Product Description for Stainless Steel 317L Round Bar

Type 317L (UNS S31703) is a low-carbon molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel, supplied mainly to ASTM A276 / A276M and ASTM A479 / A479M with dimensions to ASTM A484 / A484M. European practice specifies it as grade 1.4438 to EN 10088-3.

It sits a clear step above 316L. Molybdenum runs 3.00-4.00% against the 2.00-3.00% of 316L, and nickel is raised to 11.00-15.00% to balance the extra molybdenum and hold the austenitic structure. The result is a pitting resistance equivalent normally around 29-31, against roughly 24 for 316L, which buys better performance in chloride-bearing and sulphurous conditions without moving to a super austenitic grade.

Carbon is capped at 0.035%, so the grade resists sensitisation and can be welded without post-weld heat treatment in most sections.

Bar is supplied solution annealed at roughly 1040-1120 C and quenched fast, hot-finished or cold-finished by drawing, peeling, turning or grinding, in diameters from about 6 mm to 300 mm, random or cut lengths.

The structure is fully austenitic, so annealed bar is non-magnetic and will not harden by heat treatment. Strength comes only from cold work, and cold-finished material is normally re-annealed where full ductility and corrosion resistance are both wanted.

One caution on ordering: 317L and 317LMN are different grades. 317LMN (UNS S31726) carries higher molybdenum and a controlled nitrogen addition, and 317L will not satisfy a specification that calls for it. Check the UNS number rather than the shorthand name.

Most demand comes from flue-gas desulphurisation equipment, pulp and paper bleaching plant, chemical process hardware, condenser and heat-exchanger parts, pump and valve components and machined fittings handling acidic chloride process streams.

Common Applications of Stainless Steel 317L Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Bar comes to ASTM A276 / A276M or ASTM A479 / A479M under UNS S31703, or to EN 10088-3 as 1.4438 in the +AT solution-annealed condition, with ASME SA-479 for pressure-retaining components. Diameter, straightness and surface requirements sit in ASTM A484 / A484M, or EN 10060 and EN 10278 in European practice.

Solution annealing runs 1040-1120 C followed by a fast water quench. The quench matters because the raised molybdenum content leaves the grade more open to sigma and chi phase precipitation than 316L if cooling through 600-950 C is slow, and either phase costs toughness and corrosion resistance.

One point that catches buyers out: 317L and 317LMN are not interchangeable. 317LMN (UNS S31726) carries higher molybdenum and a controlled nitrogen addition, giving a materially higher pitting resistance equivalent. If the specification says 317LMN, ordering 317L will not meet it.

Nothing thermal will harden the grade, so strength can be raised by cold work and nothing else, and cold-finished bar is normally re-annealed where full ductility and corrosion resistance are both wanted.

Supplementary testing that comes up regularly includes ASTM A262 Practice E intergranular corrosion testing, ferrite content checks and ASTM G48 pitting tests where chloride service is critical.

Molybdenum at 3.00-4.00% is the reason this grade exists. Raising it from the 2.00-3.00% of 316L strengthens the passive film against localised breakdown, and that shows up directly as better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-bearing and sulphurous media. It carries most of the pitting resistance equivalent of roughly 29-31.

Chromium at 18.00-20.00% creates the protective film itself and handles general corrosion resistance, running a little higher than the 16.00-18.00% of 316L.

Nickel at 11.00-15.00% is raised deliberately. Molybdenum is a strong ferrite former, so without the extra nickel the structure would not stay fully austenitic at this molybdenum level. Nickel also supplies ductility, toughness and resistance in reducing media.

Carbon is capped at 0.035%. Keeping it low means little chromium carbide can precipitate at grain boundaries during welding or hot exposure, so the grade holds its resistance to intergranular attack without stabilising elements or post-weld heat treatment.

