Product Description for Alloy Steel EN26 Round Bar
Alloy Steel EN26 Round Bar is a high-nickel chromium-molybdenum high-tensile steel known in the British system as EN26 and in BS 970 as 826M40. It contains about 0.36–0.44% carbon, 2.30–2.80% nickel, 0.50–0.80% chromium and 0.45–0.65% molybdenum.
EN26 has the same alloy base as EN25 but higher carbon. This allows higher strength levels after hardening while still giving good toughness thanks to the high nickel content. The steel has very high hardenability and can reach high conditions in large sections.
EN26 is supplied hardened and tempered to BS 970 conditions, usually from V up to Y for highly stressed parts. It can also be surface hardened by nitriding.
EN26 bars are made hot rolled or forged, then peeled or turned, annealed or hardened and tempered.
Common applications include heavy-duty gears, shafts, crankshafts, high-strength bolts, aircraft parts and other components that need very high strength in large sections. No direct EN or ASTM equivalent has been identified, so buyers usually order to BS 970 826M40 or an agreed specification. EN26 is the higher-carbon partner of EN25. Where EN25 is chosen for maximum toughness, EN26 is chosen when the part also needs higher strength in a large section, for example heavy gears, crankshafts and high-strength bolts for mining and defence equipment. Like EN25, it is a special-order grade in most markets and is usually supplied as forged or hot rolled bar from specialist mills. Large bars are usually forged and ultrasonically tested, and buyers should agree the test positions, condition letter and certificate standard before production starts.
Common Applications of Alloy Steel EN26 Round Bar
➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.
➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.
➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.
➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Technical Specifications
Get the key technical specifications for Alloy Steel EN26 Round Bar
EN26 Round Bar is ordered to BS 970 as 826M40 in a named condition. As BS 970 is withdrawn and there is no direct EN grade, orders usually quote BS 970 limits as an agreed specification.
Hardening is normally done from about 820–850°C with oil quenching, followed by tempering to reach the required condition.
The very high hardenability allows high conditions in larger ruling sections than EN24.
EN26 has a very high carbon equivalent, so welding is avoided where possible. Forged EN26 bars are nearly always ultrasonically tested.
Because BS 970 is withdrawn, EN26 is usually ordered to BS 970 826M40 as an agreed specification. There is no direct modern EN grade. When a customer needs a standard grade, alternatives such as 34CrNiMo6 or 30CrNiMo8 may be offered, but their chemistry differs, so designer approval is needed. For conditions X and Y, parts are usually rough machined, hardened and tempered, then finish ground, to keep dimensions accurate and avoid machining very hard material. Ultrasonic testing and impact tests at stated positions are common requirements for large bars and forgings.
Hardness checks at both ends of each bar help confirm uniform response.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for EN26 Round Bar
The table shows BS 970 limits for 826M40 (EN26).
Carbon at 0.36–0.44% gives higher strength than EN25 after hardening. Nickel at 2.30–2.80% keeps toughness high at these strength levels and adds hardenability.
Molybdenum at 0.45–0.65% strongly raises hardenability and reduces temper embrittlement. Chromium at 0.50–0.80% adds hardenability.
In EN26, manganese and silicon serve as deoxidisers. The only real difference from EN25 is carbon. At 0.36–0.44%, EN26 can reach higher hardness and strength after quenching, while the same 2.30–2.80% nickel keeps toughness good at these higher levels. Molybdenum at 0.45–0.65% makes the steel very deep hardening, so large sections harden well even in oil, and it also protects against temper embrittlement. Chromium at 0.50–0.80% adds some hardenability. Manganese at 0.45–0.70% adds a little hardenability to EN26. The higher carbon makes EN26 more prone to quench cracking than EN25, so part design and quenching should avoid sharp corners.
EN26 buyers often set tighter phosphorus and sulfur limits than BS 970. Because EN26 is used at high strength, low sulfur and good cleanliness improve fatigue life, and many buyers order vacuum-degassed steel for critical parts. Residual copper and tin should also be low.

Mechanical Properties
Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of EN26 Round Bar
The values shown are BS 970 tensile and hardness ranges for EN26 in conditions V to Y. Each EN26 condition has a ruling section limit, with other properties set by condition and size.
EN26 reaches high strength in large sections while keeping useful toughness.
The EN26 certificate should list the condition letter, test position and full results. EN26 is usually heat treated to conditions V to Y, with tensile strength from 1000 MPa to 1375 MPa. Each condition has a limiting ruling section, and the deep hardenability of EN26 allows these conditions in larger sections than EN24. Yield strength, elongation and impact values also apply, and toughness falls as strength rises. For heavily loaded gears and shafts, fatigue strength is often the design limit, so surface finish, residual stress and nitriding should be considered. Ask the mill for full test results at the actual section.
Condition V gives 1000–1150 MPa and about 293–352 HB, while condition Y gives 1225–1375 MPa and about 363–429 HB. Impact tests at the service temperature are worth ordering for parts in cold service. Shot peening helps fatigue life.
