Product Description for Alloy Steel 30CrMo4 Round Bar
Alloy Steel 30CrMo4 Round Bar is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel with material number 1.7216. It sits between 25CrMo4 and 34CrMo4 in carbon content and strength. The designation is used in European standards for seamless tubes and mechanical parts, and it is widely traded as a bar grade for machined and forged components.
The steel contains about 0.27–0.34% carbon with chromium and molybdenum additions. After quenching and tempering, it gives a good balance of strength and toughness. Molybdenum in 30CrMo4 helps tubes and bars keep strength after welding and stress relief.
The grade is close to the American AISI 4130 and the Japanese SCM430, and to the Chinese 30CrMo. It is often chosen when a little more strength than 25CrMo4 is needed while keeping reasonable weldability.
Bars are supplied hot rolled or forged, in annealed, normalised or quenched and tempered condition, and can be peeled, turned or cold drawn.
Common applications include shafts, axles, gears of moderate load, flanges, fittings, hydraulic parts, oil and gas components, aerospace and motorsport tubing parts, and general machine parts. Because 30CrMo4 is not listed in EN 10083-3, buyers should state the governing specification and required properties clearly on the order. Grade 30CrMo4 is best known as a tube steel in EN 10297-1. Bar with the same chemistry is used for machined parts that are welded to those tubes, such as hydraulic cylinder ends and fittings, so tube and bar respond alike to welding and heat treatment. Its chemistry is close to AISI 4130, which makes it useful where European and American drawings meet.
Common Applications of Alloy Steel 30CrMo4 Round Bar
➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.
➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.
➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.
➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Grade 30CrMo4 (1.7216) is defined in EN 10297-1 for seamless mechanical tubes. It is not included in EN 10083-3, so bars are usually supplied to the mill specification, a customer specification or with chemistry per 1.7216 and agreed mechanical properties. The order must state the governing document.
Hardening is usually done from about 840–880°C with oil or water quenching, followed by tempering at about 540–680°C to reach the required strength.
The carbon equivalent is moderate, so welding is possible with preheat and suitable procedures.
Physical data for 30CrMo4 are reference values, close to those of AISI 4130. Standard testing covers heat analysis, hardness and tensile tests. Impact tests, ultrasonic testing and grain size checks can be ordered.
Because 30CrMo4 is not in EN 10083-3, the most important part of the order is the governing document. Options include a mill specification, a customer specification, EN 10297-1 properties applied to bar by agreement, or dual certification with AISI 4130 to ASTM A29 or A322. The document should state heat analysis limits, delivery condition, hardness or tensile values, impact tests if needed, and dimensional tolerances. Without this, two suppliers may deliver very different material under the same name. For welded parts, also ask for the heat carbon equivalent.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for 30CrMo4 Round Bar
The table shows commonly published limits for 30CrMo4 (1.7216) as used in EN 10297-1. Because bar supply is often to a mill or customer specification, the ordered document should be checked.
Carbon at 0.27–0.34% gives higher strength than 25CrMo4 after hardening, while still allowing reasonable weldability and toughness.
Chromium at 0.80–1.15% raises hardenability and resistance to softening. Molybdenum at 0.15–0.30% adds hardenability, improves creep strength and reduces temper embrittlement.
Manganese is lower than in many Cr-Mo steels, which helps weldability. In 30CrMo4, phosphorus and sulfur are kept low to protect toughness and weld quality. The low manganese range of 0.35–0.60% is the clearest difference from 25CrMo4 and 34CrMo4, which have 0.60–0.90%. Lower manganese reduces hardenability a little, but it improves weldability and lowers the risk of hard spots in the heat-affected zone. This is why the grade is popular for thin-wall welded tubes and the fittings that are welded to them. The chemistry closely matches AISI 4130, which has carbon of 0.28–0.33%, manganese of 0.40–0.60%, chromium of 0.80–1.10% and molybdenum of 0.15–0.25%. When dual certification is requested, the heat must meet the tighter of each limit.

Mechanical Properties
Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of 30CrMo4 Round Bar
The values shown are reference ranges for 30CrMo4 after quenching and tempering, covering different section sizes and tempering temperatures. They are for guidance only and are not specification minimums.
Strength depends on bar diameter and tempering temperature. Higher tempering gives lower strength and better toughness. Because EN 10083-3 does not cover this grade, the required minimum values should be agreed and written on the order.
Impact testing can be added where toughness is critical. Confirm all results on the mill certificate. EN 10297-1 gives quenched and tempered properties for 30CrMo4 tube by wall thickness, but these tube values do not automatically apply to bar, because a solid bar cools more slowly at its centre than a tube wall. For bar, the buyer should state required tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and impact energy for the actual diameter. Hardness testing along the bar is a quick way to check heat treatment uniformity. Because the grade has only moderate hardenability, the core of bars above about 60–80 mm will be softer after quenching.
Ask for hardness tests at both ends of each bar.
