Product Description for Inconel 725 Round Bar

Inconel 725 Round Bar is made from an age-hardenable nickel-chromium-molybdenum-niobium alloy, UNS N07725. Bars are supplied to ASTM B805, which covers precipitation-hardening nickel alloy bar and wire.

The alloy combines the corrosion resistance of Alloy 625 with high strength from age hardening. It resists hydrogen embrittlement, stress corrosion cracking in sour gas, and pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments.

A yield strength above 827 MPa can be reached by ageing alone, without cold work. This is important for large sections and complex shapes.

Bars are supplied solution treated for machining, or solution treated and aged for direct use. The alloy is non-magnetic.

Common applications include oil and gas hangers, landing nipples, side pocket mandrels, packer bodies, high-strength fasteners, subsea parts and marine components. It is widely used in sour service under NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 with the relevant hardness limits. Alloy 725 was developed for oil and gas completion equipment, where parts must be very strong and also survive hydrogen sulfide, chlorides and high temperature at the same time. Unlike Alloy 718, which relies on a higher iron content, Alloy 725 keeps most of the chemistry of Alloy 625 and adds niobium and titanium for age hardening. Many operators now order it to API Standard 6ACRA, which adds extra requirements for age-hardened nickel alloys used in oilfield equipment, such as impact tests, microstructure checks and tight control of heat treatment. Bars are commonly stocked in diameters used for hangers and nipples, and cut pieces can be supplied aged or solution treated to suit the machining plan.

Common Applications of Inconel 725 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Get the key technical specifications for Inconel 725 Round Bar

Inconel 725 Round Bar is supplied to ASTM B805. The standard gives requirements for the solution treated condition and the capability after ageing.

Solution treatment is at about 1038°C followed by air cooling. Ageing is at about 732°C for 8 hours, furnace cooled to about 621°C, held 8 hours and air cooled.

For sour service, bars are often tested to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 with hardness limits.

Standard testing includes chemical analysis, tensile, hardness and dimensional checks, with impact testing, UT and PMI on request.

For oilfield orders, API Standard 6ACRA is often added to ASTM B805. It covers age-hardened nickel alloys such as 718, 725, 925 and 945X, and sets requirements for melting practice, heat treatment, grain size, microstructure, Charpy impact tests and hardness. Some operators also have their own specifications with narrower strength bands. When ordering, state the full list of documents, the required strength level and whether bars are to be supplied solution treated or aged. For large bars, test positions for tensile, impact and hardness should be agreed, because properties at mid-radius are what matter for thick parts such as hangers and packer bodies.

Chemical Composition

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Alloy 725 Round Bar

The table shows the ASTM B805 limits for UNS N07725.

Chromium at 19–22.5% and molybdenum at 7–9.5% give resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and sour environments, similar to Alloy 625.

Niobium at 2.75–4.00% and titanium at 1.00–1.70% form the strengthening precipitates during ageing.

Carbon is kept very low to avoid carbides that could reduce corrosion resistance. Iron forms the balance. Molybdenum at 7–9.5% and chromium at 19–22.5% are close to the Alloy 625 range. This gives Alloy 725 a pitting resistance equivalent well above 40, much higher than Alloy 718, and good resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion and sour gas cracking. Niobium at 2.75–4.00% and titanium at 1.00–1.70% form the gamma double prime and gamma prime phases during ageing, which give the high strength. Aluminium is limited to 0.35% and carbon to 0.03%, which keeps grain boundaries clean. Nickel at 55–59% gives a stable matrix. Phosphorus and sulfur are held very low to protect hot workability and toughness.

Nickel is held at 55–59%, with iron as the balance, usually about 5–15%. The low iron is part of why Alloy 725 resists hydrogen embrittlement better than 718.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Alloy 725 Round Bar

The solution treated values are ASTM B805 minimum requirements. The aged values show the capability after the standard ageing treatment.

After ageing, the alloy reaches high strength while keeping good ductility and corrosion resistance.

For sour service, hardness must stay within the NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 limit. The Alloy 725 certificate should show the ageing cycle, hardness and tensile results for each lot. ASTM B805 gives Alloy 725 solution treated minimums of 758 MPa tensile strength, 310 MPa yield strength and 30% elongation. After the standard ageing cycle, the alloy reaches at least 827 MPa yield strength and 1034 MPa tensile strength with elongation of at least 20%. The key point for oilfield design is that this strength is reached by ageing alone, so large bars and complex forgings have uniform properties through the section. For sour service, hardness must stay at or below 43 HRC under NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, and heat treatment records should show that the ageing cycle was correctly applied.

Charpy impact tests at low temperature are often added for subsea parts, and API 6ACRA sets minimum impact values for large sections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Inconel 725 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Choose Alloy 725 over 718 for sour oil and gas service, where it gives corrosion resistance close to Alloy 625 together with high strength after ageing. It resists hydrogen embrittlement and stress corrosion cracking better than 718 in wells with high hydrogen sulfide and chlorides. Alloy 718 is cheaper and suits high-strength parts in less corrosive service.
API Standard 6ACRA covers age-hardened nickel alloys for oil and gas drilling and production equipment, including Alloy 725. It adds requirements on melting, heat treatment, grain size, microstructure, impact toughness and hardness beyond the basic ASTM B805 bar standard. Many operators require it for completion equipment. If the end user asks for it, state it on the order.
NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 limits Alloy 725 to a maximum of 43 HRC in the solution treated and aged condition, together with rules on the heat treatment used. Bars must be tested to confirm the hardness limit is met. Exceeding the limit increases the risk of sulfide stress cracking, so certificates should show hardness results for each heat treatment lot.
Yes. Bars can be supplied solution treated for machining or fully aged for direct use. Aged bar is harder and slower to machine, but it avoids distortion from heat treatment after machining. For large or complex parts, many shops rough machine solution-treated bar, age it, then finish machine to size. State the condition clearly on the order.
Alloy 725 is solution treated at about 1040°C and aged at about 730°C for 8 hours, then furnace cooled to about 620°C and held for 8 hours. The ordered specification governs the exact cycle. Rough machining is easiest before ageing. Weld with matching filler, then age the whole part after welding to restore strength in the weld zone.
For sour service, hardness must stay within NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 limits, so heat treatment records must be checked for every lot. Alloy 725 is more costly than 718 and less widely stocked. It is not designed for service above about 650°C, where alloys such as 617 or X perform better.
