Product Description for Haynes 230 Round Bar

Haynes Alloy 230 Round Bar is made from nickel-chromium-tungsten-molybdenum alloy UNS N06230, known in Europe as 2.4733 (NiCr22W14Mo). Bar is supplied to ASTM B572 and ASME SB572 for industrial and pressure use, and to AMS 5891 for aerospace.

The alloy was introduced in the 1980s as an improved high-temperature material. About 14% tungsten and 2% molybdenum give strong solid-solution strengthening, while about 22% chromium gives oxidation resistance. A small lanthanum addition helps the oxide scale stay attached during thermal cycles, which gives long life in parts that heat and cool often.

Its biggest advantage over older alloys is stability. After thousands of hours at high temperature, 230 keeps more of its ductility than alloys such as Hastelloy X, because it forms fewer harmful phases. It also has lower thermal expansion than many heat-resistant alloys, which reduces thermal fatigue.

The alloy resists nitriding and has good resistance to carburising atmospheres. It is approved for ASME Section VIII Division 1 construction at high temperature, which makes it useful in industrial heating and chemical process equipment as well as turbines.

Bar is non-magnetic and supplied turned, peeled or ground, cut to length, with EN 10204 3.1 certification or AMS documentation. It is made into combustor parts, transition ducts, flame holders, furnace rolls, radiant tubes, catalyst grid supports, thermocouple sheaths and high-temperature fasteners.

Its tungsten-rich matrix holds strength well during thousands of hours at heat, and it resists grain growth better than many older alloys. Bar is machined into fasteners, pins, nozzles and fixtures for turbines, furnaces and chemical process heaters. Mill test certificates to EN 10204 3.1 come with each lot.

Common Applications of Haynes 230 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

ASTM B572 and ASME SB572 cover UNS N06230 rod, and the alloy has ASME Section VIII Division 1 allowable stresses at high temperature. For aerospace parts, AMS 5891 governs bar and adds controls on grain size, macrostructure and documentation.

The delivery condition is solution annealed at about 1175–1230°C, followed by rapid cooling. This dissolves most carbides and sets the grain size needed for creep strength. A repeat of this anneal restores 230 parts after severe cold forming.

Density is about 8.97 g/cm³, higher than Hastelloy X because of the tungsten content. Thermal expansion is relatively low for a heat-resistant alloy. Physical data listed for 230 come from Haynes publications.

Standard tests to ASTM B572 cover heat chemistry, tension tests and dimensional checks. AMS 5891 may add stress-rupture testing and grain-size limits. Ultrasonic testing, PMI and third-party inspection are common extras for turbine and pressure parts.

Cold-finished 230 bar is held to close diameter limits for fasteners and pins, while larger sizes are hot finished and turned. Standard mill lengths run from about 2 to 6 metres, and cut pieces can be supplied to the length needed. Straightness and end finish should be agreed when the order is placed.

Chemical Composition

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Alloy 230 Round Bar

The composition table follows ASTM B572 for UNS N06230. Chromium at 20.0–24.0% forms the protective oxide scale in oxidising gases.

Tungsten at 13.0–15.0% is the main strengthening element. As a large atom, it stiffens the nickel matrix and slows creep at high temperature. Molybdenum at 1.0–3.0% adds to this effect. Using mostly tungsten rather than molybdenum gives better strength and stability at the very highest temperatures.

Lanthanum at 0.005–0.050% is a reactive element. In very small amounts, it greatly improves the adhesion of the oxide scale so it does not spall during heating and cooling.

Manganese at 0.30–1.00%, silicon at 0.25–0.75% and aluminium at 0.20–0.50% are set with minimums because they support a protective, well-bonded scale.

Carbon at 0.05–0.15% builds grain-boundary carbides that help 230 resist creep. Boron is limited to 0.015%. Iron and cobalt are capped at 3.0% and 5.0%.

Carbon at 0.05–0.15% forms stable carbides that help creep strength. Manganese at 0.30–1.00%, silicon at 0.25–0.75% and aluminium at 0.20–0.50% support the chromia scale. Iron is limited to 3.0% and cobalt to 5.0%, while boron, phosphorus and sulfur are kept low for weld quality.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Alloy 230 Round Bar

ASTM B572 requires solution annealed N06230 bar to reach at least 758 MPa tensile strength, 310 MPa yield strength and 40% elongation at room temperature. AMS 5891 sets its own minimums for aerospace bar.

The alloy is valued for strength at temperature. It keeps better stress-rupture strength than Hastelloy X across much of the 800–1000°C range, and it is used up to about 1150°C in lightly loaded parts. Design values should come from ASME Section II-D for pressure parts or producer stress-rupture data for turbine parts.

Thermal stability is a key mechanical benefit. After long exposure at 760–870°C, 230 keeps much higher room-temperature elongation than older alloys, which lowers the risk of cracking during shutdown or repair.

Cold work raises strength but reduces creep life, so formed parts are usually annealed before service. Test results are reported on the certificate for each heat.

ASTM B572 sets room-temperature minimums of 758 MPa tensile strength, 310 MPa yield strength and 40% elongation for annealed N06230 bar. Its stress-rupture strength stays useful up to about 1000°C. Unlike Alloy X, it keeps good ductility after long ageing in the 650–870°C range, which suits repair welding of used parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Haynes 230 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
It is solid bar made from UNS N06230, a nickel alloy with about 22% chromium, 14% tungsten and 2% molybdenum, plus a small lanthanum addition. It is supplied solution annealed to ASTM B572 or AMS 5891. It gives high strength, oxidation resistance up to about 1150°C and excellent long-term stability for turbines and furnaces.
Choose Haynes 230 when parts face long service at high temperature and need better stability, oxidation resistance and creep strength. Choose Hastelloy X when lower cost, wider stock and a long aerospace approval history are more important. Many new combustor and furnace designs use 230 for its longer life. Both are sold as solution annealed bar.
Weld Haynes 230 by TIG, MIG or shielded metal arc with matching ERNiCrWMo-1 filler. Preheat is not needed. Use moderate heat input and remove oil, paint and marker ink from the joint area first. Welded parts are normally used without post-weld heat treatment, although a solution anneal can restore properties after heavy forming or long service.
ASTM B572 and ASME SB572 cover rod in UNS N06230, and AMS 5891 covers aerospace bar and forgings. The European material number is 2.4733. The alloy is approved for ASME Section VIII Division 1. Orders should state the correct document, size, tolerance, finish and certificate type. Grain size limits may apply for aerospace.
It is costly because of its high tungsten content, and its density is higher than many heat-resistant alloys. It is a heat-resistant grade, so it should not be selected for wet acid handling. Its room-temperature strength is lower than age-hardened alloys, so it is chosen for heat resistance rather than for cold high-strength parts.
Bar is commonly available from small diameters up to about 150 mm, with larger sizes forged to order. It can be cut to length and turned, peeled or ground. Aerospace buyers should confirm that the mill holds approval for AMS 5891 in the ordered size. Tolerances follow the chosen ASTM or AMS standard.
