Product Description for Stainless Steel 430 Round Bar

Grade 430 is designated UNS S43000 and W.Nr. 1.4016. As round bar it is normally ordered to ASTM A276 / A276M, with ASTM A484 / A484M covering dimensional and surface requirements. EN, JIS, GB/T and KS all carry an equivalent designation.

The grade is a ferritic stainless steel containing 16-18% chromium with carbon limited to 0.12% and no deliberate nickel addition. The ferritic structure gives good resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, moderate general corrosion resistance in atmospheric and mildly corrosive service, and lower thermal expansion than austenitic grades. The steel is magnetic and cannot be hardened by heat treatment.

The delivery condition is annealed. Available finishes include hot finished and pickled, cold drawn, peeled, turned, centreless ground and polished, and the choice follows the tolerance and surface quality the part needs. Common diameters run 3 mm to 500 mm, larger on request by forging, in 3 to 6 m random lengths or cut to size. The grade cannot be hardened by heat treatment and is supplied in the annealed condition.

It is machined into decorative hardware, fasteners, trim and machined general engineering parts. The main buyers are in architecture, automotive, domestic appliance manufacturing and general engineering. Material normally ships against an EN 10204 3.1 certificate showing heat analysis, mechanical results and delivery condition. Density is around 7.70 g/cm3 and the modulus of elasticity about 200 GPa. Third party inspection, positive material identification and non-destructive examination can be added at order stage. The melting range is roughly 1425 – 1510 C. The bar is ferromagnetic in every condition.

Common Applications of Stainless Steel 430 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Orders are normally placed to ASTM A276 / A276M and ASTM A479 / A479M, with ASTM A484 / A484M carrying the dimensional side. European practice specifies the same steel to EN as 1.4016 (X6Cr17). Whichever it is, the standard, the condition and any extra testing belong on the purchase order.

Annealing is carried out at approximately 760-830 C followed by air or water cooling. The grade is not hardenable by quenching; it may be work hardened to a limited extent only.

Bar reaches its finish two ways: hot rolling or forging followed by heat treatment and pickling, or a further cold operation such as drawing, peeling, turning or grinding. Tolerances on diameter, out of round, straightness and length depend on both size and finish class.

Because the grade contains no nickel, its price is more stable and generally lower than austenitic alternatives, which is a significant commercial factor in high-volume decorative and appliance applications.

Treat the physical properties as typical producer figures; the standard does not set them. Mechanical testing follows ASTM A370 and everything tested appears on the certificate.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for SS 430 Round Bar

Chromium at 16-18% provides the passive film and the ferritic structure. The absence of nickel is deliberate: it keeps the steel ferritic and magnetic, and confers strong resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, to which austenitic grades are vulnerable.

Chromium runs 16.00 to 18.00% here, and it is what makes the steel stainless: it builds the passive oxide film that resists attack. There is no deliberate nickel addition, which keeps the structure ferritic. Beyond those, the standard controls only carbon, manganese, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur and chromium; nothing else is specified. Carbon is capped at 0.12%.

Manganese and silicon go in as deoxidisers during melting and add a little strength. Phosphorus and sulphur are residuals, held low because they hurt hot working, welding and corrosion resistance; sulphur is raised only when a free machining variant is wanted.

Limits differ a little between the ASTM, EN, JIS, GB/T and KS versions. That usually makes no practical difference, but it can in aggressive or high temperature duty, which is why the certified heat analysis is worth reading against the ordered specification. Chemical analysis is carried out to ASTM A751.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of SS 430 Round Bar

The governing standard matters. ASTM A276 Condition A requires 415 MPa minimum tensile and 207 MPa minimum yield, while ASTM A479 for pressure-vessel bar requires 485 MPa and 275 MPa with a hardness ceiling of 192 HBW. Ductility and toughness are lower than austenitic grades, particularly at sub-zero temperature.

The annealed condition sets the properties, since this steel is not hardened by heat treatment. Hardness follows ASTM E10 or E18 and tensile testing follows ASTM A370.

Design to the minima of the ordered standard and condition; the certificate carries what the heat actually achieved. Bar diameter has an effect of its own, through cooling rate in heat treatment and the amount of working the section received.

For component selection, the grade suits parts where moderate strength, magnetic response, resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and economy matter more than high ductility or low-temperature toughness. Impact toughness falls sharply below ambient temperature, so sub-zero service should be avoided unless verified by testing. Machinability is generally better than austenitic grades because the material work hardens far less.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Stainless Steel 430 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Stainless Steel 430 Round Bar is solid round bar in grade 430, ferritic chromium stainless steel designated UNS S43000 and W.Nr. 1.4016. It is made to ASTM A276 / A276M and ASTM A479 / A479M, supplied in the annealed condition, and machined into decorative hardware, fasteners, trim and machined general engineering parts for the architecture, automotive, domestic appliance manufacturing and general engineering industries. Finish options run from hot finished through cold drawn and peeled to ground and polished.
ASTM A276 / A276M covers the material itself, and ASTM A484 / A484M covers dimensions, straightness and surface. The European designation is 1.4016 (X6Cr17). Mechanical testing is to ASTM A370, with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate as the usual documentation. Both the standard and the delivery condition belong on the purchase order.
The equivalents are EN 10088-3: 1.4016 (X6Cr17); JIS G4303: SUS430; GB/T 1220: 10Cr17 (S11710); KS D 3706: STS430; ISO 15510: X6Cr17. Not every country lists this grade, and the limits differ slightly where they do, so equivalence on pressure or code work should be confirmed against the certified heat analysis rather than assumed.
The usual range is 3 mm to 500 mm, going higher by forging. Expect 3 mm to 100 mm in cold finished bar and 16 mm to 500 mm hot finished or forged. Standard lengths are random 3 to 6 m, and cut lengths are available. ASTM A484 / A484M or a written agreement sets the tolerances.
Tensile Strength (ASTM A276, Condition A) 415 (min) MPa; Yield Strength 0.2% (ASTM A276, Condition A) 207 (min) MPa; Elongation in 50 mm (ASTM A276, hot-finished) 20 (min) %; Reduction of Area (ASTM A276) 45 (min) %. Those figures belong to the annealed condition, tested to ASTM A370. Diameter, finish and heat treatment change what a given bar delivers, so use the standard's minima for design and the mill certificate for actual results.
Principal elements: C 0.12% max, Cr 16.00-18.00%. Manganese, silicon, phosphorus and sulphur sit inside the standard limits. Chromium at 16-18% provides the passive film and the ferritic structure. The ASTM, EN, JIS and GB/T versions differ a little, which is why the heat analysis on the certificate is worth comparing with the ordered specification.
Yes. Random mill lengths, fixed or cut lengths to an agreed tolerance, and machining to drawing are all available, as are hot finished and pickled, cold drawn, peeled, turned, centreless ground and polished surfaces. Choose bright or ground bar for tight tolerance and precision machining, hot finished bar where cost matters more. Ends, chamfers, marking and packing are specified the same way.
No. The grade is ferritic and remains ferritic across its temperature range, so it cannot form martensite and cannot be hardened by quenching. Annealing at approximately 760-830 C is used to soften the material and relieve stresses. Limited strengthening is possible through cold work, but the response is much smaller than in austenitic grades and ductility falls quickly. Where a hardenable stainless steel of similar chromium content is needed, grade 431 or the 440 series should be considered.
