Product Description for Stainless Steel 310H Round Bar

Stainless Steel 310H Round Bar is an austenitic chromium-nickel grade sold as UNS S31009 and W.Nr. 1.4845. The bar standard is ASTM A479 / A479M. Dimensional and surface requirements sit in ASTM A484 / A484M. EN list an equivalent grade. JIS, GB/T and KS do not.

The grade is the controlled-carbon variant of 310, with carbon between 0.04% and 0.10% and a specified coarse grain size, combined with 24-26% chromium and 19-22% nickel. The carbon minimum raises creep-rupture strength for pressure-retaining service above 525 C, while the high chromium and nickel deliver oxidation resistance to approximately 1150 C.

Stock diameters run from 3 mm to 500 mm, with bigger sections forged against order, and lengths are either random 3 to 6 m or cut to a stated size. Bar is supplied in the solution annealed (Condition A, +AT) condition, and can be hot finished, cold drawn, peeled, turned, ground or polished. The grade cannot be hardened by heat treatment; higher strength is obtained only through cold working.

Typical parts are pressure-retaining hot-service components, furnace structural members and machined parts, ordered by the power generation, refining, petrochemical and heat-treatment plant construction industries. Documentation is usually an EN 10204 3.1 certificate listing the heat analysis, the mechanical test results and the condition supplied. Third party inspection, positive material identification and non-destructive examination can be added at order stage. The melting range is roughly 1400 – 1450 C. In the annealed condition the steel is non-magnetic, though cold work can leave it slightly magnetic. Density is around 7.90 g/cm3 and the modulus of elasticity about 200 GPa.

Common Applications of Stainless Steel 310H Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Buyers specify ASTM A479 / A479M for the material and ASTM A484 / A484M for dimensions and surface. In Europe the same steel is called 1.4845 (X8CrNi25-21). The ordered standard and condition should appear on the order and on the certificate.

Solution treatment is performed at approximately 1050-1150 C with rapid cooling, and ASTM A479 requires an austenite grain size of ASTM No. 7 or coarser for the H grade.

Hot finished bar is rolled or forged, then heat treated and pickled. Cold finished bar is drawn, peeled, turned or ground after that. Diameter, out of round, straightness and length tolerances shift with size and finish class, so they are read from the dimensional standard or agreed case by case.

The grade is used where a component must satisfy both ASME elevated-temperature allowable stresses and severe oxidation or carburisation resistance requirements.

The physical properties quoted are typical mill values, not requirements of the standard. Testing is to ASTM A370, with results, analysis, condition and heat number on the certificate. End condition, chamfering, marking and packing are settled at order stage along with the length tolerance.

The narrow carbon band is what separates 310H from 310S. Carbon in the 0.04-0.10% range provides the carbide dispersion needed for creep resistance without the weldability penalty of the 0.25% permitted in 310.

Chromium runs 24.00 to 26.00% here, and it is what makes the steel stainless: it builds the passive oxide film that resists attack. Nickel at 19.00 to 22.00% stabilises the structure and improves ductility and toughness. Beyond those, the standard controls only carbon, manganese, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, chromium and nickel; nothing else is specified. Carbon is held between 0.04 and 0.10%.

The manganese and silicon come from deoxidation and add slight strength. Phosphorus and sulphur are residual elements with low ceilings, because they cost hot workability, weldability and corrosion resistance.

ASTM, EN, JIS, GB/T and KS versions of the grade set slightly different limits. For general work the gap rarely matters; for severe corrosion or hot service it can, so check the heat analysis on the certificate against the standard ordered. Chemical analysis is carried out to ASTM A751. Where the composition table shows no limit for an element, the standard sets no requirement and the element need not be determined or reported.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of SS 310H Round Bar

Ambient minima match the other 310 variants; the grade is chosen on the basis of creep-rupture data and ASME allowable stresses in the intended service range.

