Product Description for Alloy Steel 15CrMo Round Bar

Alloy Steel 15CrMo Round Bar is a low-carbon chromium-molybdenum heat-resistant steel to the Chinese standard GB/T 3077. It contains about 0.12–0.18% carbon, 0.80–1.10% chromium and 0.40–0.55% molybdenum.

This pearlitic steel is designed for service at elevated temperatures, usually up to about 510–550°C in steam and hot gas systems. Molybdenum gives creep strength, and chromium improves oxidation resistance and structural stability. At 0.12–0.18% carbon, 15CrMo welds easily and stays tough.

The same steel type is used for boiler tubes under the name 15CrMoG in GB/T 5310. Round bars are used for forgings, flanges, fittings, valve parts and fasteners in the same systems.

Bars are supplied hot rolled or forged, usually normalised and tempered, and can be peeled or turned.

Common applications include boiler and superheater parts, steam pipe flanges and fittings, headers, valve bodies, bolts and forgings for power plants, refineries and petrochemical heaters. The nearest European grade is 13CrMo4-5 (1.7335), and the nearest American forging grade is ASTM A182 F12. These are close in type but not identical in chemistry. Compared with plain carbon steel, the 0.40–0.55% molybdenum lets 15CrMo keep useful strength in long service at elevated temperature, while its low carbon keeps welds tough. It is one of the most common alloy steels in Chinese boiler and refinery systems, which makes it easy to buy in China and to match with 15CrMoG tubes and 15CrMoR plates in the same plant. Forgings, flanges and bar for fittings can also be supplied, cut to length and marked with heat numbers so that they can be traced through fabrication and inspection.

Common Applications of Alloy Steel 15CrMo Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Alloy Steel 15CrMo Round Bar is ordered to GB/T 3077. For 15CrMo, rolled bar sizes follow GB/T 702 and forged bar sizes follow GB/T 908. The tube version is 15CrMoG to GB/T 5310.

The standard mechanical properties are measured on a 30 mm test blank after normalising at about 900°C with air cooling and tempering at about 650°C with air cooling.

The low carbon equivalent gives good weldability. Preheat and post-weld heat treatment are normally used for pressure parts.

The physical values for 15CrMo are reference data, useful for thermal stress checks. For pressure service, elevated temperature tensile tests, UT and third-party inspection can be ordered.

GB/T 3077-2015 applies its table values to bars up to 80 mm. For bars from 80 to 250 mm, it allows elongation, reduction of area and impact energy to fall by set amounts, for example 1%, 5% and 5% for 80–100 mm, rising to 3%, 15% and 15% for 150–250 mm. Buyers should check large bars against these reduced limits. Pressure parts made from 15CrMo are usually ordered with more than GB/T 3077 requires, such as elevated-temperature yield strength, and the purchase order should list these tests. The matching plate grade is 15CrMoR to GB/T 713.

Chemical Composition

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for 15CrMo Round Bar

The table shows the GB/T 3077 limits for 15CrMo in the high-quality grade.

Carbon is kept low at 0.12–0.18% for good weldability and toughness. Chromium at 0.80–1.10% improves oxidation resistance and structural stability at elevated temperature.

Molybdenum at 0.40–0.55% is the main creep-strengthening element. It strengthens the ferrite and slows softening at service temperature.

In 15CrMo, silicon and manganese deoxidise the steel. Phosphorus and sulfur in 15CrMo are held low because they weaken welds and grain boundaries over time. The molybdenum range of 0.40–0.55% is the highest among the common Chinese Cr-Mo structural grades. This is what gives 15CrMo its creep strength. Chromium at 0.80–1.10% protects against steam and gas oxidation and slows the breakdown of carbides during long service. Manganese at 0.40–0.70% is kept moderate for weldability. Silicon at 0.17–0.37% deoxidises the steel. The chemistry is close to the European 13CrMo4-5 (1.7335), which allows carbon of 0.08–0.18% and molybdenum of 0.40–0.60%, and to ASTM A182 F12, but these grades are not identical, so pressure-code approval is needed before substitution. Buyers of 15CrMo for creep service often cap copper and nickel residuals on the order.

For long service, low residual elements help limit embrittlement over many years at temperature.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of 15CrMo Round Bar

The values shown are GB/T 3077 minimum requirements for 15CrMo on a 30 mm test blank after normalising at about 900°C and tempering at about 650°C. The 94 J impact value for 15CrMo is a KU2 U-notch result.

The steel has moderate strength and very high toughness at room temperature. Its main value is creep resistance at elevated temperature, which should be taken from creep data and design codes.

Delivered 15CrMo bar must not exceed 179 HBW. Specify elevated temperature properties where the design requires them. GB/T 3077 requires 15CrMo to reach tensile strength of at least 440 MPa, lower yield strength of at least 295 MPa, elongation of at least 22%, reduction of area of at least 60% and U-notch impact energy of at least 94 J, tested on a 30 mm blank after normalising and tempering. These values show a soft, very tough steel. Its value lies in creep resistance at about 510–550°C, not room-temperature strength. For pressure design, allowable stresses come from the relevant boiler or pressure vessel code and are based on creep and rupture data. Weld hardness after post-weld heat treatment is a useful check that the heat-affected zone has been properly tempered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Alloy Steel 15CrMo Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Choose 15CrMo for heat-resisting parts working up to about 510–540°C, such as boiler fittings, flanges and steam pipework. It is cheaper than 12Cr1MoV, easier to weld and more widely stocked. Choose 12Cr1MoV when the metal temperature is higher, up to about 580°C, or when the design needs more long-term creep strength from vanadium carbides.
15CrMo is the bar and structural grade in GB/T 3077. 15CrMoG is the high-pressure boiler tube grade in GB/T 5310, with similar chemistry but extra tests for pressure service, such as flattening, flaring and elevated-temperature properties. Flanges and fittings welded to 15CrMoG tubes are often made from 15CrMo bar or forgings, with extra tests added to the order.
They are close in type but not direct equivalents. 13CrMo4-5 (1.7335) and A182 F12 are also about 1% Cr and 0.5% Mo steels, but their carbon, manganese and molybdenum limits differ slightly, and their standards set different tests. In pressure equipment, the design code and inspector must accept any substitution, so check before using one grade in place of another.
15CrMo is commonly used up to about 510–550°C in steam and hot gas systems. Above this range, its creep strength falls quickly, and grades such as 12Cr1MoV or 9% chromium steels are chosen. The allowable stress at the service temperature should always be taken from the governing pressure code, not from room-temperature tests.
Supply 15CrMo normalised at about 900°C and tempered at about 650°C. It welds with matching 1Cr-0.5Mo consumables, preheat of about 150–250°C and post-weld heat treatment at about 650–700°C for thick sections. Because it is soft in the normalised and tempered state, 15CrMo turns and drills easily with ordinary carbide tools. Keep weld heat input moderate.
15CrMo is not suited to service much above about 540°C, where its creep strength and oxidation resistance fall. It is only a nearest equivalent to 13CrMo4-5 or ASTM F12, so code approval must be checked before substitution. It has no corrosion resistance in wet service, and its room-temperature strength is too low for highly stressed machine parts.
