Product Description for Stainless Steel 416 Round Bar

Stainless Steel 416 Round Bar is a solid cylindrical bar produced from free-machining martensitic stainless steel Type 416 (UNS S41600). The grade is a free-cutting version of Type 410 with a minimum sulphur addition of 0.15%. Bars are supplied principally to ASTM A582 / A582M, with dimensional and surface requirements from ASTM A484 / A484M.

The grade contains 12.00-14.00% chromium with a maximum of 0.15% carbon. Because it is martensitic, it can be hardened by quenching and tempering, unlike the austenitic free-machining grade 303. In the annealed condition it machines at roughly 85% of the rate of free-cutting carbon steel, the highest machinability of any stainless steel, which makes it the standard choice for parts produced in large volumes on automatic and CNC lathes.

Bars are supplied annealed, or hardened and tempered to a specified strength or hardness range, in hot-finished, cold-drawn, turned or ground finishes. Typical stock diameters run from about 5 mm to 200 mm in 3 to 6 m lengths. Corrosion resistance is modest, limited to mild atmospheric, fresh water, steam and light chemical exposure, and the sulphide inclusions make the grade unsuitable for chloride service or for welding.

Common applications include valve stems and trim, pump shafts, motor and gear shafts, studs, nuts and bolts, gear blanks, automatic screw machine parts, washing machine components, electrical hardware and firearms parts. Industries served include general engineering, pumps and valves, automotive, appliance manufacturing, electrical equipment and oilfield surface hardware. The grade is ferromagnetic in all conditions, which suits it to solenoid and magnetic-circuit components.

Common Applications of Stainless Steel 416 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Get the key technical specifications for Stainless Steel 416 Round Bar

Stainless Steel 416 Round Bar is ordered principally to ASTM A582 / A582M, which covers free-machining stainless bars and controls the material through composition and hardness limits. For the annealed cold-finished condition the maximum hardness is 262 HBW. ASTM A582 does not mandate a full set of tensile minima for every condition, so tensile and yield values are generally reported as typical unless the purchaser specifically requires tensile testing.

Because the grade is martensitic it responds to heat treatment. Annealing at about 815-900 deg C with slow cooling gives the softest, most machinable condition. Hardening is performed from 925-1010 deg C with an oil or air quench, followed by tempering. Tempering between roughly 400 and 580 deg C should be avoided because it produces temper embrittlement and a marked loss of impact toughness.

Dimensional tolerance, straightness and surface condition follow ASTM A484 / A484M. Cold-drawn and ground bars hold tighter diameter tolerances and give better surface roughness than hot-finished bars.

Inspection normally includes chemical analysis to ASTM E415, hardness testing to ASTM E10 or E18, and tensile testing to ASTM A370 where required. Ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle inspection and positive material identification may be specified. Bars are supplied with an EN 10204 Type 3.1 certificate as standard.

Chemical Composition

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for SS 416 Round Bar

Chromium at 12.00-14.00% is the minimum level needed to form a passive oxide film and give the alloy stainless behaviour. At this level the corrosion resistance is modest, adequate for mild atmospheric exposure, fresh water, steam and light chemical service, but well below that of the austenitic 300 series.

Carbon at up to 0.15% is what makes the grade hardenable. On quenching from the austenitising range the carbon is trapped in solution and forms hard martensite, so heat treatment can raise strength and hardness well above the annealed level. The same carbon combines with chromium as carbides, locally depleting chromium and further limiting corrosion resistance.

Sulphur at 0.15% minimum defines the free-machining character. It forms manganese sulphide inclusions that fracture the chip and reduce cutting forces, giving the best machinability of any stainless steel. Those same inclusions act as pit initiation sites and as crack starters. That rules the grade out for welding and for chloride environments. Phosphorus is allowed up to 0.060%, higher than in Type 410, for the same machinability reason.

