Product Description for Alloy Steel EN19 Round Bar
Alloy Steel EN19 Round Bar is a chromium-molybdenum high-tensile steel known in the British system as EN19 and in BS 970 as 709M40. It contains about 0.36–0.44% carbon, 0.90–1.20% chromium and 0.25–0.35% molybdenum. Its closest European grade is 42CrMo4 (1.7225) to EN 10083-3, and the nearest American grade is AISI 4140.
EN19 is usually supplied hardened and tempered to one of the BS 970 tensile conditions, most often condition T (850–1000 MPa). It combines good tensile strength with good ductility and shock resistance, and it has good wear resistance.
The grade can be further surface hardened by induction or nitriding to give a hard, wear-resistant surface. It machines well in the annealed or lower tensile conditions.
EN19 bars come hot rolled, forged, peeled or turned, either annealed or hardened and tempered. The designation EN19T is often used for condition T material.
Common applications include shafts, axles, gears, spindles, studs, bolts, propeller shafts, connecting rods and general engineering parts. BS 970 has been withdrawn and replaced by EN standards, but EN19 remains a common trade name in the UK, India and many export markets. For buyers, the most useful point about EN19 is that each tensile condition is only guaranteed up to a limiting ruling section. UK stockists commonly quote condition T up to about 100 mm, with higher conditions available only in smaller sizes. Pre-hardened EN19T bar is popular because it can be machined straight into finished parts without further heat treatment. Bright EN19T bars in close tolerance are also stocked for precision turned parts.
Common Applications of Alloy Steel EN19 Round Bar
➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.
➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.
➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.
➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Technical Specifications

EN19 Round Bar is ordered to BS 970 as 709M40, usually in a named tensile condition such as T. Because BS 970 is withdrawn, many buyers now order to EN 10083-3 as 42CrMo4 +QT with equivalent strength. EN19 orders should name either BS 970 709M40 or EN 10083-3 42CrMo4 as the governing document.
Hardening is normally done from about 830–860°C with oil quenching, followed by tempering at about 550–700°C to reach the required condition.
BS 970 tensile conditions apply up to a limiting ruling section. Larger sections may not reach the higher conditions.
EN19 has a high carbon equivalent, so any weld needs preheat and post-weld heat treatment. EN19 bars can be ultrasonically tested and third-party inspected on request.
Most EN19 is stocked in condition T, and many workshops treat EN19T as the default. When ordering, state the tensile condition letter, the bar size and whether the certificate should show BS 970 709M40 or EN 10083-3 42CrMo4. If the finished part is much smaller than the stock bar, the strength at the part surface may differ from the test result at the bar quarter-diameter. For nitrided parts, temper above the nitriding temperature so the core does not soften during nitriding. Ultrasonic testing is often added for bars above about 100 mm.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for EN19 Round Bar
The table shows BS 970 limits for 709M40 (EN19). The nearest EN grade, 42CrMo4, has slightly different manganese, molybdenum, phosphorus and sulfur ranges.
Carbon at 0.36–0.44% gives high strength after hardening. Chromium at 0.90–1.20% raises hardenability and wear resistance.
Molybdenum at 0.25–0.35% improves hardenability, strength after tempering and resistance to temper embrittlement.
Manganese adds hardenability and helps deoxidation. Silicon is a deoxidiser. The chemistry of 709M40 differs from 42CrMo4 in small but useful ways. Manganese is set at 0.70–1.00%, a little higher than in 42CrMo4, and molybdenum at 0.25–0.35% is at the upper end of the 42CrMo4 range. Both help hardenability and resistance to softening. Silicon is 0.10–0.35%. Because the two grades overlap strongly, many mills produce heats that meet both 709M40 and 42CrMo4, and dual certification is common. The certificate should show the actual heat analysis so the buyer can confirm both sets of limits. Sulfur-bearing versions for free machining are also produced.
Phosphorus and sulfur are held low to protect toughness and fatigue strength. For bolts and highly stressed shafts, the actual sulfur level on the certificate is worth checking, because high sulfur lowers transverse toughness.

Mechanical Properties
Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of EN19 Round Bar
The values shown are BS 970 tensile and hardness ranges for EN19 in the hardened and tempered conditions R to V. Each EN19 condition is limited to a ruling section, and its yield, elongation and impact minimums change with condition and size.
Condition T (850–1000 MPa, 248–302 HB) is the most common supply condition and gives a good mix of strength, toughness and machinability. Higher conditions give more strength but less ductility.
For design, use the values for the ordered condition and section size, and confirm results on the mill certificate. BS 970 gives EN19 tensile ranges rather than simple minimums, so both under-strength and over-strength bar can be rejected. Condition T means 850–1000 MPa tensile strength and about 248–302 HB. Condition R (700–850 MPa) suits parts that need maximum toughness or easy machining, while conditions U and V give higher strength in smaller sections. Yield strength, elongation and Izod or Charpy impact minimums also apply to each condition and ruling section, and they should be read from the standard or the mill certificate. For shafts, fatigue strength follows tensile strength, so the condition should be chosen from the design stress.
