Product Description for Alloy Steel 12Cr1MoV Round Bar

Alloy Steel 12Cr1MoV Round Bar is a low-carbon chromium-molybdenum-vanadium heat-resistant steel to the Chinese standard GB/T 3077. It contains about 0.08–0.15% carbon, 0.90–1.20% chromium, 0.25–0.35% molybdenum and 0.15–0.30% vanadium.

The grade is a pearlitic creep-resistant steel. Chromium, molybdenum and vanadium together give good creep strength and resistance to oxidation at elevated temperatures, usually up to about 540–580°C in steam service. The low carbon content gives good weldability and toughness.

The same steel type is widely used for boiler tubes and headers under the name 12Cr1MoVG in GB/T 5310. Round bars are used for forgings, flanges, fittings and machined parts in the same systems.

Bars are supplied hot rolled or forged, usually normalised and tempered. Forged 12Cr1MoV bars are often rough turned to remove scale.

Common applications include superheater and reheater parts, steam pipe fittings, flanges, valve parts, headers, fasteners and forgings for power plant boilers and petrochemical heaters. The nearest European grade is 14MoV6-3 (1.7715), which has lower chromium and higher molybdenum, so it is not a direct equivalent. It is one of the standard creep-resistant steels in Chinese power plant practice, used for parts at metal temperatures of about 540–580°C. Low carbon gives good weldability and toughness, while vanadium carbides give long-term structural stability. Many orders add elevated-temperature tensile tests. For bolts and studs, the steel must hold its clamp load for long periods, so relaxation data should be checked. Fittings welded to 12Cr1MoVG boiler tubes are usually ordered in this grade, so tube and fitting respond alike to post-weld heat treatment.

Common Applications of Alloy Steel 12Cr1MoV Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Alloy Steel 12Cr1MoV Round Bar is ordered to GB/T 3077, with bar tolerances in GB/T 702 or GB/T 908. For boiler tube systems, the tube version is 12Cr1MoVG to GB/T 5310.

The standard mechanical properties are measured on a 30 mm test blank after normalising at about 970°C with air cooling and tempering at about 750°C with air cooling. This normalised and tempered condition gives the best creep resistance.

The low carbon equivalent gives good weldability, although preheat and post-weld heat treatment are normally used for pressure parts.

Physical data for 12Cr1MoV are reference values for creep-resistant low-alloy steel. For pressure service, additional tests such as elevated temperature tensile tests, UT and third-party inspection are often ordered.

The bar grade 12Cr1MoV in GB/T 3077 and the boiler tube grade 12Cr1MoVG in GB/T 5310 share almost the same chemistry, but they are covered by different standards with different tests. Fittings and forgings that are welded to 12Cr1MoVG tubes are often ordered with extra requirements taken from the tube standard, such as tighter residual element limits and high-temperature yield strength. There is no direct EN or ASTM equivalent. The nearest European grade is 14MoV6-3 (1.7715), which has lower chromium. For export, keep the GB/T designation on the certificate and agree any additional tests before production.

Chemical Composition

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for 12Cr1MoV Round Bar

The table shows the GB/T 3077 limits for 12Cr1MoV in the high-quality grade.

Carbon is kept at 0.08–0.15% for good weldability and toughness. Chromium at 0.90–1.20% improves oxidation resistance and structural stability at temperature.

Molybdenum at 0.25–0.35% strengthens the ferrite and raises creep strength. Vanadium at 0.15–0.30% forms fine, stable carbides that resist coarsening at service temperature, which gives long-term creep resistance.

Silicon and manganese in 12Cr1MoV serve as deoxidisers. Phosphorus and sulfur are kept low to protect toughness and weld quality. Vanadium carbides are the key to long-term creep strength. At service temperatures of about 540–580°C, ordinary iron and chromium carbides slowly coarsen, and the steel loses strength over thousands of hours. Vanadium carbides are much more stable, so they keep holding the structure together for a long time. Molybdenum at 0.25–0.35% dissolves in the ferrite and slows down creep. Chromium at 0.90–1.20% improves resistance to steam oxidation and helps keep carbides stable. Manganese at 0.40–0.70% and silicon at 0.17–0.37% deoxidise the steel. Low carbon also means the steel is less likely to crack in the heat-affected zone after welding. Residual copper and nickel should be kept low for creep service.

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of 12Cr1MoV Round Bar

The values shown are GB/T 3077 minimum requirements for 12Cr1MoV on a 30 mm test blank after normalising at about 970°C and tempering at about 750°C. The 71 J impact value for 12Cr1MoV is a KU2 U-notch result.

The grade has moderate room-temperature strength and high toughness. Its main value is creep strength at elevated temperature, which should be taken from creep data rather than room-temperature tests.

In the delivery condition, hardness is limited to 179 HBW. For pressure parts, buyers should also specify elevated temperature properties where needed. GB/T 3077 requires 12Cr1MoV to reach tensile strength of at least 490 MPa, lower yield strength of at least 245 MPa, elongation of at least 22%, reduction of area of at least 50% and U-notch impact energy of at least 71 J on the 30 mm test blank. These room-temperature values are much lower than for quenched and tempered steels, because the grade is designed for creep resistance, not maximum strength. For pressure design, use the allowable stresses in the relevant Chinese boiler or pressure vessel code, which are based on creep rupture data at the service temperature. Hardness checks after welding and post-weld heat treatment help confirm that weld zones are not too hard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Alloy Steel 12Cr1MoV Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Choose 12Cr1MoV over 15CrMo when the part must resist creep at higher steam temperatures, up to about 580°C. Vanadium forms fine stable carbides that raise creep strength. It is widely used in Chinese boiler and power-plant supply chains for superheater, header and steam-pipe parts. Its vanadium gives better long-term creep strength than 15CrMo at 540–580°C.
12Cr1MoV is commonly used for boiler and piping parts at metal temperatures up to about 540–580°C, depending on stress and the design code. Above this range, creep strength and oxidation resistance fall, and higher-alloy steels such as 10Cr9Mo1VNbN (P91 type) are used instead. Always take the allowable stress from the relevant pressure code, not from room-temperature tests.
12Cr1MoV is the bar and general structural grade in GB/T 3077. 12Cr1MoVG is the boiler tube grade in GB/T 5310. Their chemistry is almost the same, but the tube grade has its own tests for pressure service, such as flattening, flaring and high-temperature properties. Fittings for 12Cr1MoVG tubes are often ordered as 12Cr1MoV bar or forgings with extra tests.
No direct equivalent exists in EN or ASTM standards. The European grade 14MoV6-3 (1.7715) is the closest in design, but it has lower chromium. ASTM grades such as P11 or P22 are Cr-Mo steels without vanadium. For substitution in pressure parts, the design code and the approving authority must accept the replacement grade.
Supply 12Cr1MoV normalised at about 980°C and tempered at about 750°C, which gives a bainite-ferrite structure. It welds with matching Cr-Mo-V consumables, preheat of about 200–300°C and post-weld heat treatment at about 720–750°C. In the normalised and tempered state, 12Cr1MoV machines like a soft carbon steel. Check weld hardness after post-weld heat treatment. Use matching Cr-Mo-V filler metal.
Above about 580°C, 12Cr1MoV loses creep strength and oxidation resistance, so higher-alloy steels such as P91 are needed. It is not a direct equivalent to 14MoV6-3 or ASTM grades, so code approval must be checked. It is not corrosion resistant in wet service. Its room-temperature strength is modest, so it is not used for high-strength machine parts.