Nitrogen up to 0.10% adds modest strength and supports pitting resistance, though it is not a deliberate addition here as it is in 317LMN. Manganese and silicon deoxidise, and phosphorus and sulphur are residuals restricted to protect hot workability and corrosion behaviour.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of SS 317L Round Bar

Solution-annealed values, all minima, with hardness capping instead and the EN tensile figure given as a range. ASTM and EN requirements differ, so they are listed separately rather than merged. ASTM A370 governs the testing, carried out on material in its delivered condition.

Annealed 317L gives moderate strength with high ductility and toughness, much the same as 316L at room temperature. Nobody specifies this grade for its mechanical properties. It is bought for corrosion resistance, and the tensile numbers are simply what the standard requires the material to demonstrate.

A fully austenitic structure means no ductile-to-brittle transition, so impact toughness holds down to cryogenic temperatures, though ASTM A276 imposes no mandatory Charpy requirement.

Nothing thermal will harden the alloy. Cold drawing raises tensile and proof strength substantially at the cost of elongation, and can leave slight magnetic permeability behind.

Section size is worth watching in heavy bar, where a slower quench from solution temperature can allow intermetallic precipitation that cuts both toughness and corrosion performance. Design should work from the minimum values of the ordered standard and condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Stainless Steel 317L Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Round bar made from low-carbon molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel Type 317L (UNS S31703 / 1.4438), carrying roughly 18-20% chromium, 11-15% nickel and 3.00-4.00% molybdenum with carbon capped at 0.035%. Supplied solution annealed to ASTM A276 / A276M and ASTM A479 / A479M, it is the step you take when 316L no longer copes with the chloride or acid loading.
Molybdenum and nickel. 317L runs 3.00-4.00% molybdenum against 2.00-3.00% for 316L, with nickel raised to 11.00-15.00% to keep the structure austenitic against the extra molybdenum. That lifts the pitting resistance equivalent from roughly 24 to around 29-31, which means better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-bearing and sulphurous conditions. Mechanical properties are much the same.
ASTM A276 / A276M or ASTM A479 / A479M under UNS S31703, with ASME SA-479 for pressure-retaining components. Dimensions and surface follow ASTM A484 / A484M. European supply is to EN 10088-3 as grade 1.4438 in the +AT solution-annealed condition. State the governing standard, condition and any supplementary corrosion testing on the purchase order.
UNS S31703 in the USA, 1.4438 (X2CrNiMo18-15-4) to EN 10088-3 in Europe and the United Kingdom, SUS 317L under JIS G4303 in Japan, 022Cr19Ni13Mo3 under GB/T 1220 in China, STS 317L under KS D 3706 in South Korea, and X2CrNiMo18-15-4 under ISO 15510. Composition limits line up closely across these standards.
No, and the two are not interchangeable. 317LMN (UNS S31726) carries higher molybdenum plus a controlled nitrogen addition, which pushes its pitting resistance equivalent well above that of plain 317L. If a specification calls for 317LMN, supplying 317L will not satisfy it. Check the UNS number rather than the shorthand grade name, because the names look similar enough to cause genuine ordering mistakes.
Solution annealed, ASTM A276 requires at least 515 MPa tensile strength, 205 MPa 0.2% proof strength, 40% elongation in Condition A and 40% reduction of area, with hardness capped at 217 HB or 95 HRB. EN 10088-3 for 1.4438 in the +AT condition asks for 200 MPa minimum proof strength with tensile framed as a 500-700 MPa range.
Yes. Carbon capped at 0.035% keeps chromium carbide from precipitating at grain boundaries, so most sections can be welded without post-weld heat treatment and the material holds its resistance to intergranular attack. Matching 317L filler or an over-alloyed nickel-base filler is normal. Keep heat input controlled and interpass temperature low, because the raised molybdenum makes intermetallic precipitation easier than in 316L.
Diameters typically run 6 mm to 300 mm, with larger sizes forged on enquiry. Mill lengths are 3 to 6 metres, random or cut to length. Diameter, straightness and length tolerances follow ASTM A484 / A484M and vary with size and finish class. Hot-rolled and pickled, cold-drawn, peeled, turned, ground and polished finishes are all available on request.
