Product Description for Alloy Steel 35CrMo4 Round Bar

Alloy Steel 35CrMo4 Round Bar is a medium-carbon chromium-molybdenum steel for quenching and tempering. The name 35CrMo4 is a former and national designation for this steel type. In current European standards the standardised grade is 34CrMo4 (1.7220) to EN 10083-3, and 35CrMo4 bars are normally supplied to that grade.

The steel contains about 0.30–0.37% carbon, 0.90–1.20% chromium and 0.15–0.30% molybdenum. After quenching and tempering, it gives higher strength than 25CrMo4 and good toughness, with good hardenability in small and medium sections.

Molybdenum in 34CrMo4 adds hardenability and limits temper embrittlement. The grade can be induction hardened or nitrided for extra surface hardness.

35CrMo4 bars, certified as 34CrMo4, come hot rolled or forged in +A, +S or +QT condition. Peeled, turned and cold-drawn 34CrMo4 bars are all stocked. The nearest American grades are AISI 4135 and 4137, and in Japan the matching grade is SCM435.

Common applications include crankshafts, axles, shafts, gears, bolts and studs, connecting rods, pressure vessel parts, gas cylinders and highly stressed automotive and machinery components. Buyers should note that in some German tool steel listings the name 35CrMo4 is also linked to material number 1.2330, so the order should state the standard and material number clearly. The Chinese grade 35CrMo to GB/T 3077 is sold under a similar name but has slightly different limits, so buyers should confirm which standard applies. In strength, the steel sits between 25CrMo4 and 42CrMo4. Its 40 J impact minimum and lower carbon give it better toughness and lower quench-cracking risk than 42CrMo4, which is why cylinder and axle makers often prefer it.

Common Applications of Alloy Steel 35CrMo4 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Technical Specifications

Get the key technical specifications for Alloy Steel 35CrMo4 Round Bar

35CrMo4 Round Bar is normally supplied to EN 10083-3 as 34CrMo4 (1.7220). The order should state the standard, material number, delivery condition and ruling section to avoid confusion with other uses of the 35CrMo4 name.

Hardening is usually done from about 830–870°C with oil or water quenching, followed by tempering at about 540–680°C. The soft annealed condition is used for machining before heat treatment.

EN 10083-3 properties depend on bar diameter. Axle and crankshaft bars of 34CrMo4 are usually ultrasonically tested.

The carbon equivalent is fairly high, so welding needs preheat and post-weld heat treatment. Physical data for 34CrMo4 are reference values.

If the enquiry names 35CrMo4 without a standard, ask the customer whether they mean 34CrMo4 to EN 10083-3, 35CrMo to GB/T 3077, or a customer specification. The chemistry of these grades overlaps, but mechanical requirements and test methods differ. For example, GB/T 3077 tests a 25 mm blank and uses U-notch impact tests, while EN 10083-3 uses V-notch tests on the delivered bar size. EN 10083-3 gives 34CrMo4 +QT properties up to 250 mm. For bright bar, EN 10277 tolerances apply. Record the standard and material number on every certificate and bar tag.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for 35CrMo4 Round Bar

The table shows the EN 10083-3 limits for 34CrMo4 (1.7220), the standardised grade used to supply 35CrMo4 bars.

Carbon at 0.30–0.37% gives high strength after hardening while keeping good toughness. Chromium at 0.90–1.20% raises hardenability and adds some wear resistance.

Molybdenum at 0.15–0.30% improves hardenability, strength after tempering and resistance to temper embrittlement.

Manganese in 34CrMo4 adds hardenability and deoxidises the steel. A controlled sulfur version, 34CrMoS4, is available for better machinability. Compared with 42CrMo4, 34CrMo4 has about 0.07% less carbon. This lowers the maximum hardness after quenching but improves toughness and reduces the risk of quench cracking in complex parts. Manganese at 0.60–0.90% and silicon up to 0.40% are the same as in 42CrMo4, so hardenability is only slightly lower. The Chinese grade 35CrMo has carbon of 0.32–0.40% and chromium of 0.80–1.10%, which overlaps with 34CrMo4 but is not identical. The Japanese grade SCM435 and American AISI 4135 are close relatives. A certificate should show the exact limits of the ordered standard, not a mix of several.

Phosphorus is limited to 0.025% and sulfur to 0.035%. For gas cylinder use, the cylinder standard often sets even lower limits.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of 35CrMo4 Round Bar

The values shown are EN 10083-3 requirements for 34CrMo4 in the quenched and tempered (+QT) condition. Strength falls as diameter rises, while elongation, reduction of area and impact energy rise.

The grade gives high strength with good toughness in small and medium sections. For very large sections, nickel-bearing grades such as 34CrNiMo6 are often preferred.

In the soft annealed condition, hardness is limited to 223 HB for machining. Use the values for the actual ruling section and confirm them on the mill certificate. EN 10083-3 sets +QT minimum yield strength for 34CrMo4 at 800 MPa up to 16 mm, 650 MPa for 16–40 mm, 550 MPa for 40–100 mm, 500 MPa for 100–160 mm and 450 MPa for 160–250 mm, with tensile strength ranges for each band. The minimum impact energy of 40 J is between the values for 42CrMo4 and 25CrMo4. This balance of strength and toughness makes the grade a common choice for gas cylinders, axles and high-strength bolts, where both properties matter.

For bolts, hardness is often capped to reduce the risk of hydrogen cracking. Impact tests at low temperature can be added for cold-climate parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Alloy Steel 35CrMo4 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
35CrMo4 is today standardised as 34CrMo4 (1.7220) in EN 10083-3. Choose it when you need good strength and toughness with slightly better weldability and toughness than 42CrMo4. Choose 42CrMo4 when higher strength or surface hardness after induction hardening is needed. It also has a higher impact requirement, 40 J against 35 J for 42CrMo4, and a lower risk of quench cracking in complex shapes.
In European practice, yes. 35CrMo4 is a trade name, and the standard grade in EN 10083-3 is 34CrMo4 with material number 1.7220. Bars sold as 35CrMo4 in Europe are normally made and certified as 34CrMo4. Always check that the certificate states EN 10083-3 and 1.7220, rather than only the trade name.
Not exactly. Chinese 35CrMo to GB/T 3077 has carbon of 0.32–0.40% and chromium of 0.80–1.10%, while 34CrMo4 has carbon of 0.30–0.37% and chromium of 0.90–1.20%. Many heats meet both, but the mechanical test methods differ. If a drawing specifies one standard, order that standard, or ask the mill for dual certification.
Yes. 34CrMo4 is one of the most common steels for seamless high-pressure gas cylinders, because it combines high strength with good toughness after quenching and tempering. Cylinder steel is usually bought to the cylinder standard, such as ISO 9809-1, which adds its own chemistry and test limits. Round bar for cylinder parts should be checked against that standard.
Harden 34CrMo4 by austenitising at about 830–870°C, quenching in oil or water and tempering at about 540–680°C. Welding needs preheat and low-hydrogen consumables, and stress relief is advised for thick sections. Order +A condition for easiest machining, or +QT when the part will be used without further heat treatment. Soft annealed bar is limited to 223 HB.
Hardenability limits 34CrMo4 to small and medium sections, and strength falls in large diameters. It should not be used where high surface hardness is essential unless it is induction hardened. It has no corrosion resistance, and high-strength parts must be protected against hydrogen embrittlement. Confusion between EN, GB/T and trade names is a real risk, so name the standard on every order.
