Product Description for Carbon Steel S275JR Round Bar

Carbon Steel S275JR Round Bar is a hot-rolled non-alloy structural steel bar produced to EN 10025-2, the European standard for technical delivery conditions for non-alloy structural steels, carrying Werkstoff number 1.0044. The designation sets a minimum yield strength of 275 MPa for thicknesses or diameters up to 16 mm, together with quality class JR, requiring a Charpy V-notch impact energy of 27 J at plus 20 degC.

The material is supplied in the as-rolled or normalised rolled condition depending on grade and producer practice. It is not heat treated for strength. Strength comes from a combination of carbon and manganese content and controlled rolling, which keeps the carbon equivalent low and preserves weldability.

Chemistry is controlled with carbon at 0.24% maximum, manganese at 1.50% maximum, phosphorus at 0.04% maximum and sulphur at 0.04% maximum for the bar sizes normally supplied. With the carbon equivalent capped at 0.4, shielded metal arc, gas metal arc, flux cored and submerged arc welding all work with standard low-hydrogen consumables and normal preheat practice.

Round bars are commonly available from about 8 mm to 250 mm diameter, with dimensional tolerances to EN 10060. Standard random lengths are 6 metres and cut-to-length supply is widely offered. Surface condition is normally hot rolled or hot rolled and descaled, with turned and peeled bar available where a cleaner surface is needed.

Typical applications include structural frameworks, columns, bracing, anchor bolts and tie rods, bridge and crane components, machinery bases and frames, transmission towers, offshore and marine structures, earthmoving and lifting equipment, and general welded fabrication. Industries served include construction and infrastructure, heavy engineering, shipbuilding, offshore oil and gas, mining equipment and material handling.

Common Applications of Carbon Steel S275JR Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Technical Specifications

Get the key technical specifications for Carbon Steel S275JR Round Bar

Carbon Steel S275JR Round Bar is ordered against EN 10025-2, which is a mechanical performance specification supported by maximum composition limits and a mandatory maximum carbon equivalent. Dimensional tolerances for hot-rolled round bar are taken from EN 10060 rather than from the product standard, and the required tolerance class should be nominated on the order rather than left to mill standard.

The delivery condition is as rolled (+AR) or normalised rolled (+N) depending on producer practice and section size. No strength-developing heat treatment is applied, so properties reflect chemistry, rolling reduction and cooling rate. Minimum yield strength of 275 MPa applies to diameters up to 16 mm and steps down for larger sections, so the size band must be stated on the order.

Impact toughness is the defining feature of the quality suffix. S275JR requires a minimum Charpy V-notch energy of 27 J at +20 degC, tested to EN ISO 148-1 on 10 mm by 10 mm specimens. Tensile testing follows EN ISO 6892-1. The tensile strength requirement is a range of 410-560 MPa rather than a minimum, so material that is too strong is also non-conforming.

The maximum carbon equivalent of 0.4 is mandatory and is reported on the certificate. Density is about 7.85 – 7.87 g/cm3, modulus of elasticity is approximately 200 – 210 GPa, thermal conductivity is around 51.9 W/m.K and the material is ferromagnetic. Ultrasonic examination to EN 10308 and surface crack detection can be added by agreement. Material is normally released with an EN 10204 Type 3.1 inspection certificate, with Type 3.2 third-party inspection available on request.

Chemical Composition

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for CS S275JR Round Bar

EN 10025-2 specifies composition as maximum limits rather than as ranges, because the standard is written around guaranteed mechanical performance and weldability. Carbon is capped at 0.24% for the bar sizes normally supplied, and the limit rises slightly for very heavy sections. Keeping carbon low is what preserves field weldability at this strength level.

Manganese up to 1.50% is the principal strengthening and hardenability element and combines with sulphur to prevent hot shortness during rolling. Silicon acts as a deoxidiser and adds modest solid-solution strengthening. Phosphorus and sulphur are each limited to 0.04%, which is the normal limit for the JR quality class.

Nitrogen is limited to 0.01% in the JR and J0 quality classes to prevent strain ageing embrittlement. In the J2 class the steel is fully killed and no nitrogen limit is applied, because the aluminium present fixes free nitrogen as aluminium nitride. Copper is restricted to 0.60% because higher levels promote surface cracking during hot rolling.

