Product Description for Alloy Steel EN36 Round Bar

Alloy Steel EN36 Round Bar is a nickel-chromium case-hardening steel known in the British system as EN36 and in BS 970 as 655M13. It contains about 0.12–0.18% carbon, 3.00–3.75% nickel and 0.60–1.10% chromium. Its nearest European grade is 15NiCr13 (1.5752).

EN36 is carburised to give a very hard, wear-resistant surface with a strong, tough core. The high nickel content gives excellent core toughness and good hardenability.

The steel is used where parts must resist heavy loads, shock and wear at the same time. It machines well and can be welded in the annealed condition.

Bars are supplied hot rolled, forged, peeled or turned, usually annealed.

Common applications include heavy-duty gears, shafts, crankshafts, camshafts, couplings and aerospace and automotive parts. Nearest international grades include SAE 3310 and 9310 and JIS SNC815. The old BS 970 system split EN36 into EN36A, EN36B and EN36C, with slightly different carbon and chromium ranges. Today the 655M13 grade, often sold as EN36B, is the most widely stocked. It is chosen for gears and shafts in aircraft, helicopters, racing cars and heavy transmissions, where the part must carry high loads and shocks without the core cracking. Bright drawn bars are also stocked for small gears and pins, and the double-quench route gives the finest core. Because of its high nickel, EN36 costs more than Mn-Cr case-hardening steels, so it is used where core toughness is worth the extra cost. Stock is widely held in the UK and India. Cut pieces and forged blanks can be supplied for gear makers.

Common Applications of Alloy Steel EN36 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Get the key technical specifications for Alloy Steel EN36 Round Bar

EN36 Round Bar is ordered to BS 970 as 655M13. As BS 970 is withdrawn, many buyers now order 15NiCr13 (1.5752) to EN 10084.

Carburising is done at about 880–930°C, followed by quenching and tempering at about 150–200°C.

Bars are supplied annealed for machining.

The carbon equivalent is moderate, so welding before carburising is possible with preheat.

A common heat treatment route for EN36 is to carburise at about 880–930°C, cool, refine the core at about 850–880°C, then harden the case at about 760–780°C with an oil quench, followed by tempering at about 150–200°C. This double treatment gives a fine core structure and a hard case. Single-quench cycles are also used, but they give a coarser structure. The order should state case depth, surface hardness, core hardness and any grain size or cleanliness limits. For aerospace work, buyers often order to a customer specification that adds vacuum degassing and inclusion limits.

Annealed bar is limited to about 255 HB for machining. Welding before carburising is possible with preheat, but welds should not cross areas that will be carburised. Bright bars are held to h9–h11.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for EN36 Round Bar

The table shows the limits published for EN36 (655M13) by UK mills, including a residual molybdenum limit of 0.15%. Check the ordered standard for exact limits.

Carbon at 0.12–0.18% keeps the core tough, while carburising raises surface carbon for a hard case.

Nickel at 3.00–3.75% gives excellent core toughness and hardenability. Chromium at 0.60–1.10% adds hardenability and wear resistance.

In EN36, manganese and silicon deoxidise the steel and add a little hardenability. With about 3% nickel, EN36 has one of the highest nickel levels among common case-hardening steels. Nickel gives the core its excellent toughness and resistance to shock, and it keeps the case less brittle than in plain carbon or Mn-Cr steels. Chromium adds hardenability and helps the case reach full hardness. The low carbon keeps the core ductile. The chemistry is close to the European 15NiCr13 (1.5752) to EN 10084, which has nickel of 3.00–3.50%, and to JIS SNC815. Molybdenum is only a residual, so the steel is not a direct substitute for Ni-Cr-Mo grades such as 18CrNiMo7-6 or SAE 9310.

Phosphorus and sulfur should be kept low for fatigue-critical gears.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of EN36 Round Bar

The values shown are reference properties published by UK mills for EN36 in the annealed condition and as core properties of a 30 mm section after carburising and oil hardening. They are for guidance only.

Core strength falls as section size rises, from about 1030–1320 MPa at 11 mm to about 880–1180 MPa at 63 mm. The steel gives high core strength with excellent toughness and a very hard surface.

Specify case depth, surface hardness and core hardness for finished parts. After carburising and hardening, UK mills quote core tensile strength of about 1030–1320 MPa at 11 mm, falling to about 880–1180 MPa at 63 mm, with case hardness of about 58–62 HRC. These are reference figures, not standard minimums. The high core toughness is the main reason to choose EN36 over cheaper Mn-Cr steels. For design, specify the effective case depth to 550 HV or 50 HRC, the surface hardness and the core hardness at a stated position, and test them on a sample from the same heat and furnace load.

Annealed EN36 is soft enough for fast machining.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Alloy Steel EN36 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Choose EN36 for heavy-duty case-hardened gears, pinions and camshafts that need a very tough core. Its higher nickel content, about 3–3.75%, gives better core toughness and hardenability than 8620. For small, lightly loaded parts, 8620 or 16MnCr5 is usually cheaper. 8620 is cheaper and more widely stocked in North America. Both suit gears.
These were sub-grades in the old BS 970 system with slightly different carbon and chromium ranges. EN36B is the one most often matched to BS 970 655M13 and is the most widely stocked. EN36C had higher carbon and chromium for more core strength. When ordering, name 655M13 and the governing specification rather than relying on the sub-grade letter alone.
EN36 (655M13) and 15NiCr13 (1.5752) are close equivalents. Both are 3% nickel-chromium case-hardening steels used for heavy-duty gears and shafts. The chemistry limits differ slightly, especially for nickel and chromium. For most uses, 15NiCr13 to EN 10084 is accepted where drawings name EN36, but confirm with the designer. Many gear makers accept either name.
EN36 combines a hard, wear-resistant carburised case with a very tough core. The high nickel content keeps the core strong and resistant to shock, even in thin gear teeth. This makes it suitable for aircraft, helicopter and motorsport transmission gears that carry high loads and sudden shocks. It is also used in heavy truck axles.
Carburise EN36 at about 880–930°C, then harden and temper at about 150–200°C for a case hardness of about 58–62 HRC. Machine it in the annealed condition before carburising. Welding is possible with preheat and low-hydrogen consumables, but should be done before case hardening and not on the hardened case. Use preheat for any welding before carburising.
EN36 is costly because of its nickel content, so it may be over-specified for small parts. BS 970 is withdrawn, so buyers should confirm whether bars are certified to 655M13 or 15NiCr13. It has no corrosion resistance and needs oil or coating in wet service. Its cost is higher than Mn-Cr grades.
