Product Description for Carbon Steel A694 F65 Round Bar

Carbon Steel A694 F65 Round Bar is a forged or hot-rolled carbon-manganese bar produced to ASTM A694/A694M, the specification covering carbon and alloy steel forgings for pipe flanges, fittings, valves and parts intended for high-pressure transmission service. The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code designation is SA-694 F65.

The specification is organised around strength grades rather than around distinct chemistries. All grades from F42 to F70 share the same composition limits, with carbon capped at 0.30% and manganese at 1.60%, together with controlled additions of niobium, vanadium and titanium. Grade F65 is defined by a minimum yield strength of 448 MPa (65 ksi) and a minimum tensile strength of 552 MPa (80 ksi). These properties are achieved through a combination of microalloying, controlled rolling or forging, and heat treatment.

Bar is supplied in the normalised, normalised and tempered, or quenched and tempered condition as required to meet the grade. The strength grades of A694 are matched to API 5L line pipe grades, so a flange or fitting machined from F65 bar can be welded to line pipe of similar strength without a change in wall thickness. Low carbon and a controlled carbon equivalent keep the material field weldable.

Round bar and forged billet are commonly available from about 20 mm to 600 mm diameter in random or cut lengths, and are used as machining stock rather than as a structural section.

Principal applications are weld neck, slip-on and blind flanges, anchor flanges, forged fittings, valve bodies, bonnets, closures, tees and reducers for oil and gas transmission pipelines. Industries served include upstream and midstream oil and gas, pipeline construction, refineries, petrochemical plants, LNG terminals and offshore platforms.

Common Applications of Carbon Steel A694 F65 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Technical Specifications

Get the key technical specifications for Carbon Steel A694 F65 Round Bar

Carbon Steel A694 F65 Round Bar is ordered against ASTM A694/A694M, with general requirements for steel forgings supplied by ASTM A788/A788M. Unlike chemistry-based bar standards, A694 fixes the acceptance criteria on mechanical performance: a minimum yield strength of 448 MPa and a minimum tensile strength of 552 MPa for grade F65, with elongation of at least 20 percent and reduction of area of at least 30 percent.

Material is supplied normalised, normalised and tempered, or quenched and tempered, whichever route the manufacturer selects to reach the grade. The heat treatment condition, the austenitising and tempering temperatures, and the section thickness represented by the test material are all recorded on the certificate. Test blanks must be heat treated with the production material and must represent its heaviest section.

Because A694 is a forging specification rather than a bar specification, dimensional tolerance is not taken from a standard size table. Diameter, length, straightness and machining allowance are agreed on the purchase order, with ASTM A788/A788M covering marking, workmanship, repair, retesting and the general quality framework.

Chemical analysis follows ASTM A751 and mechanical testing follows ASTM A370. Ultrasonic examination to ASTM A388 and magnetic particle examination to ASTM E1444 are commonly added for pressure-containing parts. Charpy impact testing is supplementary requirement S5. For wet sour service the order should invoke NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 with a 22 HRC hardness ceiling. Density is about 7.85 – 7.87 g/cm3 and modulus of elasticity approximately 200 – 210 GPa. Certification is normally EN 10204 Type 3.1, with Type 3.2 third-party inspection common on pipeline projects.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for CS A694 F65 Round Bar

ASTM A694/A694M applies a single set of composition limits to every strength grade from F42 to F70. The differences between grades are achieved by microalloying level, forging or rolling practice and heat treatment, not by a change in the specified chemistry envelope. This is why grade F65 carries the same maximum carbon and manganese as the lower grades.

Carbon is capped at 0.30% and phosphorus and sulphur are both held to 0.025% maximum, tighter than in general structural steels. The low carbon ceiling protects field weldability, while the low phosphorus and sulphur improve toughness and through-thickness ductility in thick forged sections. Manganese up to 1.60% is the main strengthening and hardenability element and combines with residual sulphur to prevent hot shortness.

Niobium up to 0.05%, vanadium up to 0.08% and titanium up to 0.02% are the microalloying elements that make the higher strength grades possible. They form fine carbonitrides that pin austenite grain boundaries during hot working and precipitation strengthen the ferrite, raising yield strength without raising carbon. Silicon between 0.15% and 0.35% provides deoxidation.

