Product Description for Alloy Steel 35CrMoV Round Bar

Alloy Steel 35CrMoV Round Bar is a chromium-molybdenum-vanadium alloy structural steel to the Chinese standard GB/T 3077. It contains about 0.30–0.38% carbon, 1.00–1.30% chromium, 0.20–0.30% molybdenum and 0.10–0.20% vanadium.

Vanadium forms fine carbides that refine grain size and raise strength and resistance to softening at temperature. Combined with chromium and molybdenum, this gives high strength and good toughness after quenching and tempering, and useful strength at moderately high temperatures.

The grade is used for heavily loaded parts in machinery, power generation and pressure equipment. It has good hardenability for medium sections and good resistance to temper embrittlement.

Bars are supplied hot rolled or forged, in annealed or quenched and tempered condition. 35CrMoV bars are usually peeled or turned before machining.

Common applications include high-strength shafts, turbine rotor parts, gears, high-pressure vessel parts, bolts and studs for elevated temperature, and other heavy-duty components. No direct equivalent has been identified in ASTM, EN or JIS standards, so buyers outside China should order to GB/T 3077 or agree the chemistry and properties with the mill. The vanadium addition sets 35CrMoV apart from 35CrMo. It refines the grain and resists softening, so the steel suits highly stressed parts that run warm, such as compressor shafts and blower rotors. Service temperatures up to about 500°C are commonly quoted, with the real limit set by creep data. Drawings for equipment built to Chinese standards call it by name. Bars above about 100 mm are normally forged, and buyers should agree test positions for large shafts, because the core will not match the 25 mm test-blank values.

Common Applications of Alloy Steel 35CrMoV Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Alloy Steel 35CrMoV Round Bar is ordered to GB/T 3077. Rolled 35CrMoV bars follow GB/T 702 tolerances, and forged bars follow GB/T 908.

The standard mechanical properties are measured on a 25 mm test blank after quenching at about 900°C in oil and tempering at about 630°C. Large 35CrMoV shafts will test lower than the 25 mm blank.

Bars are usually supplied annealed for machining, with a maximum hardness set by the standard, or quenched and tempered.

Because 35CrMoV has a high carbon equivalent, welds need preheat and post-weld heat treatment. Physical data for 35CrMoV are reference values. Ultrasonic testing and third-party inspection of 35CrMoV bars are available.

35CrMoV has no direct equivalent in EN, ASTM or JIS standards. The nearest grades in use are Cr-Mo-V steels such as 21CrMoV5-7 for bolting and some rotor forging grades, but their chemistry and properties differ. For export orders, state GB/T 3077 and the quality level, and include the Chinese grade number on the certificate. Heat treatment on the 25 mm test blank uses a high quenching temperature of about 900°C, which is needed to dissolve the vanadium carbides. For large forged shafts, add ultrasonic testing, grain size and impact tests at agreed positions, because properties in thick sections will be lower than the test-blank values.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for 35CrMoV Round Bar

The table shows the GB/T 3077 limits for 35CrMoV in the high-quality grade. Tighter phosphorus and sulfur limits apply to A and E grades if ordered.

Carbon at 0.30–0.38% gives high strength after hardening. Chromium at 1.00–1.30% raises hardenability and resistance to softening.

Molybdenum at 0.20–0.30% improves hardenability, creep strength and resistance to temper embrittlement. Vanadium at 0.10–0.20% forms fine, stable carbides that refine grain size and increase strength and tempering resistance.

Silicon in 35CrMoV deoxidises the melt. Phosphorus and sulfur are kept low to protect toughness. Vanadium at 0.10–0.20% is the key element. It forms fine vanadium carbides and carbonitrides that pin grain boundaries during heating, so the steel keeps a fine grain even at the high austenitising temperature of about 900°C. These carbides also resist coarsening during tempering at about 630°C, which is why strength stays high after tempering and at service temperatures. Chromium at 1.00–1.30% is a little higher than in 35CrMo and adds hardenability and resistance to oxidation. Molybdenum at 0.20–0.30% is also higher than in 35CrMo, which improves creep strength. Manganese at 0.40–0.70% is kept moderate. Together, these elements give a steel that holds strength better than Cr-Mo grades without vanadium.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of 35CrMoV Round Bar

The values shown are GB/T 3077 minimum requirements for 35CrMoV on a 25 mm test blank after quenching at about 900°C in oil and tempering at about 630°C. The 35CrMoV impact value uses the GB/T U-notch (KU2) specimen.

The steel reaches very high strength with good toughness. Vanadium keeps strength high after tempering and helps at moderately high service temperatures.

In the annealed condition, hardness is limited to 241 HBW for machining. Properties in large sections are lower, so the required values should be agreed for the actual size. GB/T 3077 requires 35CrMoV to reach tensile strength of at least 1080 MPa, lower yield strength of at least 930 MPa, elongation of at least 10%, reduction of area of at least 50% and U-notch impact energy of at least 71 J on the 25 mm test blank. These are among the highest strength values in the Cr-Mo steel group. For shafts at elevated temperature, room-temperature strength is only a starting point. Designers should use creep and stress-relaxation data at the service temperature. Hardness checks along large shafts help confirm even heat treatment.

Temper embrittlement can occur in slow cooling from tempering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Alloy Steel 35CrMoV Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Choose 35CrMoV over 35CrMo when a highly stressed part needs higher strength and better resistance to softening at moderate temperatures. The vanadium addition refines the grain and forms stable carbides. It is used for turbine rotors, high-stress shafts and heavy machine parts that run warm. It costs more, so use it only when heat is involved.
35CrMoV adds 0.10–0.20% vanadium and has slightly higher chromium and molybdenum. The vanadium refines the grain and resists softening during tempering and service at moderately high temperatures. As a result, 35CrMoV reaches higher strength than 35CrMo on the standard test blank and keeps its strength better at up to about 500°C. It also costs more and is less widely stocked.
There is no direct equivalent in EN, ASTM or JIS standards. Some European Cr-Mo-V steels, such as 21CrMoV5-7, are used for similar high-temperature bolting, but their chemistry and properties are different. If a drawing specifies 35CrMoV, buy it to GB/T 3077. Any substitution needs engineering approval based on properties at the service temperature.
Vanadium carbides dissolve only at higher temperatures. Quenching from about 900°C puts enough carbon and alloy into solution to give full hardness, while the vanadium that stays undissolved keeps the grain fine. Using a lower temperature, such as the 850°C used for many Cr-Mo steels, can leave the steel under-hardened after quenching.
Harden 35CrMoV by quenching from about 900°C in oil and tempering at about 630°C, which is the GB/T 3077 test condition. Welding is difficult because of its carbon and alloy content, and needs preheat, low-hydrogen consumables and post-weld heat treatment. Machine in the annealed condition, limited to 241 HB maximum. Annealed bar is limited to 241 HBW.
No direct ASTM, EN or JIS equivalent exists for 35CrMoV, so it is mainly sourced from Chinese mills and must be ordered to GB/T 3077. It has no corrosion resistance and is not designed for creep service at high temperatures. Large sections may not reach full properties at the centre. Stock is limited outside China.