Manganese up to 1.25% ties the sulphur into manganese sulphide rather than iron sulphide, avoiding hot shortness. Silicon acts as a deoxidiser. An optional molybdenum addition up to 0.60% slightly improves corrosion resistance.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of SS 416 Round Bar

ASTM A582 / A582M controls Stainless Steel 416 Round Bar primarily by hardness, with 262 HBW maximum for annealed cold-finished bar and a specified hardness range for the hardened and tempered Condition T. Tensile and yield values are therefore given as typical rather than mandatory unless tensile testing is requested at the time of order, in which case testing follows ASTM A370 and ASTM E8 / E8M.

The properties depend strongly on the delivery condition. In the annealed state the bar is soft, ductile and easily machined. After hardening from 925-1010 deg C and tempering, tensile strength and hardness rise well above the annealed values while elongation falls. Low-temperature tempering near 200-370 deg C gives the highest strength and hardness, while tempering at 590-705 deg C gives lower strength with better ductility and improved corrosion resistance.

Tempering in the 400-580 deg C band must be avoided. It produces temper embrittlement and a sharp reduction in impact energy, and it also reduces corrosion resistance.

Impact toughness and transverse ductility are lower than Type 410 because of the sulphide stringers, and fatigue strength is likewise reduced. For rotating shafts and stems, the machined surface finish and the presence of stress raisers have a significant influence and should be controlled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Stainless Steel 416 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
It is a solid cylindrical bar made from free-machining martensitic stainless steel Type 416 (UNS S41600 / 1.4005). It contains 12-14% chromium with a minimum 0.15% sulphur addition, making it the most machinable stainless steel available. Unlike austenitic free-machining grade 303, Type 416 is hardenable by quenching and tempering, so it can be supplied either annealed or heat treated to a specified strength.
The principal product standard is ASTM A582 / A582M for free-machining stainless steel bars, which specifies chemical composition and hardness limits for the annealed and the hardened and tempered conditions. Dimensional tolerances and surface requirements come from ASTM A484 / A484M. In Europe the grade is listed in EN 10088-3 as 1.4005 (X12CrS13).
Recognised equivalents include EN 1.4005 (X12CrS13) in Europe, SUS416 to JIS G4303 in Japan, Y12Cr13 (S41617) to GB/T 1220 in China, STS416 to KS D 3706 in South Korea and 416S21 under the superseded BS 970 in the United Kingdom. The UNS designation is S41600.
Yes. Because the structure is martensitic, the bar can be austenitised at approximately 925-1010 deg C, quenched in oil or air, and then tempered to the required strength. Tempering between 200 and 370 deg C gives maximum hardness, while 590-705 deg C gives lower strength with better ductility. Tempering between roughly 400 and 580 deg C must be avoided because it causes temper embrittlement.
Welding is not recommended. The high sulphur content promotes hot cracking, and the martensitic structure hardens in the heat-affected zone, creating a risk of cold cracking. Where welding is unavoidable, preheat to about 200-300 deg C, use a low-hydrogen austenitic filler such as 309 or 312, and post-weld temper. For welded assemblies, Type 410 or an austenitic grade is a better selection.
Corrosion resistance is moderate and is best in the hardened and tempered condition with a smooth, clean surface. The grade handles mild atmospheric exposure, fresh water, steam, and some light chemical and petroleum environments. The sulphide inclusions and the relatively low chromium content make it unsuitable for chloride-bearing, marine or acidic conditions, where a 300 series or duplex grade should be used.
Round bar is generally stocked from about 5 mm to 200 mm diameter in 3 to 6 m random or fixed lengths, with larger forged sizes available to order. Cut-to-length service is offered. Diameter, length and straightness tolerances follow ASTM A484 / A484M, with tighter classes for cold-drawn, turned and ground finishes.
Yes. Type 416 has a martensitic structure and is ferromagnetic in both the annealed and the hardened and tempered conditions. This makes it a common choice for solenoid cores, armatures and other components that must form part of a magnetic circuit, and it also allows magnetic particle inspection to be used for surface crack detection.