Residual nickel, chromium, molybdenum and copper are limited to 0.40%, 0.30%, 0.12% and 0.40% respectively, with a total residual restriction applied by the specification. Where the material will see wet sour service, a maximum carbon equivalent and NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 hardness limits should be added to the purchase order.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of CS A694 F65 Round Bar

Grade F65 is defined entirely by its mechanical requirements. ASTM A694/A694M specifies a minimum yield strength of 448 MPa (65 ksi) and a minimum tensile strength of 552 MPa (80 ksi), together with a minimum elongation in 50 mm of 20% and a minimum reduction of area of 30%. These are mandatory acceptance values, not typical figures.

Tension testing is carried out to ASTM A370 on specimens taken from production forgings or from separately forged test blanks that have received the same heat treatment as the production material. The specification requires the test material to represent the heaviest section of the forging, so that the reported properties reflect the slowest cooling rate present in the part.

Charpy V-notch impact testing is not mandatory in the base specification. It is invoked through supplementary requirement S5, where the test temperature and minimum absorbed energy are agreed between purchaser and manufacturer. Low-temperature pipeline and offshore projects almost always invoke it, typically at minus 20 degC or minus 46 degC.

The strength grades are deliberately aligned with API 5L line pipe strength classes, so that a flange or fitting can be matched to the connecting pipe. This avoids a strength mismatch across the girth weld. For wet sour service, a maximum hardness of 22 HRC in accordance with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 is normally added, which may require a lower tempering temperature limit and additional hardness survey testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Carbon Steel A694 F65 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
It is a carbon-manganese forging bar produced to ASTM A694/A694M Grade F65, supplied as machining stock for pipe flanges, fittings, valves and parts used in high-pressure transmission service. Grade F65 is defined by a minimum yield strength of 448 MPa (65 ksi) and a minimum tensile strength of 552 MPa (80 ksi), achieved through microalloying and heat treatment rather than through a distinct chemistry.
The product standard is ASTM A694/A694M, Carbon and Alloy Steel Forgings for Pipe Flanges, Fittings, Valves and Parts for High-Pressure Transmission Service. General forging requirements are covered by ASTM A788/A788M. The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code designation is SA-694 Grade F65. Testing follows ASTM A370 and ASTM A751.
All A694 grades share the same chemical composition limits. They differ only in required strength. Minimum yield strength rises from 290 MPa for F42 through 359 MPa for F52, 414 MPa for F60 and 448 MPa for F65 to 483 MPa for F70, with tensile minimums rising in step. The number in the grade designation is the minimum yield strength in ksi. Higher grades are achieved by increased microalloying and more controlled forging and heat treatment.
No direct equivalent is identified in EN, JIS, GB/T or KS standards, because ASTM A694 defines grades by strength class rather than by chemistry and no national standard mirrors that structure. The closest relationship is with API 5L line pipe, where the strength class of grade F65 corresponds to X65. European pipeline forgings are usually specified to EN 10222-4 or to a project specification instead.
Carbon 0.30% maximum, manganese 1.60% maximum, phosphorus 0.025% maximum, sulphur 0.025% maximum and silicon 0.15 to 0.35%. Residuals are limited to nickel 0.40%, chromium 0.30%, molybdenum 0.12% and copper 0.40%. Microalloying additions are vanadium 0.08% maximum, niobium 0.05% maximum and titanium 0.02% maximum.
Not in the base specification. Impact testing is invoked through supplementary requirement S5, with the test temperature and minimum absorbed energy agreed between purchaser and manufacturer. Pipeline and offshore projects commonly require testing at minus 20 degC or minus 46 degC. The requirement must be stated on the purchase order before the material is heat treated and tested.
It can be, when ordered accordingly. Wet sour service to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 normally requires a maximum hardness of 22 HRC, a controlled maximum carbon equivalent, restricted residual elements and hardness survey testing. These are not part of the base specification and must be added to the purchase order so the manufacturer can select the appropriate heat treatment and testing regime.
Forged and rolled bar is commonly supplied from about 20 mm to 600 mm diameter in random or cut lengths, as forged, hot rolled and descaled, rough turned or machined all over. Because the material is machining stock for forgings rather than a structural section, size and tolerance are normally agreed on the purchase order rather than taken from a standard size table.
