lowers both impact toughness and corrosion resistance. Bar is usually machined in the annealed condition and heat treated afterwards.