The figures apply to solution annealed bar and are checked by tensile testing to ASTM A370 at room temperature. Cold finished bar work hardens while it is drawn or ground, so what arrives is often stronger than the minimum and less ductile than it. Toughness holds up to cryogenic temperatures, with no ductile to brittle transition.

For design, use the specified minima of the standard and condition ordered and take the real numbers from the mill certificate. Section size matters too, since diameter affects cooling rate during heat treatment and how much hot or cold work the bar has seen.

In selection terms, moderate strength combined with very high ductility and toughness favours components that must be formed, welded or extensively machined rather than carry high stress in thin sections. Where greater strength is needed at similar corrosion resistance, cold-worked bar, a duplex grade or a precipitation-hardening grade is normally evaluated instead. Machinability is moderate, and work hardening during cutting should be managed with sharp tooling, positive feed and rigid setups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Stainless Steel 310H Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
It is round bar in austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel grade 310H, which carries the UNS number S31009 and the material number 1.4845 (nearest). Bar is made to ASTM A479 / A479M and supplied in the solution annealed (Condition A, +AT) condition. The grade goes into pressure-retaining hot-service components, furnace structural members and machined parts for the power generation, refining, petrochemical and heat-treatment plant construction industries, and can be had hot finished, cold drawn, peeled, turned, ground or polished depending on the tolerance and surface a part needs.
The material standard is ASTM A479 / A479M, which fixes chemistry, mechanical properties and heat treatment condition. Dimensions, straightness and surface come from ASTM A484 / A484M. In Europe the same steel is specified to EN as 1.4845 (X8CrNi25-21). Testing follows ASTM A370 and certification is normally EN 10204 3.1. Name the standard and the condition on the order.
Recognised equivalents are EN 10095: 1.4845 (X8CrNi25-21) - nearest equivalent, carbon range differs. Where a national standard has no entry for the grade, do not assume a substitute; composition limits vary between standards. On code work, have the design authority confirm any equivalence against the actual heat analysis.
Diameters between 3 mm and 500 mm are normal, and larger sections are forged to order. Cold finished bar is usually 3 mm to 100 mm; hot finished and forged bar 16 mm to 500 mm. Lengths are random 3 to 6 m as standard, with cut lengths available. Tolerances on diameter, straightness and length follow ASTM A484 / A484M or whatever is agreed.
The specified values are Tensile Strength (ASTM A479, annealed) 515 (min) MPa; Yield Strength 0.2% (ASTM A479, annealed) 205 (min) MPa; Elongation in 50 mm (ASTM A479, annealed) 30 (min) %; Reduction of Area (ASTM A479, annealed) 40 (min) %. They relate to the solution annealed (Condition A, +AT) condition and are proved by testing to ASTM A370. Because diameter, finish and heat treatment all move the numbers, design against the minima of the ordered standard and read the certificate for what the heat achieved.
The main alloying elements are C 0.04-0.10%, Cr 24.00-26.00%, Ni 19.00-22.00%, with manganese, silicon, phosphorus and sulphur held to the limits of the governing standard. The narrow carbon band is what separates 310H from 310S. Limits move slightly between the ASTM, EN, JIS and GB/T versions, so check the certified heat analysis against whichever was ordered.
Yes. Bar can go out in random mill lengths, in fixed or cut lengths to an agreed tolerance, or machined to drawing. Finishes cover hot finished and pickled, cold drawn, peeled, rough and smooth turned, centreless ground and polished. Bright and ground bar holds tighter diameter tolerance and gives a better surface for precision machining, while hot finished bar costs less for general fabrication. End condition, chamfering, marking and packing can also be specified.
Grade 310H is specified when a pressure-retaining component operates above approximately 525 C and ASME allowable stresses govern the design. The 0.04% carbon minimum and the required coarse grain size raise creep-rupture strength relative to 310S. Where the part is not pressure-retaining, or where welding and aqueous corrosion resistance matter more than creep strength, 310S remains the practical choice and is stocked in more sizes.
