Product Description for Stainless Steel 410S Round Bar

Stainless Steel 410S Round Bar is a solid round bar made from the low-carbon version of Type 410 chromium stainless steel (UNS S41008). It carries about 11.5–13.5% chromium and not more than 0.08% carbon. The low carbon content keeps the structure mainly ferritic after annealing, so the grade does not harden much when it is cooled quickly from high temperature.

This non-hardening behaviour is the main reason buyers choose 410S over standard 410. It reduces the risk of cracking during welding and during service at high temperature. The bar offers moderate corrosion resistance in mild atmospheres, fresh water, steam and many mild chemicals. It also resists scaling in air up to about 700°C in continuous service.

In Europe the matching material is 1.4000 (X6Cr13) to EN 10088-3. The chemistry of the American grade follows UNS S41008 as listed in ASTM A240 and ASTM A959. Bars are normally supplied annealed and may be hot rolled, forged, peeled, cold drawn or centreless ground. Like all 12% chromium ferritic-type steels, 410S bar is attracted to a magnet in every condition.

Common uses include annealing boxes, quenching racks, furnace parts, petrochemical tray supports, fasteners and machined parts that are welded. It is also used for linings and parts in oil refining and power plants where mild corrosion and heat are present. Compared with austenitic grades it costs less and has lower thermal expansion. However, it has lower general corrosion resistance than 304 and should not be used in chloride-rich or strongly acidic service. For large welded assemblies, 410S also avoids the post-weld hardening that often forces a full heat treatment on standard 410 parts.

Common Applications of Stainless Steel 410S Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Stainless Steel 410S Round Bar is ordered mainly to EN 10088-3 as grade 1.4000 in the annealed (+A) condition. For American orders the chemistry is taken from UNS S41008 as listed in ASTM A240 and harmonised in ASTM A959. Buyers should state the exact standard on the order, because bar-specific ASTM coverage for S41008 varies by edition.

Bars are hot rolled or forged, then annealed. They can be supplied black, descaled, peeled, cold drawn or centreless ground. Diameter, out-of-round and straightness tolerances follow ASTM A484 for American orders, or EN 10060 (hot rolled) and EN 10278 (bright bar, commonly h9 to h11) for European orders.

Annealing is normally done at about 750–850°C followed by air cooling. The grade is not meant to be hardened. Physical values in the table are given for design guidance only. The alloy is magnetic and has lower thermal expansion than austenitic stainless steel, which helps in cyclic heating.

Standard tests include heat analysis, tensile test, hardness test and dimensional check. Ultrasonic testing, PMI and third-party inspection can be added. The mill certificate should show the standard, heat number, condition and test results.

Because many mills stock 410S as plate rather than bar, round bar is often forged or cut from heavier stock. Ask the supplier whether the bar is rolled, forged or plate-cut, as this affects grain direction and test location.

Chemical Composition

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for SS 410S Round Bar

The table shows the limits for UNS S41008 as given in ASTM A240. The European grade 1.4000 is very close, with chromium set at 12.0–14.0% in EN 10088-3 and no nickel limit of the same form.

Chromium is the key element. At 11.5–13.5% it forms a thin passive film that gives the bar its basic resistance to rust and scaling. This is enough for mild atmospheres, steam and fresh water, but not for chloride-rich or strongly acidic service.

Carbon is held to 0.08% maximum. This low level is the main difference from Type 410. With less carbon, little austenite forms at high temperature, so hard martensite does not form on cooling. The result is a soft, ductile bar that is easier to weld and less likely to crack.

Manganese and silicon act as deoxidisers during steelmaking. Silicon also helps oxidation resistance slightly. Phosphorus and sulfur are kept low to protect toughness, hot workability and weld quality. Nickel is a residual element limited to 0.60% so that it does not promote hardening. Always check the heat analysis on the mill certificate against the ordered standard. If the part will run hot for long periods, a bar near the upper end of the chromium range gives slightly better scaling resistance.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of SS 410S Round Bar

The mechanical values are shown for two references and should not be mixed. The ASTM A240 values apply to S41008 in the annealed condition and are widely used as the reference for 410S. The EN 10088-3 values apply to grade 1.4000 bars in the annealed (+A) condition.

Annealed 410S bar combines moderate strength with the ductility needed for bending and welding. It can be bent, formed and machined without special steps. Because the structure is mainly ferritic, strength does not rise much with quenching. This is useful where parts are welded or heated and cooled many times, as the metal does not become hard and brittle.

Tensile and hardness results are taken on samples from the delivered bar. Values can vary slightly with bar size and finishing route. Cold drawing can raise strength and lower elongation. For design, use the minimum values of the ordered standard and confirm actual results from the mill certificate. Impact values are not mandatory in the base standards but can be ordered as a supplementary test. If the part will be welded, the heat-affected zone of 410S stays close to the parent-metal hardness, so no post-weld tempering is normally needed to restore ductility. This is the main mechanical advantage over 410.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Stainless Steel 410S Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Choose 410S when the part will be welded or cooled quickly and must stay ductile. Its carbon is held at 0.08% maximum, so it does not form hard, brittle martensite in the weld zone the way 410 does. Choose standard 410 instead when the bar must be hardened for wear resistance or higher strength after machining.
Not in a useful way. With carbon held to 0.08% maximum, very little austenite forms at high temperature, so quenching produces only a small rise in hardness. If your drawing calls for a hardened 410-type part, for example a valve seat or pump shaft with a wear surface, order standard 410 or 420 instead. Choose 410S when softness after welding or heating matters more than hardness.
410S resists scaling in air up to about 700°C in continuous service and a little higher in intermittent service. Above this, the oxide layer grows quickly and flakes. For furnace parts that run hotter, move to a higher-chromium grade such as 430, 446 or 309/310. Also note that strength at temperature is modest, so heavily loaded hot parts need a design check.
ASTM lists UNS S41008 mainly in flat-product standards such as ASTM A240, and bar coverage varies by edition. In Europe the same steel, 1.4000 (X6Cr13), is fully covered for bars by EN 10088-3. Many mills therefore certify bar to EN 10088-3 and show the ASTM chemistry for reference. Agree the certificate standard in writing before ordering.
Weld 410S with a matching 410NiMo or a 309L/309 austenitic filler, depending on whether colour match or crack resistance matters more. A preheat of about 150–200°C is useful on thick sections, and a short post-weld anneal restores full ductility. The bar machines well in the annealed condition, and it cannot be hardened in a useful way by heat treatment.
With only 12–13.5% chromium, 410S rusts in marine air, chloride water and most acids, so it is not a replacement for 304 or 316 in wet service. It also has lower strength than hardenable 410 and should not be chosen for wear parts. Its best use is dry, hot or mildly corrosive service up to about 650°C.
