Product Description for Haynes 263 Round Bar

Haynes Alloy 263 Round Bar is made from nickel-cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloy UNS N07263, known in Germany as 2.4650 (NiCo20Cr20MoTi). Bar is supplied to AMS 5886 for aerospace use, and the same chemistry is sold as Nimonic 263 by other producers.

The alloy was originally developed in the UK in the 1960s as C-263 to fill a gap. Designers wanted a material stronger than solid-solution alloys but much easier to weld and form than high-strength age-hardenable grades. Alloy 263 achieved this with a modest level of titanium and aluminium, enough to form strengthening gamma prime but not so much that welds crack.

Strength comes from two sources. Cobalt and molybdenum give solid-solution strengthening, while ageing forms fine gamma prime particles. The result is good tensile and creep strength up to about 850°C with good ductility.

About 20% chromium gives good oxidation resistance at its working temperatures. The alloy handles thermal cycling well, which suits parts that heat and cool in each engine run.

Bar is non-magnetic and supplied solution treated, or treated and aged, turned or ground, cut to length, with AMS-compliant documentation. It is made into turbine casings, rings, combustion chamber parts, exhaust ducts, bolts and fittings in aero engines, industrial gas turbines and power plants.

The alloy was first developed in the United Kingdom as C-263 and is sold under several mill names with the same UNS number. It machines and welds well in the solution-treated state and is then aged to full strength. Buyers use it for sheet-metal structures, rings and bolts that must keep strength for long periods at heat. Ultrasonic testing and PMI are often added on aerospace orders.

Common Applications of Haynes 263 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Technical Specifications

Get the key technical specifications for Haynes 263 Round Bar

AMS 5886 is the governing specification for Alloy 263 bar, forgings and rings. The alloy is also covered by other international aerospace specifications. The order should state the specification, delivery condition and whether aged properties must be proven.

Solution treatment is done at about 1150°C with rapid cooling. The standard ageing treatment is about 800°C for 8 hours followed by air cooling. Parts are normally machined and welded in the solution-treated condition and aged afterwards.

Density is about 8.36 g/cm³. Thermal conductivity, expansion and similar table values for 263 are producer figures, not AMS limits.

AMS 5886 requires heat chemistry, tension tests after a test ageing treatment, hardness, grain size and macrostructure checks, with full lot traceability. Ultrasonic testing is common for rotating or critical parts. Buyers should confirm that the mill holds the required aerospace approvals.

Bar is normally shipped solution treated so that it can be machined and welded before ageing. When aged bar is wanted, the order should state it clearly and ask for aged test results on the same lot. Hot-finished bar comes with a machining allowance, and cut lengths are available. Mills should state the heat number, condition and specification on each certificate.

Chemical Composition

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Alloy 263 Round Bar

The composition table follows AMS 5886 for UNS N07263. Titanium at 1.9–2.4% and aluminium at 0.30–0.60% form gamma prime during ageing.

Their combined total is held at 2.4–2.8%. This control is the key to the alloy. It gives enough gamma prime for good strength, but keeps the amount low enough that welds and heat-affected zones do not crack during ageing, a common problem with higher-strength alloys.

Cobalt at 19.0–21.0% raises the temperature at which gamma prime dissolves, and it adds solid-solution strength. Molybdenum at 5.6–6.1% gives further matrix strengthening.

Chromium at 19.0–21.0% provides oxidation resistance. Carbon at 0.04–0.08% forms carbides that support creep strength at grain boundaries. Boron up to 0.005% helps grain-boundary strength.

Iron is limited to 0.7%, and manganese, silicon and copper are controlled as minor elements.

Carbon is held at 0.04–0.08% to form carbides that strengthen grain boundaries. Iron is limited to 0.7%, which is lower than in many nickel alloys. Boron is capped at 0.005% and copper at 0.20%. Manganese and silicon are kept low, and trace elements such as lead and bismuth are tightly controlled because they harm hot ductility.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Alloy 263 Round Bar

The table shows producer reference values for bar after the standard ageing treatment: about 1004 MPa tensile strength, 585 MPa yield strength and 35% elongation. These values are guidance only. Acceptance minimums, hardness limits and test conditions come from AMS 5886.

The alloy keeps useful strength up to about 850°C. Above this, gamma prime starts to dissolve and strength falls, so it is not used for the hottest turbine parts.

Ageing roughly doubles yield strength compared with the solution-treated state. Because ductility stays high, aged parts tolerate thermal cycling and assembly stresses well.

Machining is easiest in the solution-treated condition. Aged material is harder and needs carbide tools and slower speeds. Creep and low cycle fatigue data should come from the producer. Test results after the specified ageing cycle are reported on the certificate.

AMS 5886 sets tensile, yield and elongation limits after a test ageing treatment, along with a hardness range. Reference aged values are about 1004 MPa tensile strength, 585 MPa yield strength and 35% elongation. The alloy keeps useful creep strength up to about 850°C. Solution-treated bar is softer and far easier to form and machine than aged bar, which is why most shaping is done before ageing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Haynes 263 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
It is solid bar made from UNS N07263, an age-hardenable nickel alloy with about 20% cobalt, 20% chromium and 6% molybdenum, plus titanium and aluminium. It is supplied to AMS 5886. It combines good strength up to about 850°C with very good weldability, and it is used for turbine casings, rings and combustion parts.
Choose Haynes 263 when the part must be welded or formed, such as turbine casings and fabricated rings, because it is much easier to weld without cracking. Choose Nimonic 80A for bolts, valves and machined parts where higher strength in some forms matters and welding is not needed. Compare the ordering specifications too.
Bar is solution treated at about 1150°C and rapidly cooled. After machining and welding, parts are aged at about 800°C for 8 hours and air cooled. This forms fine gamma prime particles that raise strength. Welded assemblies should be aged as a whole after welding. Ageing is normally done after welding and machining.
Weld Haynes 263 in the solution-treated condition by TIG with matching filler. Keep joints clean and restraint moderate. Its controlled titanium and aluminium levels give it good resistance to strain-age cracking during post-weld ageing. After welding, the assembly is aged to reach full strength. Ageing follows welding to restore strength in the joint.
It is not used above about 850°C, where strength falls. Wet acid corrosion is outside its design purpose. Its cobalt content raises cost. Bar must be ordered to AMS 5886 through approved mills for aerospace use, which can affect lead time. Above about 850°C, strength falls away, and alloys such as 230 or X may suit better.
Yes. Both names refer to UNS N07263, W.Nr. 2.4650. The alloy was first developed in the UK as C-263 and is sold under different trade names by different mills. For aerospace work, the order should name the specification, such as AMS 5886, rather than the trade name alone. Always check the order specification.