The maximum carbon equivalent of 0.4, calculated by the IIW formula CEV equals C plus Mn/6 plus (Cr+Mo+V)/5 plus (Ni+Cu)/15, is a mandatory requirement of the standard and is reported on the mill certificate. It is the value the fabricator uses to establish preheat temperature and welding procedure.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of CS S275JR Round Bar

EN 10025-2 makes yield strength, tensile strength, elongation and impact energy mandatory acceptance criteria. For S275JR the minimum yield strength is 275 MPa for diameters up to 16 mm, with the tensile strength required to fall within the band 410-560 MPa. Minimum longitudinal elongation is 23%.

Yield strength is specified against nominal thickness or diameter and reduces in defined steps as section size increases, because thicker product cools more slowly from the rolling temperature and develops a coarser grain structure. The applicable size band must be stated when ordering so that the correct minimum is certified.

The quality suffix defines the toughness requirement, and this is the practical difference between grades that share the same yield strength. JR requires 27 J at plus 20 degC, J0 requires 27 J at 0 degC and J2 requires 27 J at minus 20 degC. Only the impact requirement and the matching phosphorus and sulphur limits differ between them. Testing follows EN ISO 148-1 on standard 10 mm by 10 mm V-notch specimens, with tensile testing to EN ISO 6892-1.

The upper limit on tensile strength is a genuine acceptance criterion, not a guideline. It matters in plastic and seismic design where an over-strong member can transfer failure to a connection intended to remain elastic. The material is supplied as rolled and is not heat treated, so properties reflect the rolling reduction and cooling rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Carbon Steel S275JR Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Carbon Steel S275JR Round Bar is a hot-rolled non-alloy structural steel bar produced to EN 10025-2, carrying Werkstoff number 1.0044. The designation gives a minimum yield strength of 275 MPa for diameters up to 16 mm, a tensile strength of 410-560 MPa and a certified Charpy impact energy of 27 J at +20 degC.
The product standard is EN 10025-2. Dimensional tolerances for hot-rolled round bar come from EN 10060. Tensile testing follows EN ISO 6892-1 and Charpy V-notch impact testing follows EN ISO 148-1. Material is normally released with an EN 10204 Type 3.1 inspection certificate reporting the heat analysis, mechanical results and carbon equivalent.
The S indicates a structural steel. The number 275 is the minimum yield strength in MPa for thicknesses or diameters up to 16 mm. The suffix defines the impact toughness class: JR requires 27 J at plus 20 degC, J0 requires 27 J at 0 degC and J2 requires 27 J at minus 20 degC.
Commonly compared grades include ASTM A529 / A529M Grade 50 (comparable, not identical), BS EN 10025-2 S275JR (1.0044), DIN 17100 St 44-2 (superseded), JIS G3101 SS400 (comparable), GB/T 700 Q275, KS D 3503 SS400 (comparable), ISO 630-2 S275B. These are comparable rather than identical, since yield strength steps, impact test temperatures and chemistry windows differ between standards. Any substitution should be confirmed by the design engineer and the ordered standard stated on the purchase order.
Yes. The maximum carbon equivalent of 0.40 is a mandatory requirement of the standard and is reported on the mill certificate, which allows the fabricator to establish preheat and welding procedure with confidence. Shielded metal arc, gas metal arc, flux cored and submerged arc processes are all suitable using matching low-hydrogen consumables. Preheat requirements rise with section thickness, joint restraint and falling ambient temperature.
No. Carbon is limited to 0.24% maximum, which is too low for useful through-hardening by quenching. The grade is a structural steel whose strength comes from composition and controlled rolling rather than from a hardening heat treatment. Where a hardened component is required, a medium-carbon engineering grade to EN 10083-2 should be selected instead. Surface hardness can be obtained by carburising if required.
Hot-rolled round bar is commonly available from about 8 mm to 250 mm diameter with tolerances to EN 10060. Standard random length is 6 metres, and cut-to-length supply is available subject to minimum order quantity. Surface condition is normally hot rolled or hot rolled and descaled, with peeled and turned bar available where a cleaner surface or closer tolerance is required.
