Product Description for Titanium Grade 10 Round Bar

Titanium Grade 10 Round Bar refers to Ti-11.5Mo-6Zr-4.5Sn, the metastable beta alloy known as Beta III, with UNS number R58030. It was listed as Grade 10 in older ASTM titanium standards, but current ASTM B348 no longer includes it, so bar is ordered to AMS specifications.

After solution treatment, the alloy keeps a fully beta structure at room temperature. In this state it is soft and can be cold headed, rolled and bent. Ageing then precipitates fine alpha phase, which raises strength sharply.

The alloy is non-magnetic and has good corrosion resistance. Availability is limited, so buyers should confirm supply before designing around it. Beta III is a metastable beta alloy, which means it can be cold formed like a soft metal after solution treatment and then aged to very high strength. It has a lower elastic modulus than alpha-beta alloys, which gives it high spring-back, useful for springs and clips. A well-known use is in orthodontic archwires, where beta titanium wire of this composition gives a gentle, steady force. In aerospace, it has been used for rivets, fasteners and springs that must be formed cold and then strengthened. Its higher density, about 5.0 g/cm³, is a trade-off against its formability. Engineers usually choose it when a part must be shaped cold and then made very strong, for example a spring clip or a formed rivet. For most other high-strength parts, Grade 5 is more available and better documented. Wire and small bar sizes are the most common forms. Check stock early.

Common Applications of Titanium Grade 10 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Get the key technical specifications for Titanium Grade 10 Round Bar

Titanium Grade 10 Round Bar is ordered to AMS specifications for Ti-11.5Mo-6Zr-4.5Sn. Current ASTM B348 does not list it.

Bars are delivered solution treated. Physical data are reference values: density about 5.0 g/cm³ and a modulus lower than alpha-beta alloys.

Because Grade 10 was removed from ASTM B348, bar and wire are ordered to AMS specifications for Ti-11.5Mo-6Zr-4.5Sn, such as AMS 4977 and AMS 4980, which cover different product forms and conditions. The order should state the specification, the delivery condition (usually solution treated) and whether test pieces must be aged to prove the required strength. Ageing is usually done at about 480–540°C for several hours, and the exact cycle depends on the strength required and the section size. Because supply is limited, confirm availability, minimum quantities and lead times with the mill before committing to a design.

Ageing is done after forming or machining, usually at about 480–540°C. The ordered AMS document sets which condition is delivered and which test pieces must be aged to prove the required strength. Tolerances follow the AMS document or agreed limits. Lead times can be long.

Chemical Composition

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Ti Grade 10 Round Bar

The table shows commonly published limits for Beta III. The ordered AMS specification governs the exact values. Molybdenum at 10–13% is the main beta stabiliser. It keeps the high-temperature beta phase stable at room temperature after solution treatment, which gives the soft, formable condition. Zirconium at 4.5–7.5% and tin at 3.75–5.25% are neutral elements that strengthen the alloy and control how quickly alpha phase forms during ageing. Controlling this ageing response is what allows high strength without brittleness. Oxygen is limited to about 0.18% and hydrogen to about 0.020%. The high molybdenum content is also why the alloy is denser than most titanium grades and has good resistance to reducing acids.

Iron is held to 0.35% maximum, carbon to 0.10% and nitrogen to 0.05%. Because the alloy contains no aluminium, it avoids the brittle Ti3Al phase that limits some alpha alloys.

The certificate should report every limit in the ordered AMS document, including hydrogen, which is tested by laboratory methods. Molybdenum also improves resistance to reducing acids, which is why beta alloys of this type resist dilute hydrochloric acid better than Grade 2. Tin and zirconium have little effect on corrosion.

The table gives reference values for solution-treated and aged Beta III, for guidance only. The table values are reference figures, not specification minimums. In the solution-treated condition, Beta III has tensile strength of about 690–830 MPa with good elongation and a low elastic modulus, which suits cold heading, rolling and bending. After ageing, tensile strength of about 1240–1380 MPa can be reached, with reduced ductility. The exact values depend on section size and ageing cycle. For springs, relaxation and fatigue data should be taken from the producer. Buyers should use the minimums in the ordered AMS specification for design and acceptance, and test aged samples from each lot.

For springs, the low modulus in the solution-treated state gives a large elastic range, and relaxation data at the service temperature should be taken from the producer.

Ageing response also depends on prior cold work, so formed parts may age faster than straight bar. Test aged samples from every lot, taken from the same bar and aged with the parts. Over-ageing lowers strength, while under-ageing leaves the part too soft, so the cycle must be controlled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Titanium Grade 10 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Grade 10 refers to Beta III (Ti-11.5Mo-6Zr-4.5Sn), a beta alloy that is very formable in the solution-treated condition and reaches high strength after ageing. Choose it for springs, cold-formed fasteners and clips. Grade 5 is more available, better documented and suits general high-strength machined parts, so it is usually the default.
Beta titanium wire of the Ti-11.5Mo-6Zr-4.5Sn composition has a low elastic modulus and high strength, so it can be bent into shape and then deliver a steady, gentle force over a wide range of movement. It is also nickel-free, which suits patients with nickel sensitivity. This combination has made it a common archwire material, often sold as TMA wire.
Yes. In the solution-treated condition, Beta III is soft and ductile enough for cold heading, rolling and bending, much more than alpha or alpha-beta titanium alloys. Parts are formed first, then aged at about 480–540°C to reach high strength. This route is used for rivets, fasteners and springs that would be hard to make from pre-hardened material.
Availability is limited because demand is low and the grade is no longer listed in ASTM B348. Some mills and specialist distributors still supply bar and wire to AMS specifications, often with minimum order quantities and longer lead times. For new designs, consider whether a more widely available beta alloy or Grade 5 can meet the need.
Beta III is supplied solution treated for forming, then aged at about 480–540°C to reach high strength. Welding is possible but needs strict argon shielding and qualified procedures, and welds should be aged with the part. Machine it in the solution-treated state with sharp carbide tools and low speeds, as aged material is much harder.
Grade 10 is not listed in current ASTM B348, so it is supplied to AMS specifications and availability is limited. It is denser than most titanium alloys, which reduces its weight advantage. Over-ageing or wrong cycles can make it brittle. Buyers should confirm the alloy, specification and supply before ordering. Check stock early.
