Product Description for Hastelloy C4 Round Bar
Hastelloy Alloy C-4 Round Bar is made from nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy UNS N06455, known in Germany as 2.4610 (NiMo16Cr16Ti). Bar is supplied to ASTM B574 and ASME SB574 in the solution annealed condition.
C4 was developed in the 1970s with one priority: stability during heating. Standard C276 can form carbides and intermetallic phases if it is held at about 650–1040°C, for example during hot forming, stress relief or slow cooling of thick welds. C4 removes tungsten, keeps iron low, holds carbon and silicon at very low levels and adds titanium to tie up any carbon that is present.
The result is an alloy that can pass through long thermal cycles and still show good ductility and resistance to intergranular attack. This matters for large welded vessels, hot-formed heads and parts that operate at moderate temperature for long periods.
C4 resists a wide range of chemicals, including hot contaminated sulfuric and phosphoric acid, organic acids, chloride solutions, wet chlorine, hypochlorite and seawater. It resists chloride stress corrosion cracking. Its pitting and crevice resistance is good but lower than C-276 and C-22, because it has no tungsten.
C4 bar is non-magnetic and can be supplied peeled, turned or centreless ground, cut to length, with a 3.1 mill certificate. It is used for pump and valve parts, shafts, fasteners and fittings in chemical processing, flue gas desulfurisation, pickling lines and pulp and paper bleach plants.
C4 is also picked for parts that will be welded and placed in service without a final anneal. The low carbon and the titanium addition keep the weld zone free of harmful precipitates in that case.
Common Applications of Hastelloy C4 Round Bar
➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.
➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.
➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.
➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Technical Specifications

ASTM B574 is the rod specification for UNS N06455, and ASME SB574 covers code pressure parts. C4 has ASME Section II-D allowable stresses for Section VIII vessels within the listed temperature range.
Mills solution anneal C4 at about 1065°C and water quench. Because the alloy is stable, it tolerates slower cooling better than C-276, but a fast quench is still the norm for bar. Parts that are hot formed can often be used without a further anneal, which is one of the main reasons for selecting this grade.
Density is about 8.6 g/cm³, lower than C-276 because there is no tungsten. The table shows producer reference values for thermal and electrical properties.
Testing under ASTM B574 includes heat chemistry, tension tests and dimensional checks. Buyers often add an intergranular corrosion test such as ASTM G28 on a sensitised sample, which is a direct check of the thermal stability that C4 is bought for. Ultrasonic testing and PMI are common extras for shafts and pressure parts.
Cold-finished C4 bar suits shafts and fasteners, while larger sizes are hot finished and turned. Bars can be cut to exact lengths and chamfered on request.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Alloy C-4 Round Bar
The composition table follows ASTM B574 for UNS N06455. Chromium at 14.0–18.0% gives resistance to oxidising media, and molybdenum at 14.0–17.0% gives resistance to reducing acids, pitting and crevice attack.
Stability comes from what is kept out as much as what is added. Tungsten is not added at all, because tungsten encourages mu phase at high temperature. Iron is limited to 3.0% and cobalt to 2.0%, both lower than in C-276.
Carbon at 0.015% maximum and silicon at 0.08% maximum keep grain boundaries clean. Titanium up to 0.70% then combines with the small amount of carbon left, forming stable titanium carbides inside the grains rather than chromium or molybdenum carbides at grain boundaries. This is the same idea used in stabilised stainless steels.
Manganese is limited to 1.0%, and phosphorus and sulfur are kept low to protect hot workability and weldability.
Because C4 and C276 look similar on paper, the certificate should be checked for tungsten, which should be absent or very low in C4, and for titanium.
Holding cobalt at 2.0% and iron at 3.0% keeps the C4 matrix clean and stable during long heat exposure.

Mechanical Properties
Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Alloy C-4 Round Bar
ASTM B574 requires solution annealed N06455 bar to reach at least 690 MPa tensile strength, 276 MPa yield strength and 40% elongation. These values are slightly below C276 for yield, as C4 has less solid-solution strengthening from tungsten.
The key mechanical benefit of C4 is retention of ductility after heating. Samples aged for many hours in the 650–1040°C range keep high elongation and impact energy, while C276 can lose a large part of its ductility in the same test. This makes C4 safer for thick weldments, multi-pass repairs and hot-formed parts that are not re-annealed.
Like other Ni-Cr-Mo alloys, C4 work hardens quickly. Cold forming raises strength, and severe cold work may need a follow-up anneal.
For design at temperature, use ASME Section II-D allowable stresses rather than room-temperature minimums. The alloy is not intended for high-temperature structural service. Actual tensile results are reported on the EN 10204 3.1 certificate.
The alloy work-hardens during machining, so sharp tools, steady feed and plenty of coolant are needed. ASME permits C4 in code design up to about 425°C, and higher-temperature use should be checked against producer data. Parts that must keep full corrosion resistance should not be heavily cold worked.
