Hastelloy B Round Bar

Hastelloy Alloy B Round Bar is the first-generation nickel-molybdenum alloy, UNS N10001 (W.Nr. 2.4800), supplied solution annealed to ASTM B335. With about 28% molybdenum, it resists hydrochloric acid at all strengths and temperatures. It is now bought mainly to replace legacy parts in reducing-acid plants, as B-2 and B-3 have taken over new welded designs.

Product Description for Hastelloy B Round Bar

Hastelloy Alloy B Round Bar is made from the original nickel-molybdenum alloy, UNS N10001, known in Germany as 2.4800 (NiMo30). Bar is covered by ASTM B335 and ASME SB335 in the solution annealed condition. Hastelloy is a trademark of Haynes International, and the same chemistry is sold under other mill names.

The alloy was developed in the 1920s for one hard job: handling hydrochloric acid. With 26–30% molybdenum and 4–6% iron in a nickel base, it resists the acid at every concentration up to boiling, as well as hydrogen chloride gas and reducing sulfuric, phosphoric and acetic acid.

Alloy B has two weak points that shaped later grades. First, oxidising species such as ferric ions, cupric ions or air in the acid destroy its passive behaviour and cause fast attack. Second, its carbon and silicon form grain-boundary carbides during welding, so the heat-affected zone can corrode unless the part is solution annealed again.

These limits led to Alloy B-2 and then B-3, which now cover most new equipment. Alloy B bar is still ordered when a legacy drawing, an approved spare-parts list or an old pump or valve design calls for UNS N10001 by name.

Bar is non-magnetic and is offered peeled, turned or ground, cut to length, with EN 10204 3.1 certification. Common parts are pump shafts, impellers, valve stems, bolts and nozzles in hydrochloric acid, chlorinated organics and other reducing-acid service in chemical plants.

Stock is held in common metric and inch diameters, while odd sizes can be made from forged or rolled billet. Buyers replacing old parts should compare the original drawing with current ASTM B335 limits before placing the order.

Common Applications of Hastelloy B Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

ASTM B335 is the governing bar specification for UNS N10001, with ASME SB335 used when the part goes into code pressure equipment. The standard covers rod and bar in the solution annealed condition, and it sets chemistry, tensile tests by size and dimensional tolerances for cold-finished and hot-finished bar.

Solution annealing for Alloy B is done at about 1065–1080°C with a rapid water quench. This puts carbides back into solution and restores full corrosion resistance. Any hot forming, welding or stress relief done later can undo this, so fabricators should plan a final anneal for welded parts.

Density is about 9.2 g/cm³, which is higher than most stainless steels and should be allowed for in weight and cost estimates. The physical values in the table are producer reference data rather than specification limits.

Testing to ASTM B335 covers heat chemistry, tensile tests and dimensions. Because the alloy is often used in severe acid, buyers commonly add ultrasonic testing, PMI on each bar and an intergranular corrosion check when the application is critical.

Hot-finished Alloy B bar comes with a machining allowance, while cold-finished bar is held to closer diameter limits for direct use in shafts and studs.

Chemical Composition

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Hastelloy B Round Bar

The composition table follows ASTM B335 for UNS N10001. The alloy is a simple two-part system: nickel and molybdenum make up almost all of it, with iron and vanadium as deliberate minor additions.

Molybdenum at 26–30% is the element that gives the alloy its value. In reducing acids, molybdenum raises the corrosion resistance of nickel far above any chromium-bearing alloy, which is why Alloy B outperforms stainless steel and even Ni-Cr-Mo grades in hot hydrochloric acid.

Iron at 4–6% and vanadium at 0.2–0.4% were part of the original melting practice and help hot workability. However, the iron level also speeds up the formation of unwanted phases during heating, one reason later grades cut it back.

Carbon up to 0.05% and silicon up to 1.0% are the main weakness. During welding they form molybdenum-rich carbides at grain boundaries, leaving thin zones that the acid can attack. B-2 cut carbon to 0.02% and silicon to 0.10% to solve this.

Chromium is held below 1.0% because it adds little in reducing media. Cobalt, manganese, phosphorus and sulfur are limited as residuals.

Heat analysis appears on the mill certificate, and a check analysis on each lot can be ordered when the part is critical.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Hastelloy B Round Bar

ASTM B335 sets minimum tensile properties for N10001 bar in the solution annealed condition, split by size. Bar from 7.94 mm to 38.1 mm must reach at least 795 MPa tensile strength and 35% elongation. Heavier bar from over 38.1 mm to 88.9 mm must reach at least 690 MPa and 30%. Yield strength of at least 315 MPa applies to all sizes.

The lower values for thicker bar reflect the coarser grain and lower hot reduction in large sections. Designers who use heavy bar for shafts or flanges should base calculations on the minimum for the actual diameter.

The alloy work hardens quickly, so machining feeds and depths of cut should stay constant to avoid cutting a hardened skin. Cold working raises strength but also lowers corrosion resistance and ductility, so parts that are heavily cold formed may need a final anneal.

At high service temperatures the alloy loses ductility if held in the range of about 550–850°C, which is why it is used mainly for aqueous acid service rather than hot structural parts. Actual test results for each heat should be read from the EN 10204 3.1 certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Hastelloy B Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
It is solid bar made from UNS N10001, the original nickel-molybdenum alloy for hydrochloric acid. It contains about 28% molybdenum and 5% iron in a nickel base. Bar is supplied solution annealed to ASTM B335 and is used for shafts, stems, fasteners and fittings in reducing acid service, mainly as replacement parts for older equipment that still names Alloy B.
For new equipment, B-3 is almost always the better choice. It has much lower carbon and silicon, so it can be used as-welded, and its controlled chemistry slows the formation of brittle phases during fabrication. Alloy B should only be ordered when a legacy drawing, certified spare-parts list or approved procedure specifically calls for UNS N10001.
ASTM B335 and its ASME twin SB335 cover rod and bar in UNS N10001. The standard sets chemistry, minimum tensile properties by bar size and dimensional tolerances. The German designation is 2.4800 (NiMo30). Buyers should state the specification edition, bar size, finish and certificate type on the purchase order. ASME SB335 is quoted for code equipment.
Yes, by TIG or MIG with matching Ni-Mo filler such as ERNiMo-1, using low heat input and very clean joints. However, the heat-affected zone forms carbides that lower corrosion resistance, so welded parts should be solution annealed at about 1065°C and water quenched. This extra step is a key reason B-2 and B-3 replaced it.
Oxidising agents are the main danger. Ferric chloride, cupric chloride, nitric acid, chlorine and even dissolved air in hot hydrochloric acid can cause rapid corrosion. Plants using Alloy B must keep oxidising contaminants out of the process stream. Where oxidisers may appear, a Ni-Cr-Mo alloy such as C-276 or C-2000 is safer.
ASTM B335 covers bar from about 7.94 mm up to 88.9 mm for the tensile table, and mills can supply other sizes by agreement. Because the grade is now rare, stock is limited and many sizes are made to order with longer lead times. Bars can be cut to length and supplied turned, peeled or ground.
Most mills stopped regular melting of UNS N10001 once B-2 and B-3 became available, because the newer grades solve its welding and stability problems. As a result, Alloy B is made in small campaigns or supplied from old stock. Buyers should confirm heat, certificate and lead time early and ask whether the engineer will accept B-3 instead.
